Kroměříž gardens and castle
Kroměříž Gardens in the Czech Republic are for those who want to stroll through beautiful flower beds, fountains, ponds, labyrinths and colonnades. If you also visit the castle, you can see the marvellous golden halls.
It's all a bit of a fairy tale, and we're not the only ones who think so. The gardens are typical 18th century gardens and are sometimes compared to the gardens of Versailles. The site is considered an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European Baroque princely residence and gardens, and is therefore a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During our recent visit to Ostrava we made a detour to see a place we had long dreamed of: the Kroměříž Gardens. We realise that we need to come here again, when we have time for all that there is to see and experience, but at least we got to stroll in the gardens. So, enjoy the photos from two fabulously beautiful gardens in the Czech Republic!
Kroměříž Gardens and Castle is located in the town of Kroměříž, at the foot of the Chřiby mountain range in the Czech region of Moravia. By car, it takes about 45 minutes to drive from Brno and about the same time to drive from Olomouc.
The flower garden
The Flower Garden in Kroměříž is also sometimes referred to as The Pleasure Garden. This garden is located in the south-western part of the town and is built in the Italian style with elaborate hedges in geometric shapes and structures lined with statues and busts.
The garden was built in 1665-1675 and is preserved almost completely intact, making it an extremely rare example of a Baroque garden. The most striking feature of the garden is perhaps the central round building (rotunda), around which geometric shapes are structured in the form of hedges and flower arrangements. The building is also stunningly beautiful inside!
The garden also has a long arcade lined with arches and bust-like statues. At the end of the arcade there is a small narrow staircase, so you can climb to the top and walk along the upper part of the arcade, from where you have a nice view of the garden.
Great views and fantastic weather! We were here in September this year, and the summer heat remained with around 28 degrees during the day.
In the garden you will also find avenues, fountains and a large labyrinth. At one end of the garden there are also two ponds, where you can look down on big beautiful orange fish.
Kroměříž Palace and the castle garden
Kroměříž Castle, or Kroměříž Palace, is a magnificent Baroque castle in the northern part of the city centre. The castle, called "Zámek Kroměříž" or "Arcibiskupský zámek" in Czech, was the former residence of the Archbishops of Kroměříž. Olomouc.
The first residence was founded in 1497 in the late Gothic style. In the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt in Baroque style by a bishop from a powerful Liechtenstein family. After a fire in the 18th century, many of the castle's halls were redecorated.
The building is beautiful on the outside and is said to be richly decorated inside. You can take guided tours of the castle. Unfortunately, we did not have time for it this time, but hope to do it at another time.
Adjacent to the castle is a 58-hectare castle park filled with exotic trees, flower beds, fountains, colonnades and other interesting buildings. The park is also home to a large flock of peacocks, who happily display their beautiful plumage.
More to see and do in Kroměříž
We walked through a part of Kroměříž, and it really is an amazingly beautiful and charming town with houses in bright beautiful colours. If we come here again, we definitely want to take a guided tour of the castle, including the art collections and the "Palace Assembly Hall" that is supposed to be there. We would also like to take the opportunity to hang out in one of the city's many cosy restaurants, bars and cafes.
