Summer 2020 was a different summer for us, with motorhome trips around Sweden. It didn't turn out as planned, but it turned out well anyway. We have really visited a lot of fantastic places, and we will try to pick out a few gems on a best list.
Table of contents
Our trips this summer
Our long motorhome trip in summer 2020 took us along three canals: Göta Canal, Trollhätte canal and Dalsland canal. We also had time for several short motorhome trips in Roslagen, Uppland and Bergslagen. We experienced many beautiful places!
We were inspired by the blogger 4000 miles of posts to write a list of what has been "best" during this summer's travelling. We've done our own version, selecting the summer "winners" from our own travels in Sweden.
Best landscape
In very fierce competition, we have decided to appoint Västergötland. Landscapes Östergötland, Dalsland and Uppland were fierce competitors, but Västergötland still offers a huge amount of exciting history. Here we visited Karlsborg Fortress, Varnhem Abbey Church, Trollhättan and Läckö Castle.
Best resort
Oh, how difficult! We have chosen the charming Söderköping, which is beautifully situated by the Göta Canal. Here you can check out the locks, walk around in cosy alleys and enjoy good ice cream. Did the resort have competition? Yes, definitely! Other nice places we visited this summer are for example Vadstena, Askersund, Motala, Trollhättan, Öregrund and Norrtäljeto name just a few.
Best attraction
We have decided to appoint the aqueduct in Håverud as the winner. What an amazing architectural masterpiece! Everyone should go here at some point in their lives, that's how it feels. Other great sights that competed for the prize? Yes, we were also very impressed by the following, for example Läckö Castle, Bohus Fortress, Karlsborg Fortress, Varnhem Abbey Church, Alvastra monastery ruins and Berg's locks.
Best natural area
Without competition, competition wins Tiveden National Park first prize. This was really a wonderful natural area with magical hiking trails, beautiful beaches and dramatically large boulders. Other nice nature areas we visited this summer are Riddersholm Nature Reserve and Norr Malma nature reservewhich are both located in the municipality of Norrtälje.
Best museum
We've visited many museums this summer and, in fierce competition, we are selecting the Forsvik mill to winners. Here you could walk around an interesting old industrial area, and we also liked their exhibition about the women of Forsvik. Other interesting museums we visited this summer are Technical Museum in Stockholm, Viking village Storholmen in the municipality of Norrtälje, Vänersborg Museum, Pythagoras Industrial Museum in Norrtälje and Albert Engström Museum in Grisslehamn. We also liked the canal museum in Håverud.
Best campsite
We have chosen Wassbacken campsite at its best, as it is magically located on the Göta Canal. It doesn't get much better than this! Other great campsites we visited this summer include Kapellskär campsite in the municipality of Norrtälje, Ängskärs havscamping in Uppland, Gräsö camping in Roslagen and Grisslehamn campsite in Roslagen.
Best place to park
We liked very much the nice the car park in Trollhättan. Here you stand nicely with a view of the canal and there is also good service in the form of electricity, the possibility of filling water and emptying grey and black water, and toilets (although these are on the other side of the lock). Other pitches we have liked this summer are Yxeltorps gård in Stegeborg, The glassworks in Borensberg, the car park in Dals Långed and the car park in Öregrund.
Best free campsites
We appoint free camping at Djurlångenwhere we stayed last weekend, to the best of the summer. There we stood really fantastically nice with a view of the lake. Other good fricampings during the summer have been in Norrtälje and at Lake Erken in the municipality of Norrtälje.
Feel free to comment, or make your own list of the best of summer 2020!

I may have to re-evaluate Västergötland which I have been to 1 million times because my sister should be there. You actually haven't seen much more than child-friendly activities.

Yes, in Västergötland there are really a lot of interesting things, not least from a historical perspective! But recognise that the experience is affected by how you have holidayed and with whom, etc.

How nice that you have chosen Västergötland as landscape of the year! Even we realised last spring that there was an incredible amount around us that we had been blind to.
It will be fun to see how tourism develops in Sweden when (if?) we can travel freely again. Anyway, we are very happy with our motorhome trip north, even if we are attracted by the festivals in Germany ......

What an inspiring list and how happy I am that you have found so many favourites in my home region, Västra Götaland and Skaraborg. Several in first place too, fun. But I see that we have some left to visit, we will do that in the future. I particularly liked the fine depiction you made of the Göta Canal this summer. Sweden is fantastic ???
