Nature experiences in Malta and Gozo
We have visited Malta three times over the years and it is a country that has pleasantly surprised us in many ways. When it comes to nature, we think Malta has a lot to offer, although of course you shouldn't expect large forests or deep lakes. Malta is a mountainous and relatively bare island in the middle of the Mediterranean, and in the summer it can get very dry and hot.
If you are looking for nature in Malta and Gozo, you may want to avoid summer. Finding nature can also often require travelling outside the cities. One tip is to visit the island Gozo, which can be perceived as greener and more rural than the main island.
12 nature experiences in Malta and Gozo
Here are 12 fantastic nature experiences in Malta and Gozo that we can recommend. Almost all are based on our own experiences and travels in the country.
1. swimming from rocks
Malta's coastline is full of cliffs and rocky coves. In some places it has become almost like little rocky 'bathtubs' where you can slip down. In other places there are ladders or ramps. Beautiful and sometimes a bit nice to get away from all the sand.
2. Sunbathing and swimming on sandy beaches
Although Malta's coastline is mostly rock and stone, there are some sandy beaches. The finest we've seen is Rambla Bay on Gozo, but there are also some popular sandy beaches on the main island of Malta.
3. Take a boat trip to the island of Comino
Comino is the smallest of the three inhabited islands in the island nation of Malta. However, only a handful of people live here, and there is supposed to be a small hotel. If you want, you can take a boat trip here and experience the blue lagoon here, which is famous for its cyan-coloured water. The photo is from our first trip to Malta, 2008.
4. Mountain biking in Gozo
A great way to discover the natural beauty of Malta is to go mountain biking in Gozo. You can join guided tours, which take you to all the most beautiful places on the island, along the coast and past small villages.
5. Try rock climbing in Gozo
In Gozo, there are rock walls that are perfect for trying out climbing. We went on a tour with the company Gozo Adventures and tried a type of climbing called "Abseiling". Really fun and exciting to try!
6. Canoeing in Gozo
We had originally planned to go canoeing when we visited Gozo in 2017, but we ended up mountain biking instead. However, paddling on the clear water is very popular, and you can book guided canoe and kayak tours.
7. Dive in the clear water
Some of the best nature experiences in Malta can be had underwater. The water is clear and there is a lot to see. As well as nature under the surface, there are plenty of rocks and even various wrecks to discover.
8. Ride a segway in the countryside
A different and exciting way to get around and be guided is to take a segway tour. Some people do this in the centre Vallettawhich is certainly interesting but also quite hectic. We instead took a segway tour in Dingli, located on the western coast of Malta.
9. Visit farms in the countryside
One way to enjoy nature while experiencing authentic Maltese culture is to visit rural farms in Malta or Gozo. These include beekeepers producing honey, goat farmers making cheese and farms growing olives and tomatoes.
10. Relax in a spa hotel in nature
If you want to enjoy both nature and comfort, you can stay in a spa hotel in the countryside. We stayed for a few nights at the Ta' Cenc hotel, which is situated in a scenic location on the island of Gozo. Here you can enjoy both outdoor and indoor pools, good food, a spa and walks in the beautiful surroundings.
11. See dramatic cliffs
Malta's coastline is dramatic, and if you're a fan of towering cliffs and stunning views, you'll get your fill here. However, perhaps the most famous cliff, Azure Window, collapsed on 8 March 2017, so if you want to see it, you have to dive. Our photo of it (below, top left) is from 2016.
12. Discover exciting caves
Last but not least, there are some exciting caves in Malta and Gozo. These include Blue Grotto, Calypso's Cave, Ninu's Cave and Xerri's Grotto. We haven't visited these particular caves and instead offer a photo from a cave with a prehistoric temple, which we visited in Gozo.
More nature experiences in Malta and Gozo
Of course, there are even more ways to experience nature in Malta and Gozo. You can go hiking and take various excursions by horse, quad bike or boat. Of course, you can also try different water activities, such as stand-up paddle boarding. Read more about Malta below.

Nice post about Malta and Gozo and there is certainly a lot to do here. During my youth (long ago) I spent a lot of time in Malta, mostly in Gozo, but I travelled around a lot and that was between 1966 and the mid 70s. And then in the 80s and 90s I travelled there again.
We did a lot of diving and snorkelling, canoeing and there was also a lot of sailing in the waters around here and windsurfing. We also liked Comino very much. Great pictures.
