Soon it is time for us to go on our summer motorhome trip! We had originally planned to travel in Europe, but we have to postpone those plans. Now it will be a trip along the Göta Canal and Trollhätte Canal instead, and it will be really exciting.

Cancelled motorhome trip in Europe
Peter had come a long way with the plans for this summer's motorhome trip in Europe, when we had to cancel. We were so tagged on all the amazing destinations he had ticked off in Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and other countries, and at first it was of course disappointing to cancel. Now we have reloaded and are ready for Sweden!
Motorhome journey along the Göta Canal and Trollhätte Canal
We have decided to do a motorhome trip along the Göta Canal and Trollhätte Canal, as best we can by car. The reason is that we believe there is a lot to see and discover along this route. We will not only focus on the canal itself, but hope to discover cities, castles, sights and nature.
The map shows an approximate route. Since we drive a motorhome and since nothing is booked, the route can change along the way. For example, if we have time to spare, we may drive further down towards Varberg and Halmstador northwards along the west coast.
What will we see along the way?
We will roll relatively slowly and find different things to see and do along the way. Some places we are keen to see and experience:
- Stegeborg castle ruins
- Söderköping
- Berg's locks
- Motala and Lake Varamon
- Vadstena and Vadstena Castle
- Askersund
- Tiveden National Park
- Karlsborg Fortress
- Visingsö
- Alvastra monastery ruins
This is of course only a very loose plan, and we will look for places to visit along the way. Is there anything special along the way that you would like to suggest, and that you think we shouldn't miss? Please tell us!
Do you want to follow the journey?
Would you like to follow our summer motorhome trip? We will, as usual, update the blog every morning at 06:00. We will tell you about everything we see and experience along the way. You can also follow us on:

Meet or cooperate?
We've already had a few requests to meet along the way. Great fun! Of course, we hope to meet others who are travelling - or who may live along the route. But we can't promise that we'll be able to meet everyone we want to. Not only are we on holiday, but we also have to take care of our blog, business and "up and coming". web shop. But having said that, feel free to shout!
Do you have a business along the way that you think deserves to be showcased to tourists here on the blog? Feel free to send us an email with suggestions!
So when do we roll? It's not quite decided yet, but probably this weekend.
Mr Lars-Åke Svensson says:
The Göta Canal is a favourite with us and we have 'done the canal by bike, motorbike, caravan and motorhome and some tips are:
Forsvik Industrial Museum https://www.forsviksbruk.se/
Park at the Glasbruk hostel where we camped on our cycling holiday and enjoyed their breakfast buffet. https://glasbruket.com/boende/
Schnitzel and beer at Wassbacken https://wassbacken.com
Unload the bikes and pedal along one of the most beautiful routes, such as Tåtorp-Sjötorp or Berg-Borensberg.

Don't forget Mem where everything started with the Göta Canal, there is also a nice restaurant. The above suggestions are not entirely wrong either.
Travelled a lot along the Göta Canal during my short time with a motorhome and cycled almost the entire Göta Canal as there are good cycle paths along "almost" the entire canal.
The Berg locks are a sight to behold.
Get in touch when you come to Askersund and we'll have a coffee.

Helena says:
Great! Then we will try to get in touch! 🙂

Exciting trip! Just hope the weather gets better now. There is a lot to see down there. My sister lives in Kättillstorpstraken, between Vänern and Vättern and I am constantly fascinated by how they can conjure up new sights every time we visit. However, we have mostly done child-friendly things.
Seeing a lockage of a really big boat in Trollhättan, for example, is really cool.
09 July 2020 - 8:16
Helena says:
Yes, it will be interesting! And good to hear that there is a lot to discover, that's our feeling too!

Don't miss the old neighbourhood of Mariestad and Mariestad Cathedral. Polka dots in Gränna and Brahehus are a must when travelling east of Lake Vättern. In Jönköping there is the Matchstick Museum which can be interesting to visit. Halle & Hunneberg outside Vänersborg is also very nice.

Thanks, sounds like great tips! I have to make a list and write down everything I think 🙂 ðŸ™'

Nice trip! I have not done the tour by car but by boat a couple of times. Maybe you have time for a day trip by boat on the canal because it is great fun with all the locks and other things you see from the boat as well. ( (There are different options)
I have also lived by the canal, in "godforsaken" Töreboda when I was a child. And it is fun to also cycle along the canal banks.
09 July 2020 - 10:18
Helena says:
Thanks for the tips! We'll see what we can do! Töreboda we may come by 🙂

You start at Men at Slätbaken. Located nicely with a small car park. From there you can cycle into Söderköping. Do not be tempted by Smultronstället, the ice cream parlour by the canal, they serve factory-made ice cream. Walk two blocks to Rådhustorget and enjoy delicious homemade ice cream instead.
A few weeks ago we visited and stayed overnight at Forsvik. There is an old ironworks. They built a replica of the wheeled steamer Erik Nordevall Ii. You can see the boat at the Göta canal and the lock Norrkvarn. You can see on our blog.

Helena says:
Thanks for all the tips! Have noted on a small list now ?. And interesting with these different ice cream tips in Söderköping?

Annika in Spain says:
I look forward to following your journey!
I have to send you some tips too, since you're travelling past my home region (Lidköping)!
Kinnekulle, this special place, I think there is a campsite up on the mountain with a nice view. Several old mansions, nice little roads, cafés (I always go to Hellekis Säteri's garden café, where there is soup and a lot of pastries. https://www.hellekiscafe.se/
Lidköping is a nice town in itself, if you are passing by and need to stock up on bread, buns and cookies, the best ones (Lidköping has many bakeries) are at Henry's bakery. The best day for a visit is a Saturday, when there is a market on the square. Now I get homesick... there will be no visit to Sweden this year....
Outside Lidköping we have a couple of must-see places that I always go to when I'm "at home". Läckö Castle, and then Spikens fiskeläge a few kilometres away. Wonderful to go there and buy smoked fish and watch the fishing boats.
Someone mentioned Varnhem and Varnhem Abbey Church. Absolutely worth a visit, even though it is not really along your route, but I think that you who drive a motorhome like beautiful roads, and then it is of course Valle you should visit, in the same area as the monastery church... There are small crooked roads that run in a far too beautiful landscape with small hills and valleys and a lot of small lakes. It is the area around Öglunda, Eggby, Skärv, Flämslätt... It is located in Skara municipality.
Have a nice trip!

Many thanks Annika for all the tips! Have made a note on my list now! ??

Since you are going to Berg, I recommend the nearby Vreta Kloster. And Old Linköping, also Sweden's second largest church after Uppdala - the Cathedral plus the Air Force Museum! Vallebygden with Varnhemhar I have recommended separately! "The world's most beautiful road" runs between Timmerdala near Mariestad and Varnhem!
10 July 2020 - 11:36
Helena says:
Thanks for even more tips Monika! I have now collected everything on a list! ?

Looking forward to joining the trip! Unfortunately have no tips because we have never been there!

Anna says:
Sweden's smallest (?) car park. Mallboden in Motala. It is located in the middle of the old industrial landscape Motala verkstad which was part of the canal construction. that you can eat well at Mallboden is a bonus.
The Motormuseum in Motala by the harbour is one of the best in Sweden.
On the way back - turn off in Huskvarna and take a break in nice Bunn. Nice campsite in lovely surroundings in the peasant landscape!
Have a good trip!
