Anything for the blog? What's not to do for a great picture or an exciting post? Yesterday we started talking about weird or daring things we've done for the blog, and we realised that most of the time it's pretty fun. But sometimes you might have to say no ...

Everything for the blog
Sometimes we, and maybe other bloggers, joke about "anything for the blog". We usually say it when we're reluctant to do something, and then realise it might make a cool photo or a fun blog post. Sometimes it's about taking a detour past an interesting sight or climbing a little higher to get a good view.
It can also be about ordering a more unusual dish or ... doing something daring that one never would have done otherwise. Good or bad? We talked a bit about "everything for the blog" yesterday and came to the conclusion that we often get more fun and exciting experiences thanks to it. But you have to know your limits of course.
Challenging yourself
I (Helena) have challenged myself many times thanks to "anything for the blog" mindset. In retrospect, I'm very happy about it, because I've had many more exciting experiences and of course feel proud that I dared. I'm crazy afraid of heights and just think of all the (horrible) cable cars I've travelled in the name of the blog. Imagine how many experiences I would have missed if I had not done so!
The craziest thing was when we tested it. hang gliding in Interlaken, Switzerland. I was probably convinced that I would bail out at the last second, but then I didn't!
Peter is not as hairy as I am, but I am... completely I'm sure the "anything for the blog" mindset makes him more playful. I just think about all the times he's been hanging out, climbing scaffolding, climbing pipes, trying on clothes and trying out crazy play things. I doubt he would have done all that if I hadn't been standing there with my camera at the ready...!
Having the courage to say no
But sometimes you have to say no! First of all, you shouldn't do dangerous things. Unfortunately, there are some examples of influencers who have lost their lives when they have stood too close to cliffs, thrown themselves into wild rapids or hung too far out of train windows to get "the perfect picture". When I see these kinds of photos on Instagram, I press never the like button, because I don't want to encourage that.
Have we ever said no? Yes, on a blogging trip in Finland, there was a lot of talk about swimming in ice pools, but nothat's where the line is drawn. No blog in the world can make us voluntarily swim in an ice bath. And no, it doesn't help if you write in the comments section that "it's so lovely". There will be no ice bath for us!
Do you recognise yourself?
What have you done (or not done) for a blog, Instagram account, group print or photo? Tell us, tell us!
4000mil says:
Hm, difficult. I don't think I do much daring for the blog, but if I do, it's probably because I want to.
However, a few times, the programme has forced me to go off-road cycling in arranged blog trips. And I really hate that, so now I have decided that next time I will say no already when the programme comes. 🙂
Otherwise, it's more that we pull ourselves together and go on that trip even though we're tired, etc... In this way, the blog allows us to see and experience more.
This summer, for example, we would probably have lazed around the cottage more if we didn't have the blog. And not spent the night in haunted houses and climbed landscape mountains etc.

Yes, saying no from the beginning sounds wise in that case! But all the things you do a little "extra" for the blog, do you feel as we do that it actually becomes a bonus with extra experiences?

4000mil says:
It will be a bonus that you really make sure to be active and see and do the maximum. But at the same time a latent basic stress level in the body that may not be useful?

Helena says:
Wise reflection! That can certainly be the case. Don't really know how to get past it, it (maybe) comes with time?

Wow. I very often think "All for the blog" and have done things that I absolutely would not have done otherwise. For example, when I crawled out to the edge of Horseshoe Bend outside Page, Arizona, crying and with my heart in my throat:

A disgusting experience that still gives me butterflies just thinking about it...
But you get to experience more when you are a blogger and challenge yourself in different ways 😀.
But that kind of paragliding, who knows?

Helena says:
Dramatic picture! I am just like you, hate walking near cliffs (and also hate when Peter walks near cliffs ;))

What a fun post!
Well, it happens that you end up in places where there are warnings of rockfall and other things, which you would not have ended up in if it were not for the blog...

Helena says:
Glad you liked it! 🙂 Yes, anything can happen 😉 .

Daniel on FlyingDryden says:
I can't think of anything immediately actually. I have parachuted and bungy jumped, ziplined and done some other sweaty stuff but that's because I think it's fun. Then the blog doesn't matter, even if there is of course good content. So okay, maybe somewhere back there is blog content but usually nothing that determines whether I should do something or not.
On the other hand, if you are on a blog trip or similar, you often get the opportunity to try things that you would not have done yourself. But it's probably more about visiting places and eating at restaurants you would never have found otherwise. 🙂
I am keen on paragliding and it is available in Åre. Should perhaps be on the to-do list. 🙂

Helena says:
Yes, you are so adventurous anyway!!! 🙂 But as I said, there can be other types of experiences as well. And of course, on blog trips it can be an island programme that makes you do completely different things than you would have chosen yourself.

What a funny post 😀
No, I haven't done anything daring for 'All for the blog'.
I started blogging in 2006 and in 2002 I did a cool thing, but it was more "All for the sake of my husband". He had bought rafting tickets for the two of us and it was the last trip on the Pite River. I have a drowning phobia, so I said yes. I thought my last moment had come, screaming in all tones 😀 but proud afterwards.

Helena says:
Understand you exactly!!! I have done rafting twice. In New Zealand it was ok (less steep rapids), but in Vindelälven ... huh!!!! I probably also thought that my last moment had come 😉.

BP says:
Now I'm not even close to your adventurousness, so to speak. But I am not afraid of heights. However, I would never have dared to hang-glide. To jump into an icebox - over my dead body!
The only thing I "dare" with "everything for the blog" in mind is to play mammarazzi ;-)

Helena says:
Good example! It is also a thing that you might do extra, i.e. how, what and who you photograph!

Daniela | Discovering The Planet says:
A fun challenge. I actually rarely do challenges for the sake of the blog. More for my own if I think something seems exciting to try. My challenge is to be in pictures even though I think it's hard :D. And ice vac, agree... NEVER :))))
09 September 2020 - 16:40
Helena says:
It is also a challenge, ie to be in the picture if you think it is hard. I think we all challenge ourselves in different ways 🙂 .

Lena - good for the soul says:
I never thought you would go on that paragliding flight. I probably wouldn't have done that. But yes, many times I do more things for the sake of the blog. I only see it as positive because I get to experience more.

Helena - Oh darling, let's be adventurers says:
I've thought "for the blog" a lot, but it often comes after I've already decided what to do. On a few occasions, however, I have done things solely for the blog, but it has been about visiting a museum or something else that I really think is boring. But which in retrospect turned out to be quite interesting anyway.
I love taking detours if there is something interesting on the road, or if there is a promise of a nice view. Kenny has travelled many small dirt roads with me, haha.
I totally agree that you have to say no sometimes if something doesn't feel right. I've been on trips with programmes and turned things down if I felt it wasn't for me. Even though it might make great blog material.
Regards she who took what was probably the last dip of the year about a week ago in a cold lake 😉 Not really bathing ice vac in Finland in January cold, but still a little cold in the beginning. And I am probably one of those who really want to write that "it is so wonderful" but if you do not think so yourself, it does not matter what others think.
