This year is almost over and it's time to summarise the motorhome and travel year 2020. We can quickly conclude that it has been a very different year, which did not turn out at all as planned. Nevertheless, we had many great experiences!
Table of contents
To compare with the travel year 2019
It is impossible not to glance at last year's post and compare 2020 with Motorhome and travel year 2019. Last year we visited a lot of countries - sometimes a whole bunch of countries in one month. Looking back, we remember fantastic experiences, while of course sometimes being very intense.
What has happened this year is frightening, if you think about people who have fallen ill, lost loved ones or lost their jobs or income. Of course, we have also been affected in different ways (we work partly in the travel industry), but now we thought about only focus on our travel experiences during the year. They may be less exotic than in previous years, but it has also been unexpectedly interesting and exciting to discover Sweden!
January - Stockholm
In January, we hung out at home in Stockholm. Among other things, we took the opportunity to visit Hagaparken in Solna and look around the beautiful Butterfly House Haga Ocean.
February - Tallinn (and museums)
In February we conducted a cruise to Tallinn where we visited the fun experience centre, among other things. Proto discovery workshop. Even back in Stockholm, we went all-in on museums! We visited, among others Strindberg Museum, Photographic Centre museum and Jewish Museum.
March - Museums and natural areas in Stockholm
In March we should have gone to Tunisia. We were soooo excited. Peter is extremely interested in the history of this area and it was really hard to cancel, but in the end we realised we had no choice. We managed two more museums (Maritime history and Ethnographic) before these also closed down. We realised that we needed to get out into nature! We visited Järvafältet nature reserve and Görväln Castle and nature reserves.
April - Natural areas in Stockholm
In April, we got into this with natural areas properly! We realised that we needed to get out of the houseboat from time to time and that the best option was to discover nature in the local area. We visited several places and some we liked were Key Bay Nature Reserve in Nacka, Lida outdoor centre and the adventure trail around Lake Getaren, Bogesund Castle in Vaxholm and the English Park at Rydboholm Castle in Roslagen.
May - Nature experiences and campervan fixes
We also had many nature experiences during May! We also had time to pick up the motorhome from winter storage, put in the new hatches and fix new interior design in the motorhome's garage. Some of the nature and culture experiences from May that we liked included Gustavsberg in Värmdö, Jewish Forest Nature Reserve in Bromma, Lötsjön and Råstasjön in Solna and Sundbyberg and Isbladskärret on Djurgården, where you can see lots of herons.
June - Uppland
During June we really discovered the landscape of Uppland! We visited among other things Kapellskär campsite, Väddö sea baths and camping, and Ängskärs havscamping. We had a very nice experience at the Viking village. Big island and we also had interesting experiences at Lingnåre Cultural Reserve. Uppland offered a lot of history!
July - Göta Canal
We started July with a visit to the beautiful Öregrund in Roslagen, and then we set off on our motorhome trip along the Göta Canal. Fantastic fun, beautiful, interesting and inspiring! We visited, among other things Söderköping, Berg's locks, Vadstena, Varnhem Abbey Church and Läckö Castle. Yes indeed, Sweden was a great success!
August - Trollhätte canal, Dalsland canal and a cruise
During August we travelled along both the Trollhätte Canal and the Dalsland Canal. Some highlights along the first part were Vänersborg, Trollhättan and Bohus Fortress. Some highlights along the second part were the aqueduct in Håverud and Dals Långed. We also made very nice visits to Norrtälje and in Grisslehamn. And so we finally set off on a cruise. A really great month!
September - Poland and the Czech Republic
In September it was time for the first trip abroad in a long time. The corona pandemic was in a quiet phase and we travelled in our own motorhome to Poland and the Czech Republic. Fantastic fun. Some highlights in Poland were baking croissants in Poznan and that canoeing in Wroclaw. Some of the highlights in the Czech Republic were going on a guided tour of the industrial area. Dolni Vitkovice and to visit Stezka Valaska treetop course.
October - moving and labour
In October, there wasn't much travelling at all, except to help with different kinds of work. We took the camper van to Peter's mum's house to help with relocation, proceeded to Peter's brother to help with construction work and struggled with our own failure of the motorhome.
November - Ring island
In November we spent a autumn weekend with our friends on Ringsö, where we tried, among other things, to Fishing with nets in Lake Mälaren. Apart from this, we were mostly at home working!
December - Nobel Week Lights and food experiences
One of the few things we've done in December is that we visited Nobel Week Lights in Stockholm. Otherwise, we have been working and thinking about creating good (and healthy) food experiences.
How was your travel year 2020?
Elisabeth says:
You have managed to do a lot, despite Corona! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Helena says:
Yes, now it still feels like we have managed a lot, even if it was different than planned. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Daniela | Discovering+The+Planet says:
There have still been a lot of great experiences. It is of course not quite the same thing to experience Sweden as a new country. But one must still be grateful that we have so much endless and beautiful nature. Merry Christmas to you friends
22 December 2020 - 9:01
Helena says:
Yes, it has been nice to be able to get out into nature, when you could not travel in any other way. Wishing you a nice Christmas!
22 December 2020 - 12:37
Johnny Friskilä says:
Yes, your year has been different, of course. But you stay afloat, alive and above ground - that's the most important thing. And you manage to get around anyway; you were also smart to leave in September when things were actually looking a bit brighter. I did that too, to Croatia, and I really don't regret it.
Let's see what 2021 brings. Whether it will be the vaccine that restores most things, or whether it will be the virus that mutates and borders close completely, as now with the UK. Exciting!
22 December 2020 - 9:01
Helena says:
Yes, you have to orientate yourself somehow in the new situation. For you it was a real change, but you have also found a way to relate! And of course it was nice to travel in September, it was easier to be home later.

