Wassbackens camping in Töreboda has a fantastic location by the Göta Canal. The canal runs right next to the campsite and you can park your motorhome so that you have a view of the boats chugging by or driving into the guest harbour. If you want, you can cycle to the lock in Tåtorp.

Wassbacken campsite
Several readers told us about Wassbackens camping in Töreboda, which made us curious. We arrived early in the morning to have a chance to get a place, but we had not decided to stay. We thought "let's see how it feels". As soon as we rolled in, we knew we were staying here!
Wassbackens camping is located one kilometre south of Töreboda in Västergötland, by the Göta Canal bridge in Vassbacken.
On the way to Wassbacken's campsite - Beateberg's church
Before the visit to Wassbacken's campsite, we had been to Forsvik Mill and Karlsborg Fortress. We drove on small roads through forests and countryside, and suddenly a fantastic church appeared.
Beateberg Church is a hexagonal central church built in 1877-1880 to the designs of architect Emil Viktor Langlet. Centre churches have equally long transepts and can be round or polygonal. Isn't this church beautiful?
At Wassbacken's campsite
After a little spinning on small roads we arrived at Wassbackens camping in Töreboda. There are 60 campsites here and many of them are beautifully situated along the canal. Göta Canal go right next to the campsite and once you have parked, you can sit and watch the boats passing by, or possibly docking in the guest harbour.
You can stay in hostels (closed in 2020) or cottages, and there is a café and restaurant. You can also rent a canoe or bicycle, for example.
We understand that many people have spoken highly of this campsite. Here you have all the services that you usually have at a campsite, but a much calmer atmosphere than at many large campsites. This is really a fantastic place!
Bike ride to Tåtorp
The weather was relatively nice when we arrived, but it was going to rain so we hurried to get out the car. our electric bikes. We cycled along the canal to the lock in Tåtorp, which is a distance of about 5 kilometres in each direction.
Along the way you can watch and wave to all the boats you meet. If you wish, you can cross to the small artificial island of Lanthöjden, where there is an obelisk from the 1820s marking the highest point of the canal at 91.5 metres.
What is Peter doing here? Well, he thought we should have a selfie of ourselves with the bikes by the canal. He didn't think the selfie stick turned out well and so he wanted a video where we "cycle past" the camera. Then you have to be creative! Here Peter hangs up his mobile phone and selfie stick ...
Here is the result. Quite ok, isn't it? The film will come later. There will be a whole film about the Göta Canal that we will show in a "collection post" when we come home from the trip.
The lock in Tåtorp
The lock at Tåtorp was completed in 1814, but was rebuilt in 1848 because the masonry had shifted. The section between Tåtorp and Lanthöjden is called the Berg Canal. On this 3.5 kilometre long stretch, the canal builders had to blast their way through bedrock. It took seven years to complete, and the work was mainly carried out by the Skaraborg Regiment.
Today there is a small café and a hostel in Tåtorp. There is also a simple small car park without electricity. We cycled out on the graveled little pier with boat docks and looked at the nice view. Then we cycled back ... in the mud and rain. We were soooo muddy when we arrived. We should have taken a photo, but we were fully occupied of washing the bikes and our soaked clothes!

Eva says:
Yes, we have been to Wassbacken, on two occasions, but never stopped. The first time we came with our long caravan and could not cross the bridge because of the overhang. The second time I stood in the reception for over a quarter of an hour without being acknowledged with anything other than "coming soon", I chose to go back to the caravan and we drove on.
We spent the night in Tåtorp last spring. Desolate but close to the canal. ?
26 July 2020 - 10:18
Helena says:
Oops, that's a bit sad! It is always sad when you feel that you don't get help! Tåtorp is really close to the canal. Probably less desolate in July 😉.

Hi Monica, how strange! Did you write a comment before this one that disappeared? I've looked in the rubbish bin and the trash can (comments sometimes end up there), but haven't found anything... (However, no comments are immediately visible. We approve all comments before they appear, so it can take a little while sometimes).

And even stranger because now this one came along 🙂 .

Sometimes it seems that the writer himself can see his comment, at least temporarily. But then we still have to approve them, so I have also had to approve this one 🙂.

A lot you can see and experience Fun! Have never camped here but Tåtorp with surroundings are known areas have had relatives cottage. Cycling here along the canal banks we have done a lot. I grew up in Töreboda, a "godforsaken place" according to my Norwegian mother. And the ferry here already existed in the 50s. But I think they changed it to a newer version. Then it probably cost 10 öre to take and the ferryman pulled us across the canal. Often with bicycles.
Keep up the good work.

Understand that this is familiar territory for you! So, did the ferry cost money then? Now it was free ...
