We can count five new faults on the motorhome after this summer's trips. We have repaired and replaced most things recently, you might think, but there are always new things that can break.
Table of contents
New faults on the motorhome
Yes, even though we have been fixing the camper all year (and last autumn), there were new things that could break. We have managed to fix some of the faults on the list (numbers 1-3). When it comes to errors number 4-5, we are happy to receive tips and cheers!
1. the exhaust pipe was hanging loose
The exhaust pipe suddenly began to hang loose, at the end of the trip in Poland and the Czech Republic. We have already managed to fix this, at Kihlströms in Spånga.
2. Vacuum hose to the idler broke
Another thing that broke during the trip was a vacuum hose for the idle. We noticed this because the idle went unevenly. We have also managed to fix this, at the same company as above.
3. Windscreen wiper motor almost broke - again
At the end of the summer, it started to sound strange when we started up the windscreen wipers. We really hoped that it was a small problem, but it wasn't. It was the windscreen wiper motor that was breaking down. again. How often can such an expensive little motorbike break down?
Our windscreen wiper motor broke down in 2017and we replaced it then. But now it was time again! We had to pay around 9000 SEK for it, on top of the thousands for number 1 and 2 in the list. Sometimes it is expensive to have a motorhome!
4. grey water tank shut-off broke.
The shutdown of the grey water tank broke on one of the last days of the Poland and Czech Republic trip. This shutdown means that the not discharging grey water (i.e. waste water from sinks and washbasins) at any time, but only when you decide to empty it, preferably when emptying grey water at a campsite.
There is a handle under the motorhome that can be turned left or right, and this is connected to a cable that closes and opens the pipe. Now the wire has broken. Does anyone know where to get one?
5. The fridge does not work on LPG
Last (but not least!), the fridge has stopped working on LPG. It works on electricity, but we also want to be able to fricamp so we need the fridge to run on LPG. We've had a tip that the pipe in the burner can rust, which causes rust flakes to come off and clog it. We have not had time to address this yet. Does anyone know anyone in the Stockholm area who is knowledgeable about this?
If you have a motorhome, have you had any faults that you needed to fix this year or has everything gone smoothly?
Helena from Finland says:
Oh, too bad about motorhome failures! We also had problems with the fridge at the beginning of the summer. Tom blew out the burner, which was probably clogged by something. Has worked since then. Hope you get it fixed because you can't live without refrigerator soap.

Helena says:
Glad that it worked out! We will also grab and try to fix the fridge... No, you can't be without it!

Henny says:
I had the same problem with gas for the fridge. This summer. My son and his mate used a sewing needle to get the burner working again. Something, probably a soot flake, had clogged the pipe.
I hope you don't have any more problems with your lovely motorhome. ?

Kenneth Risberg says:
Regarding the refrigerator, it is most likely the burner that needs cleaning. There is a good description on Youtube of how to do this.
Wire for grey water drainage can be bought at Biltema and fixed yourself, Peter is a handy man so it should not have to cost the shirt and more.

Maria Carlström says:
For us, it was a small moka bean ignition... which they replaced in 5 minutes before we went to the beach basket challenge.

Good luck to you. ?mvh Maria and Lars

Kenneth, thank you very much for great tips!!! Will check this out!

Boring with errors that follow each other. Many people seem to have had problems with refrigerators this year, according to blogs I've read. You can probably blow away the rust in the pipes yourself.
Our fridge/freezer went out completely after the 1st week of holiday. Had to buy a cool box, so we could continue travelling. Ordered the so-called black box, control box in early August and still waiting to receive it.
Have a nice weekend with the grumbling

Helena says:
Yes, I guess refrigerators do go haywire sometimes. We will try to tinker with this! Hope you get the control box soon!!!

Our fridge needed to be swept. So now it works. Ordered a new filter which apparently has to be changed every two years.
08 October 2020 - 8:47
Helena says:
Thank you very much! Maybe that's something we need to do too!