Ama de casa says:
You have really achieved a lot and the fantastic pictures are really an excellent advertisement for Sweden!
Our travel year has also been different from what we imagined when we toasted 2020. But we managed a cruise in the Caribbean before the misery broke out and we ended up in seven weeks of quarantine. After midsummer, we have been able to move a little locally here in Spain. During the summer and autumn, there have been 8 mini trips (about 1 week) and 2 micro trips (1 night). In the places we have visited, it has not been a bit difficult to keep our distance, we have kind of gone "against the flow" when it comes to other tourists. Now we are limited to moving only within the Valencia region, but it is really soooo much better than being limited to the apartment, so we are not complaining. Not very much anyway 😉.
We sincerely hope for a freer and above all healthier 2021!

Helena says:
Glad you liked our pictures! 🙂 The summer in Sweden was really nice! For you, there have been major restrictions, but nice that you still got away on mini trips. And yes, the region is much better than the apartment 🙂 .

Different, yes. But you have actually travelled abroad twice, not bad this year.
I am completely satisfied with the summer. But not being able to travel at all now during Oct-Dec it has felt boring and different.
22 December 2020 - 10:49
Helena says:
Absolutely true! Yes, we found that we still visited three countries, and it did not feel so bad for 2020, so to speak. Have exactly the same experience of a nice summer, but that it has been a bit boring now in late autumn.

It's amazing what you can do. And can do. Despite the pandemic, we have had a great motorhome year with only one "trip abroad". Bornholm is geographically an extension of Skåne, so it is not particularly exotic. But wonderful with Danish "hygge", smokehouses and a cosy little beer festival on the beach in Aarsdale! Otherwise, we have mostly travelled around here at home and found small gems like Odensvi near Gamleby, Lilla Kalvö far out among the östgötaskären and Odensåker in Västergötland. We have been to several wonderful spas, discovered mines and art in Dalarna. The lunch at Kulinariet in St Skedvi was the best we ever had. Avesta Art absolutely fantastic art experience.
We have been to Öland, wild camping at the bird lake Tåkern several times. Travelled with friends to Eckerö (oh, another "foreign trip"). We've been to lovely archipelago restaurants in our home country, visited family and friends in Värmland, socialised remotely with motorhome friends in several places. Not to forget: meeting cousins that I (Arne) have not seen since I was a child. Everything is on our blog:
http://xoeocholivia.blogspot.se
So it hasn't been a crap year, after all. But now we wish you
A BETTER NEW YEAR!
Arne & Benita in Norrköping.

