Europe is the continent where we have travelled the most, often for several months at a time - and once for a whole year. However, we still have a lot to see and experience in Europe, including 15 countries where we have yet to set foot.
Table of contents
How many countries are there in Europe?
How many countries there are in Europe depends on how you count. We have chosen to start from Wikipedia's list of 49 countries, which also includes countries that are only partly in Europe. Based on this definition, we have visited 34 European countries and have 15 to go.
The fifteen countries we have left to visit
Here are the 15 countries we have left to visit. We'd like to visit all of them, but the ones that appeal to us the most are probably Georgia, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia. All photos in this post have been borrowed from Pixabay (the top photo is of the Transfagaras road in Romania).
1. Andorra
Andorra is the small country on the border between Spain and France. The country is mountainous and we have friends who have gone there on a skiing holiday, but maybe it would also be interesting to experience Andorra in the summer?
2. Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is an exotic-sounding destination, which always makes us curious. The capital is Baku, where you can wander around a mix of Middle Eastern flavour, historic buildings and modern skyscrapers.
3 Bulgaria
Bulgaria has a Black Sea coastline and for a while it was popular to go to Sunny Beach. We are perhaps more curious to experience the capital Sofia or perhaps Nessebar, the coastal city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
4th Georgia
Georgia has long attracted us with stunning photos of green mountain landscapes. Here you can experience both culturally and historically interesting old cities and the exciting capital Tblisi. Georgia is also known for making great wine.
5. Kazakhstan
Countries ending in 'city' tend to sound exotic, and Kazakhstan is no exception. In fact, only a small part of this large country is in Europe, the rest is Asia. Perhaps it would be interesting to visit the capital Nur-sultan, which until recently was called Astana? But then we are of course in Asia ...
6. Kosovo
Kosovo is a country whose independence is disputed and is recognised by 93 of the 193 UN states, including Sweden. It borders North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia. Here you can visit the city of Prizren.
7. Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a mini-country on the border between Switzerland and Austria. Here you can visit the capital Vaduz and the princely castle. The country also has several museums and vineyards.
8. Luxembourg
Luxembourg is a small country on the border between France, Belgium and Germany. We were close to the border when we visited Trier in Germany in the summer of 2018. At the time, we didn't have enough time left in our holiday to explore another country, but we got curious! In Luxembourg, for example, you can visit the castle of Vianden.
9. Moldova
Located between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is a country with relatively few tourists. The capital is Chisinau. It has a number of attractions, including grand buildings, churches and statues, as well as the underground cave monastery of Orheiul Vechi. You can also visit vineyards or perhaps take a trip to the breakaway state of Transnistria.
10. Monaco
The Principality of Monaco is situated on the Mediterranean Sea and is home to Monte Carlo, which is full of exclusive hotels, expensive cars and huge luxury yachts. The casino in Monte Carlo is one of the most famous in the world. In times of corona, there are of course advantages to taking care of any gambling online - but if there is anywhere you want to experience a real casino, it is in Monte Carlo!
11. Romania
Romania is a large country with a coastline on the Black Sea. We have long been keen to travel here, and have read exciting reports in various travel blogs. The capital Bucharest is attractive, as is the mythical Transylvania region.
12. san marino
San Marino is a very small country completely surrounded by Italy. It includes a well-preserved castle on a high cliff, which looks dramatic and imaginative when seen in pictures.
13th Serbia
We have often thought about travelling to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, but so far it hasn't happened. Here you can visit the Belgrade Fortress, take boat trips on the Sava River or visit the Nikola Tesla Museum. Or you can simply discover the city's atmosphere in the shopping streets and restaurants.
14. Slovakia
We've never visited Slovakia, but had actually planned to include the country in this summer's motorhome trip. There are mountains, caves, castles and historical sights on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Of course, we would also like to experience the capital city of Bratislava.
15. Belarus
When I (Helena) travelled by train when I was young, the train passed through Belarus and I saw the station in Minsk, but that doesn't count, does it? Making a visit "for real" would be interesting!
Which countries in Europe do you have left to visit?
Which countries in Europe do you have left to visit? Which ones are you most curious about?

Andorra is very nice in the summer, I have been there. What you have to consider is that they are not part of the EU so it was expensive with a mobile phone and that there are other rules for importing alcohol.

Helena says:
Good to think about the EU and telephony and internet! Some countries outside the EU have concluded agreements with Sweden regarding this, but it is always important to check beforehand what applies!

Lena in Wales and Spain says:
Several countries I have not been to and some sound really exciting.
Have been to Andorra, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, San Marino, Slovakia and Belarus. Some of them quite a long time ago.
Enjoy the beautiful summer!

