Summer 2020 - not like other summers

What are Swedes doing in summer 2020? One thing is certain, and that is that this summer is not like other summers. Covid-19 has rightly made us worried about socialising too closely, while many of our usual holiday routes have been closed. So, how are Swedes spending the summer of 2020?

Summer 2020

The spring of 2020 was characterised by concerns about COVID-19, with people thinking more about the risk of infection and remote work than about holidays. When the worst fears subsided, there were restrictions on what you could or should do. First you had to stay within the county and then within two hours from home by car. What would happen in the summer was unclear. No wonder many people planned master swimmer or home!

When we planned our summer holidays, we had plan B and plan C. What about plan A? Well, there was the European trip that we decided early on to cancel. Plan B was a trip along the Göta Canal by motorhome (if travelling in Sweden was allowed) and plan C was a motorhome trip along the Roslag coast (if we needed to stay within two hours of home). Now it became, as you may know, the Göta Canal. Fun!

On this journey we realise that we not are the only ones who have planned a swimming holiday. Popular resorts such as Söderlöping, Vadstena and Askersund are really packed. We have been travelling by motorhome in Europe for 12 years, but have never experienced anything like this. If you want a place on a pitch, you have to arrive at 10 o'clock in the morning. Otherwise the pitches are gone.

Some have also opted for a 'home holiday' this year. If the term "Swedish holiday" refers to holidays in Sweden, then "home holiday" refers to holidays at home. Poorer personal finances, or concerns about travelling, may mean that this year people are choosing to spend their holidays at home. Maybe you take the opportunity to renovate your patio, spend time in your summer cottage, explore the local area or just spend quality time with your family.

One thing that has become clear is that hiking and experiencing natural areas is more popular than ever. It is almost as if in some places it has become crowded in nature reserves. Of course, many people also engage in activities such as baking or creative endeavours such as crafts. According to several newspapers, online gambling has also become more popular this year. Gambling is getting easier all the time, and it is now possible to play casino without a bank ID as well as with a bank ID, making gambling accessible to more people. Read more here.

Or maybe travelling abroad?

But then some of the restrictions were lifted and it became possible to travel abroad. At least to some countries. As of 10 July, it became possible to travel to several countries. If it was utilised? Yes, of course. We have heard from several people who took the opportunity to travel abroad after the advisory was released, including to popular Croatia.

At the same time, many people had already planned a holiday in Sweden. And "abroad" remains until another year. Even if some people take the opportunity to travel abroad now, we believe that many will take the opportunity to experience Sweden this year. Is this true for you? Are you holidaying in Sweden or travelling abroad this summer?