We really want to visit Bornholm, it seems cosy and interesting! Nice that you have also been able to discover pearls in the local area! And how special to meet cousins that you have not met since you were a child! We also wish you a really nice 2021!!!

It has certainly been a different kind of travelling year. I realised that when we wrote our summary. We finally got to explore more places in our neighbourhood, something we had been planning for years. Nevertheless, it has been a good year until the last few months when the darkness descended, the infection increased and there were no opportunities to "escape" to some exotic environment for a few weeks. Now we are looking forward to a good 2021 and a hopefully effective vaccine....
22 December 2020 - 17:10
Helena says:
This exploring the local area has not been so bad, we have appreciated it after all! The bad thing is of course ill health and financial problems, so now we really hope for the vaccine!!!
22 December 2020 - 21:11
BP says:
A different travel year, indeed! But you made the best of the situation. You probably wouldn't have discovered all the goodies in Sweden if you had travelled abroad. Nothing bad that doesn't have some good with it.
22 December 2020 - 17:24
Helena says:
It's a bit like that. I don't think we would have discovered all this in Sweden otherwise, at least not now. This is actually positive. But then there is so much other misery in the wake of the pandemic, so you really hope it turns around!!!!
22 December 2020 - 21:12
Veiken says:
You can see when you summarise that you do a lot in a year. You have really looked around and discovered Sweden, which is fantastic in many ways.
We had three months in Thailand before the corona struck We should have been on a cruise, which froze. We have not learned much from it, but have booked a new one at the end of summer 2021. The most important thing is not to travel, but to feel as good as possible. Many, many people have had a hard time during the pandemic, so who am I to complain?
Take care and Merry Christmas!
22 December 2020 - 18:21
Helena says:
But of course, there are so many people who have been hit harder by the pandemic. The most important thing in the long run is not a single trip but the health and well-being of the country in general. Anyway, hope you get away on the next cruise! It's so nice to look forward to something! Wishing you a really nice Christmas !!!

Husis blog says:
As you and many of you summarise the 2020 travel year, many of you have still managed to do a lot of travelling, even if it may have been different from what you originally thought.
We motorhomes are still pretty good for travelling around in a year like this.
Now the owners and many other homosapiens are hoping that the vaccine will start to arrive and that it will be possible to vaccinate everyone quickly.
All good
22 December 2020 - 20:09
Helena says:
Absolutely true! We have been so happy with the motorhome this year! It is thanks to them that it felt relatively right to travel in Sweden, and also in Europe in September. Very grateful! and yes, now we keep our fingers crossed for the vaccine!

You have seen more of Sweden and the area around and in Stockholm and that is positive in itself. There's a lot here - but it's nice to have a couple of trips abroad as well.
We were in Spain in January and February. And in the end of February I was in Vemdalen and went skiing and that was before the pandemic took hold of us. Later there were a couple of trips over to Åland but not with disembarkation. We had some nice days in August at the lovely Högbo Bruk and in Färnebofjärden. Otherwise, a lot of Stockholm with surroundings and some archipelago. I am so happy to live where we live. In the centre of town but still with nature and the water close by. And of course we miss travelling. I am still happy about all the trips we have made in the past and hope that 2021 will be a good year.

Lena - good for the soul says:
After all, there was a lot of travelling and adventure, albeit a bit different, for you.
Even for us, there was a certain amount of travelling. We usually go to Germany twice a year. Those trips were cancelled. It was just in time to be allowed to move further than two hours away for midsummer so we managed to get away on the annual trip to Idrefjäll. And then a road trip to Värmland. Of course, the autumn's booked safari trip had to be cancelled. Now we are rebooking it for next autumn instead. Let's see if we get away!