I have 17 countries left to visit. I was a bit surprised that some countries belong to Europe, or that they even exist 😉 I don't know much about the new countries that have emerged since I studied geography in school 🙂.
12 August 2020 - 8:52
Helena says:
Some countries, like Kazakhstan for example, are mostly Asia and only a small part of Europe. But now I included them too... 😉 And yes, the map is redrawn from time to time!!!!

Eva/Living like Eva says:
16 countries left: for example, I have almost all of the former Yugoslavia left. I had a trip to Belarus and Ukraine booked for May this year, and beyond that Romania is probably the most appealing.
Georgia and Azerbaijan were fantastic, and yes, Andorra is very nice in the summer I remember (1982 :-)).

Helena says:
Georgia and Azerbaijan sound exciting! Sorry about the cancellation of your trip. Hope you get the chance to do it at another time!

Last summer when we travelled around the Baltic Sea, we could have visited Belarus but refrained due to visa requirements. Have heard from others we met on the roads that it is well worth a visit so maybe we should have taken the opportunity.
There are more countries we have not visited but maybe it can be done under the current circumstances. We have a map on the Wheelhouse page where you can put coloured foil pieces on the countries we have been to with the motorhome.
12 August 2020 - 8:58
Helena says:
The visa thing has stopped us too, including to Russia. We were at the border last summer, but in that case you would have had to apply in advance (although we have been to Russia on other occasions).

Coming from Bulgaria myself, the northern part of the Black Sea coastline is nice. Nesebar can be a bit too touristy during the summer. The mountains are also nice, Rila mountain is more dramatic with nice monasteries and in Rodopi mountain there are many genuine villages. Nice trip!

Helena says:
Thank you so much for the tips Maria!

My daughter has lived in Luxembourg for many years so we have visited the country/city often. Before that we saw it as so many others, something you just passed by. Then, when we started driving a motorhome, we learned that many people turn in to fill up because petrol prices are lower. This is a fantastic litre of land! Situated in a fairytale landscape with rolling vineyards, it is a mixture of the Germany and France it alternately belonged to. The language is French and Luxembourgish reminiscent of Dutch. It is German orderly and tidy but French life-affirming with a culinary cuisine that beats most!
The city of Luxembourg is incredibly beautiful with the old part at the bottom of a ravine. Walls, castles and history all in one. And it's a lively city, the financial centre of Europe, where Rolex watches shine and the most common cars are BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Lots of young people and fancy shopping streets but genuine countryside. The more you spend time there, the more you love it!

I got curious and pulled up the Wikipedia list. We can only conclude that we still have a lot to see. This year we had booked Iceland and possibly travelled by motorhome to the Baltic States and then included some new countries, but today we have 23 countries left, including the tempting countries in the east...
12 August 2020 - 16:41
Helena says:
You hope that you can travel a bit more again soon ...!

Monet, Luxembourg seems exciting! And even more exciting now after your presentation! 🙂

Helena from Finland says:
Oops, we have a lot left to discover?. Russia (only been in Vyborg), Ukraine, Romania, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Iceland (only stopover), Serbia, Ireland, Bosnia, Moldova, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Malta, Lichtenstein and Vatican City. That makes 19 countries. Let's hope that the coronavirus will soon disappear.

Helena says:
It's still good to have a little left to look forward to 🙂 Yes, you probably hope that you can soon travel a little more again!

Wow, that's a lot of people I didn't know!!! According to that list, I have only been to 18 countries... The usual ones when doing a tour of Europe: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Greece, Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, Monaco, France, Andorra, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, United Kingdom... We are most keen to go to Scotland and Ireland. Also the Netherlands and visit acquaintances. Finland also feels like a good destination and Iceland. We will see what happens and when. Then we are very fond of Sweden and have northern Sweden left to explore first!!!
12 August 2020 - 19:38
Helena says:
It wasn't just "normal" countries I think ... 😉 But there are many countries in Europe to explore! We liked Ireland very much. We would also like to visit Scotland!

Of the countries you listed, I have stopped over in Bulgaria once a hundred years ago. Does that count? 😉 Of the remaining countries I have a lot to see. I have mostly done long journeys in my travelling career 🙂.

Emilie - Travels by Knutte says:
Yes, there are so many countries to visit! I have 21 left! This year I would have visited three new ones: Finland, Russia and Romania. But I'm most keen (right now, it changes) on Russia, Iceland and Malta. Of those you listed, I can recommend San Marino and Slovakia, although I've only been to Bratislava. There should be nice hiking there too. 🙂
