Tyresö Castle is beautifully situated by Kalvfjärden in Tyresö, just south of Stockholm. We went here one day last week when we both strolled in the English park and had a picnic on Notholmen. In addition, there was a nice hike on a small part of the Pilgrim Trail, in Alby nature reserve.

Tyresö Castle in Tyresö
Tyresö Castle is a magnificent and beautiful castle with a fantastic location by the water. Since the 1930s, the castle has been owned and managed by Nordic Museum and normally (when the corona is not raging) you can also see the inside of the castle. Now you have to make do with the scenic outdoor environments.
History of Tyresö Castle
In the 1630s, Gabriel Oxenstierna inherited medieval Tyresö and built a castle and a church. In the 1770s, the owner at the time, Carl Fredrik Scheffer, had an English park laid out according to the European fashion of the time.
In 1892, the Tyresö estate was bought by Marquis Claes Lagergren, a papal chamberlain and well-known figure in Stockholm at the time. He was able to buy the estate thanks to his wife Caroline Lagergren, who came from America and had an American fortune. With her money, they also started a major remodelling of the entire estate.
The interior of the castle has changed a lot over the years, and not much remains from the 17th century. More remains from the 18th century onwards. Unfortunately, all tours are currently cancelled due to the new coronavirus, but it is usually possible to visit the main floor on your own or with a guide (both for a fee). However, the restaurant and café were open when we were here.
Tyresö church
Right next to Tyresö Castle is the lovely little Tyresö Church. The church was inaugurated in 1641 and the first service held here was the funeral of the builder Gabriel Oxenstierna.
Princevillan
Prince Eugen lived for eighteen summers in the Prince's Villa, which until recently was a hostel called Lilla Tyresö. Here he let nature inspire him to create various paintings, such as 'The Cloud'. Many artists came to visit him here during the summers, which makes it possible to talk about an artists' colony during the years 1894-1912.
English Park at Tyresö Castle
Around Tyresö castle is the beautiful English park. Here we also found a charming old house which, according to a passing elderly lady, is the old forest ranger's cottage. When we crossed the charming little wooden bridge, we came to an area with wild nature and a completely different "castle", namely a huge "beaver palace".
Notholmen Island
Right next to Tyresö Castle is the lovely little island of Notholmen. We walked out here and it was really idyllic, with a boat dock, a lively little café and windswept rocks. On one of the rocks we sat down and ate our packed lunch with sandwiches and coffee in a thermos. We really couldn't have it any better!
Walking along the Pilgrimage Trail
We had plenty of time and thought we would also have time for a short hike in nature. Right next to Tyresö Castle is the Alby nature reserve. There is a pilgrimage trail here, but it was not easy to understand the different markings (red, blue, white and yellow). We simply walked up to the north-eastern corner of Albysjön (Fatburen) and walked around this small part of the lake.
The walk was along the waterfront for most of the time and was fantastic nice. We found super nice viewpoints by the water where we had coffee and fruit before continuing. A really nice day simply!

Nice that you have visited our neighbourhood, you were not so far from us then, cycling distance.
It is certainly a beautiful area and the castle is still standing. That's because Countess Gyllenstierna, who was living in the castle at the time of the Russian advance in 1719, tore down one of the towers and set it on fire, so the Russians thought it was already abandoned and turned back.
On Midsummer's Eve there is always a nice celebration in the park.
Over in Prinsvillan there are usually tournaments at the end of May and a nice Christmas market. How it will be this year is not yet known.
Unfortunately, the Prinsvillan hostel has gone bankrupt, we read in the newspaper recently, sadly.
Tyresö church, we got married in hihihihi
Notholmen, it's a lovely place and great swimming opportunities.
Wishing you a nice Sunday, Hugs
