There are plenty of great places to visit in France, whether you like dramatic scenery, bustling cities or exotic islands. France is one of our absolute favourite countries in Europe, and it's a place we keep coming back to. Here are some places in France that we can definitely recommend.

Great places in France - according to us
In this post, we're highlighting a number of places in France that we really like. We have chosen to limit ourselves to three places under each category, but it was certainly not easy to prioritise. There are so many nice places in France.
3 x nature in France
France offers beautiful, dramatic and varied scenery. From fabulous beaches to caves and fascinating rock formations.
Camaret-sur-mer
Brittany, in north-west France, is stunningly beautiful with a dramatic coastline facing the wild sea. We found it most beautiful in Camaret-sur-Mer. What a view!
Gorges du Verdon
The Gorges du Verdon is a long canyon that drops 700 metres in places to the green-blue River Verdon, where you can travel by canoe or pedal boat. Around it are several charming medieval villages such as Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane.
Ardèche
The Ardèche has another dramatic canyon with a long and winding green-blue river, where kayaking is popular. There are also plenty of caves in the area, such as Chauvet, where 36,000-year-old cave paintings have been found.
3 x islands in France
France is home to many beautiful islands. We've visited a bunch and it was hard to pick favourites, but here are three islands that we think shouldn't be missed.
Porquerolles
Island Porquerolles located off Hyeres in the south of France, is one of the three so-called 'golden islands'. It includes Notre Dame beach, which has sometimes been called the most beautiful beach in France. It's not hard to see why!
Port-Cros
The island of Port-Cros is another of the three 'golden islands'. Covered in lush greenery and lined with beautiful beaches, this island is reminiscent of the Caribbean. Here you can live a relaxed island life and drink mojitos at one of the bars in the harbour.
Corsica
Finally, we cannot fail to mention the large island of Corsica, one of our favourite places in Europe. Corsica is a stunningly beautiful island with dramatic mountains, untamed nature and white paradise beaches where you can swim in turquoise waters. There are also several nice towns, such as Calvi and Bonifacio.
3 x Cities in France
There are many fantastic and exciting cities in France, both large and small. Here is a presonal selection of three cities that we like.
Arles
Arles is a charming little town, full of history from Roman times. It has an impressive amphitheatre, which in its day could hold 25,000 spectators. Vincent van Gogh once lived and painted here, and Arles is still a popular city for artists.
Nice
If you want to experience the atmosphere of the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur), head to Nice. Here you can stroll along the famous promenade, browse the cafés and shops in the Old Town, or sunbathe on the city's long beach.
Cannes
Cannes offers exclusive luxury yachts, casinos and champagne bars, as well as restaurants and shops for ordinary wallets. There is a cosy old town, a fine sandy beach and boat trips to the small island of Ile du Marguerite.
Do you like casino, but prefer to play online? At Spelpressen, you can read all about how it works with gambling without a Swedish licence.
3 x cosy towns in France
There are also plenty of smaller French towns that are cosy and charming. Many of these also have a lot of history to offer.
Honfleur
Honfleur is a charming little medieval town on the west coast of France. The medieval houses are tightly packed and the harbour is full of fishing boats. In the narrow streets you'll find plenty of seafood restaurants, and in the shops you can browse fresh seafood, mussels and oysters.
Concarneau
In Concarneu, Brittany, there is a walled town on the water that dates back to the 14th century. This fortified town, known as a 'ville close', consists of charming medieval buildings and narrow alleys. Today you can find small restaurants and cosy little shops here.
Sète
Sète is a charming harbour town located on a narrow spit of land on the Mediterranean coast, just south of Montpellier. Several canals run through the town and there are plenty of boats and outdoor cafés. The city feels almost like France's answer to Venice.
3 x attractions in France
Whether you're interested in art, history or architecture, there are plenty of places to visit in France. Here are three that we particularly liked.
Mont-Saint-Michel
UNESCO World Heritage Site Mont-Saint-Michel is located on the Mont-Tombe peninsula, rising mightily from the sea, on the border between Normandy and Brittany. As well as a monastery, it has a church and winding streets with restaurants and shops.
War memories in Normandy
Normandy has a beautiful coastline with long sandy beaches and a dramatic history from World War II, when the Allies carried out Operation Overlord and the Normandy landings. There are many war memorials, such as in Arromanches where you can see the breakwaters used in the war.
Carcassonne
Carcassonne is not only a board game but also a French medieval city in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. This fortified city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by around three million tourists every year. Be prepared for a big dose of the Middle Ages!

Many familiar places and some unfamiliar ones.
I like the area of Camarc. Aigues-Mortes is also such a nice little town. Have lived nearby and there are so many wonderful little places there, not tourist resorts, just nice little places.
Generally speaking, I prefer small towns to big ones, so I like Honfleur and Séte, both beautiful and historically interesting.
The invasion coast is special.
There are so many wonderful places in France, it's hard to choose.
Have a nice weekend!

Mrs Kerstin says:
France is my favourite country in all categories! You mention many wonderful places, but if you have to mention another area, the Basque Country is fantastic with Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz and the nice villages further inland. And why not visit Île de Ré on the Atlantic coast, to name another fine destination. My only objection to your description is when you write that there is a sandy beach in Nice. It's not sand but pebbles - you really need proper bathing shoes if you're going to swim there unless you have very tender feet!
22 November 2020 - 20:59
Helena says:
Glad you also like France Kerstin! Thanks for more exciting tips! Thanks also for the comment about the beach in Nice. I have removed "sand" now so it only says beach, so it will be more correct!
