Travel destinations in southern Sweden
We start with tips for travelling in southern Sweden, but what do we mean by 'southern Sweden'? It's a somewhat fuzzy definition, which in an approximately corresponds to Götaland (i.e. Skåne, Halland, Blekinge, Småland, Öland, Gotland, Västergötland, Östergötland and Dalsland).
Ten tips for travelling in southern Sweden
Here are ten tips for travelling in southern Sweden, based on our own experience.
1. Gothenburg
Gothenburg is known for being a little more relaxed than Stockholm, but it also offers a wide range of restaurants, museums and cultural experiences. Here you can visit Liseberg or Universeum, enjoy seafood or perhaps take a boat trip in the Gothenburg archipelago.
2nd Tylösand
Tylösand, located in Halmstad municipality, offers long sandy beaches and beautiful views. In the summer, the area is full of holidaymakers, and the restaurants and bars are lively. In Tylösand you will also find Per Gessle's Hotel Tylösand and plenty of golf courses and campsites.
3. Åhus
Åhus is a lovely destination in southern Sweden with charming houses and a beautiful coastal location. Here you should not miss to visit "Absolute Home - The Åhus Villa". If you come here in summer, you should also take the opportunity to eat ice cream - either from the cosy ice cream boat or the town's own "Ottoglass".
4. Öland
Sweden's second largest island is a popular summer holiday destination. Here you will find fine sandy beaches and campsites, such as Böda Sand and Sonja's campsite. Here you can also visit Borgholm, Borgholm Castle ruins, Solliden Castle and the restaurant. The lamb and the pig.
5. Västervik Resort
Västervik Resort (formerly Lysingsbadets camping) is a 5-star campsite in Västervik, on the east coast of Sweden. The campsite, which is open all year round, offers a wide range of entertainment and activities. It is also surrounded by beautiful nature.
6. Österlen
Österlen is an area in south-eastern Skåne that is popular with holidaymakers. Here you will find Tomelilla, Simrishamn, Ales stenar, Kivik, Stenshuvud National Park and the Ålakusten. The area is also famous for its apples and you can take the opportunity to visit various muster centres.
7. Kristianstad
We visited Kristianstad last spring and were pleasantly surprised by this great destination in southern Sweden. Here you can learn about animals and nature at Naturum, visit different castles, go out in the beautiful nature and enjoy really good and well-prepared food at the local restaurants.
8. Smögen
Smögen is located on the west coast, about an hour and a half north of Gothenburg by car. It offers a charming waterfront setting, with boating and plenty of delicious seafood. From here, you can take a boat trip to the island of Hållö, or to King's Harbour which is right next door.
9. Gotland
We haven't seen much of Gotland, but the little we have seen makes us want to see more. Gotland has beautiful natural areas and those who want to can cycle or camp. It is also possible to experience Visby, the Lummelunda Caves or the holiday resort Kneippbyn.
10. Varberg
Varberg has a long history as a spa town and still offers a spa feeling, not least with the classic cold bath house. In Varberg you can enjoy a spa, but also sea bathing and beech forests. You can also visit Varberg Fortress, Naturum Getterön and the World Heritage Site in Grimeton.
More destinations in southern Sweden
There are of course many more beautiful and interesting destinations in southern Sweden. My (Helena's) old home town Lund is fine and Ystad is charming with its half-timbered houses. Of course, there is also a lot to see and experience in places such as Malmö, Karlskrona and squid. In addition, it attracts West coast with countless nature experiences, islands and boat trips.

It was ambitious to list the gems of southern Sweden. We are so fond of the west coast, but contribute some tips from Skaraborg.
Kinnekulle in spring with orchids, medieval churches, art tours, etc.
Göta Kanal; nice parking spaces and lovely cycle paths along the canal.
Valle härad and Varnhem in the spring when Billingen is white with cherry blossom, with the abbey church and Kata farm.
The wooden town of Hjo on Lake Vättern on a fine summer day.
Tiveden National Park with great hiking trails.
Karlsborg; nice summer town with an interesting fortress.
(it will be fun to read all the tips. Sweden has so much to offer).

Agree with everyone and what BMLars highlights are so beautiful and interesting places. Visingsö and Gränna and taking the boat from Landskrona to Ven and cycling around the island is an experience. Then there is much in the north of our country of beautiful nature and history. And Gotland is fantastic. So many Swedes who have hardly been anywhere in our country but on the Canary Islands 🙂 but you do as you like and one does not have to exclude the other. Something exciting was that recently many thousands of years of history were discovered on grandmother and grandfather's former lands, completely unique to Uppland and makes the researchers amazed. So close, but we had no idea of the culture, ironworks and forge production underground.

The owners' tip for this is Karlshamn. Take the bike out to Sternö, walk around on Boön or why not take the boat out in Blekinge's beautiful archipelago.

We live in Skaraborg, have mostly travelled to the west coast when we were younger but have loved travelling to Skåne for the last 15 years! When we lived out full time we lived in Falsterbo. Skanör-Falsterbo is probably a big favourite in terms of the locals, the beaches that are like any Mediterranean country and all the beautiful houses. More about the area and excursions around that year can be found at magnoliamagis.se... Torekov was also nice with the whole Bjäre Peninsula! The road between Båstad and Torekov on the downside is cruelly beautiful. Kullahalvön is also worth seeing! Malmö, Limhamn nice. Ystad picturesque, Kåseberga a must every year. Simrishamn.
However, Landskrona was not a favourite except for nice SLRK friends who live outside. Borstahusen's campsite has a nice beach and walking paths. Borstahusen itself is also nice. There are pearls all over south-west Skåne!
On the west coast we can recommend Hälsö among others. We are tired of the larger tourist resorts.
Some have written about Skaraborg before and there are a lot of old remains and rich nature. For example, we hear and see cranes flying over the house daily on their way to Lake Hornborga. Soon the big meeting is there!
We feel most comfortable at home and go on excursions in our neighbourhood. Yes, and the local environment means from us and 45 kilometres in all directions....;D

Hmm, it is probably bad with several tips from my side. I liked Öland very much. Gotland I would like to return to because we saw it very briefly and then with a toddler focus.
Yes, a trip on the Göta Canal was a really wonderful experience! http://gottforsjalen.se/2014/07/en-harlig-dag-pa-gota-kanal/

Not a single tip about Dalsland - it's the whole of Sweden in miniature. Håverud, the forests, the lakes, the plains, the Dalsland canal, ancient monuments galore...
