Camping record, new campervan hire and protected coral reefs

Campsites are breaking records and a new motorhome rental company is setting up shop in Sweden. This week's travel news is about camping, motorhomes and sustainability. There will also be some sports holiday trips and some cruises.

New record for Sweden's campsites

Overnight stays at Sweden's campsites continue to increase and in 2019 growth increased further. This is according to the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth's preliminary accommodation statistics for 2019. According to the preliminary statistics, overnight stays increased by 7.7 per cent to over 17 million guest nights. This is an increase of more than 1 million guest nights and means a new record year for the industry. Foreign tourists account for around 25 per cent of the volume, and the international market has increased by around 9 per cent.

Indie Campers motorhome hire service comes to Sweden

Swedes can now become the first Nordic country to rent a campervan for the summer in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö from the company Indie Campers, according to a press release. Indie Campers is a platform where you can book a campervan online for pick-up and drop-off from 49 destinations. What started with two good friends and 3 motorhomes in Portugal in 2013, has now developed into a company with 2000 motorhomes, trailers and other road trip vehicles. Sun and big cities top the list of holidays abroad.

Gran Canaria is the undisputed number one destination for sports holidays in 2020. However, the destinations that are increasing the most on the top list are Istanbul, Krabi, Miami and Lisbon. This is according to new statistics from Ticket. This is where Swedes are travelling during sports holiday week 9:

Viking Line's premiere cruise to Bornholm already sold out

This summer, Viking Cinderella cruises for the first time to Bornholm via Gotland, a news that has proven to be a real success. The special cruise to Bornholm with departure on 21 June has already been completely sold out in February. At the same time, Viking Line is investing in continuing to expand the range of themed and special cruises in 2020. There are a few seats left on the total of seven Visby cruises, and there are also cruises with themes such as wine, champagne, whiskey, music, genealogy and literature.

TUI Care Foundation to protect coral reefs

The TUI Care Foundation and the Reef-World Foundation are jointly launching a three-year initiative to protect coral reefs in the Dominican Republic. The project primarily aims to reduce any direct, harmful impact on coral reefs by raising awareness and promoting environmentally friendly diving and snorkelling practices. The TUI Junior Academy Foundation will train young ambassadors, who in turn train the local population. Information on coral reefs will also be sent to 65,000 tourists.

6 out of 10 Swedes do something for more sustainable travelling

Almost 6 out of 10 Swedes (56 per cent) do something to make their trip abroad environmentally sustainable, according to a Sifo survey from Ticket. Significantly more men (26 per cent) than women (8 per cent) say they do nothing at all. Swedes do this the most:

  1. Supporting the local population/local traders (48 %)
  2. Choosing direct flights without stopovers (45 %)
  3. Energy saving in the hotel (40 %)
  4. Refrain from all activities with animals (38 %)
  5. Choose other modes of travel than air, such as train or boat (27 %)
  6. Choose alternative destinations that do not suffer from over-tourism (17 %)
  7. Offset part or all of the journey to the destination (17 %)
  8. Minimises packing, to reduce fuel consumption (15 %)
  9. Choosing sustainability certified hotels (7 %)