Thord says:
Regarding wipers. If you let the wipers run when the windscreen is barely wet, they are so heavy that the engine overheats. Use interval wipers. Or switch them off from time to time.
08 October 2020 - 15:55
Helena says:
Thanks for the tip! According to Fiat, the engine was out, but we will keep this in mind!

Magnus says:
We had to change the solenoid valve/regulator that lets the gas through (connected to the control box). Slammed together and stuck. Can sometimes be caused by the slightly different quality of LPG filling companies (a little oil in the LPG). Costs from about a thousand pounds.
Haninge campservice or Caravanhallen can certainly help.

Thank you so much for the tips! We haven't had time to start testing yet, but it's great to be able to use all the tips we've received! ?

Where is that filter located?

It is with cars, as with people, when they start to get old. ? Then come the ailments. I think all of us who have cars that are more than 10 years old have started to have some problems. With us, even the AC has stopped working. Some hoses needed to be replaced, but it would, with work, go on about 15-20 thousand depending on the labour cost. We have to open the windows if it gets too hot. We have changed the windscreen wipers once. We hope to test the fridge again soon, for the 4th time. Of course, it costs to fix all the small faults, but cheaper than changing a motorhome.
08 October 2020 - 9:32
Helena says:
Yes, that's right... And everything costs! But as I said, buying a new motorhome costs even more.

An accident rarely comes alone, they say, and sometimes this is unfortunately all too true.
As we don't have a motorhome, I haven't had any faults with any of them and can't give any tips on the 4 and 5. But I see that you have already received some good advice. The blog world is very good 🙂

Helena says:
Yes, great with all the tips! 🙂

Maria/Magnolia Magis says:
Agree with the previous speaker here. The husband said that these are easy mistakes. You both can fix it! I myself never think about when things didn't work in the motorhome as I am lucky to have my own mechanic...?? Good luck!
08 October 2020 - 10:01
Helena says:
Practical with own mechanic 🙂 We hope we can solve it. We have received many tips now, so when we get a gap with time and better weather so! (For us, it is also a bit of a challenge to find WHERE we can mechanise. Not so fun to lie under the car in a public car park;))

Across the board says:
The fridge probably needs to be "blown clean" with some compressed air. Google it and you will find a YouTube film, we did...
Good luck to you

Thanks for the tips! Peter watched some Youtube films yesterday!

Jeanette Ritze'n says:
We had exactly the same problem with our fridge. Changed a grey control box today, the one that tells the gas to go to the burner. Now the gas goes again.
08 October 2020 - 15:26
Helena says:
Thank you for telling us! And I'm glad it worked out!

For all of you who choose to switch to newer refrigerators.
I am happy to buy your non-functioning spare parts fridge. Hope to get a working one of the parts.

On my Burstner 532 from - 97 is an Electrolux cabinet, it ran neither on electricity nor 12 v, only on LPG. However, cooled very poorly. Left at the leisure centre in Ängelholm. They took out the fridge and turned it upside down, stood so for 2 days?! changed some fuses that went. Now it goes again like hell on all fronts. 2000 cost rope.

Kent Jonsson says:
Hello everyone, even I who do not have a motorhome but who has now lived in a caravan for over 7 years, thanks for the tips and interesting reading.
I'm planning to get a campervan instead of a caravan, as it will give me better access to everything on wheels.
And since I'm also currently having problems with my fridge, I thought I'd take the opportunity to ask if anyone has a non-functioning fridge for sale so I can put together a working one with the help of spare parts, as mine now does not do more than ignite the gasoline then not much more happens unfortunately.
Regards
Kent

Mr Christer Lindfors says:
I have been using Turtle Wax Clearvue Rain Cleaner on my car's windscreen since the early 2000s. Since then I have not bought any windscreen washer fluid. When the car has been serviced, the fluid has been topped up. While driving, the windscreen wipers do not need to be used because the water is carried away by the airflow and the glass is not scratched by bad wipers. The wiper blades and the wiper motor are saved. It should also be mentioned that in the summer, the wind does not blow as hard and in the winter the snow does not freeze as hard. The glass becomes so smooth. I recommend you all to try this.
