Bacon wrapped dates are a sweet and salty snack that is often a favourite at parties and other festive occasions. These treats have long been a favourite of ours, but I don't think we've ever shared the recipe before. So now it's time, bacon wrapped dates!
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients you need to make bacon-wrapped dates. How many you want to make is up to you. We usually make the whole packet of dates. If you don't use them at the party, they can be eaten cold on another day. In addition to the ingredients below, you will need wooden toothpicks and possibly baking paper.
- Dates
- Half a slice of bacon per date
- Sweet almonds, preferably scalded (as many as dates)
How to make bacon-wrapped dates
- Preheat the oven to 225 degrees.
- If the sweet almonds are not scalded - scald them in hot water and peel off the shell.
- Core the dates (unless you bought seedless dates). We used a crab tool to scoop out the seeds, but you can use any other tool as well.
4. Poke a sweet almond into each date, in the same place where the kernel was previously located.
5. Cut the bacon slices in half and wrap each date in half a slice of bacon.
6. Secure the bacon slice around the date with a toothpick.
7. Place the bacon-wrapped dates on a baking tray, preferably on baking paper if you don't want them to burn. (We happened to have aluminium foil at home, but baking paper is a better and more environmentally friendly alternative).
8. Cook the dates in the oven for about 15 minutes. Make sure the bacon is slightly crispy before taking them out.
9. Serve the bacon-wrapped dates hot or lukewarm. (If you have extra, they are also good cold.)
What are dates?
We conclude with some interesting facts about dates. Dates come from the date palm, which can grow up to 35 metres high and is commonly found in oases in North Africa and elsewhere. The date itself is a berry of which there are around 1500 varieties.
Because dates are a berry, there are plenty of nutrients, but dates are also high in sugar. However, they are still delicious! Do you like dates? Have you ever made bacon-wrapped dates?

Here we have lots of date palms, including along the seafront. Every year "palm hairdressers" come and prune them and remove the dates. Just as well, because they make a lot of mess when they ripen and fall down. People take the opportunity to pick the dates from the ground when whole bunches are taken down by guys in crane lorries.
In this post, you can see what happened this year:

Bacon wrapped dates are very common here. I've never made them myself, but I like to buy pre-wrapped ones in the shop 😀.

Interesting profession to be a palm hairdresser! 😉 Smart to take the opportunity to pick when they fall down, thanks for the link!

I'm probably the only person who doesn't like bacon-wrapped dates with almonds. I have a hard time with mixed sweet and salty flavours. I don't like dates "naturelle" either, far too sweet. I like bacon like that, almonds are ok. Sorry;-)

Very good!
I sometimes cheat and make it a little easier for me by wrapping serrano ham around them, so they don't have to go in the oven. In Spain it has salted almonds, delicious in the date.
Have a nice weekend!
