Cruise cancellations, bankruptcy - and cooperation in the travel industry

It's time for travel news again! This week we ourselves were affected by a cancelled trip, which we were really looking forward to. But these are the times now. The advice has been tightened in several regions as the infection is increasing. Statistics from Telia show that people are actually travelling less in metropolitan areas now, so we hope that this can help to slow down the spread of infection.

Sharp drop in travelling after stricter advice from authorities

Telia's analysis of movement patterns in the metropolitan regions (Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne) shows that travel decreased almost 15 per cent during Monday to Wednesday last week. Travel decreased within the three regions, but also from the regions. Compared to the same period in 2019, the differences are even greater, with a 30-40 per cent decrease in the number of trips. "This is a significant decrease and points to a clear change in behaviour in a short period of time", says Kristofer Ågren, Head of Business Area Data Analytics at Telia.

Although Tallink Silja has been praised for its work to offer a safe onboard environment during the pandemic, the shipping company now chooses to cancel the first two of four planned Christmas cruises to Visby. This is because the spread of infection in society is currently increasing rapidly and stricter local advice applies in a number of regions until 19 November. The departures that are now cancelled are the first two, 27 November and 4 December. The company is closely monitoring the situation and will return with information regarding the cruises on 11 and 18 December.

SJ reintroduces the conditions for the regular single ticket.

In connection with the ticket release on 4 November for travel from 8 February 2021 onwards, SJ will return to normal purchase conditions for single tickets. The traveller will then be able to choose between a ticket that can be rebooked and a ticket that cannot be rebooked. The surcharge for a rebookable ticket will be reduced at the same time. In order to book a rebookable ticket, the traveller will need to add SEK 20-30 to SJ's day trains.

Norwegian named best low-cost carrier in Europe

Norwegian has been awarded "Europe's Best Low-Cost Airline 2020" by the World Travel Awards - one of the travel industry's finest and most recognised award ceremonies globally. This is the sixth consecutive year that Norwegian has received this prestigious honour. "Despite the incredibly difficult challenges faced by the airline industry this year, Norwegian has shown great strength and continued to provide excellent service," said World Travel Awards CEO Graham E. Cooke.

Solresor has gone bankrupt

The company behind Solresor has gone bankrupt, which means that Solresor's operations have ceased. This can now be read on Solresor's website. The company also writes that there are some interested parties to continue Solresor under new management. Anyone who has a booked package holiday can already get it refunded by the Travel Guarantee Fund in Denmark or wait and see what happens with a possible new ownership of Solresor.

Apollo in new co-operation with Temaresor

As of 5 November 2020, Apollo offers exciting round trips around the world - together with TEMA! The two organisers both have many years of experience in arranging package tours. With the new collaboration, both Apollo and TEMA now focus on being able to take advantage of each other's strengths and deliver quality products to their travellers. From November 2020, TEMA's trips can be booked through Apollo's channels.

Reflection of the week

We were really looking forward to the Christmas cruise to Visby, it seemed so cosy! It is of course the right decision by Tallink Silja to cancel due to the stricter advice, but we hope to be able to cruise to Visby at another time!
