Filmstaden Råsunda

Filmstaden Råsunda is like its own little neighbourhood with its beautiful listed buildings. When we lived in Sundbyberg we were sometimes here at the cinema. Now we stopped during one of our bike rides, and took the opportunity to check out the exhibition on the 100-year history of the Film City. Unexpectedly interesting!

100 years of Swedish film history

Last year, 2020, Filmstaden celebrated the 100th anniversary of its opening. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, perhaps the world's most modern film studio was built. This is where Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller made their classic silent films, and where Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman played starring roles that took them all the way to Hollywood.

Filmstaden Råsunda

During this period, more than 400 films were made in the Filmstaden studios, by and with Ingmar Bergman, Sickan Carlsson, Hasse and Tage and many, many more. They often used backdrops to make it look like they were somewhere else in the world. When shooting the film Intermezzo In 1936 (with Ingrid Bergman and Gösta Ekman), for example, a scene was to be shot in Tyrol - but a set in Råsunda was of course cheaper.

By the end of the 1960s, times had changed and the Swedish Film Industry began to leave Råsunda, but for a few more decades many great films were shot. In the 1970s, films such as The emigrants and Pippi Longstocking on the seven seas a huge audience.

Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Ingmar Bergman

Many huge stars have passed through Filmstaden Råsunda in Solna. How about Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Ingmar Bergman? The young extra Greta Gustafsson was certainly happy when she finally got a major role in Selma Lagerlöf's film in the 1920s. The Saga of Gösta Berling.

A few years later, she followed directors Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström to Hollywood and took the stage name Garbo. And the rest, as they say, is history. Today there is a road in the area, named after the great star.

Greta Garbos väg

Ingrid Bergman made her debut in Munkbrogreven 1934 and two years later she made her breakthrough in the Intermezzo against Gösta Ekman. She later became one of the world's biggest film stars and won three Oscars.

In 1945, Ingmar Bergman directed his first film. Kris. He went on to make classic films such as Summer night smile, The seventh seal, Whispers and shouts and Fanny and Alexander.

Backstugan, Regissörsvillan and Portvaktsstugan's waffle cafe

Backstugan is a special and beautiful house in the Filmstaden area, where you could come to enjoy classic, well-prepared meals. Right now it is closed due to the pandemic, and since it is also under new ownership, the future seems to be a bit unclear.

The director's villa, located at the prestigious address Ingmar Bergmans torg 1, still serves as a restaurant and conference and party venue. Here you will be able to eat Norrland tapas, with lots of goodies such as Västerbotten cheese pie, gravad fjällröding and moose meatballs. Portvaktarstugan will also have a cosy 1920s-style café.

Filmstaden Råsunda - exciting film history!

What an exciting film history we have in Sweden. What film stars and what films! When we went here, we thought that it's a bit of a shame that there aren't more films on display. Why not a big, modern, interactive film museum? That would be cool, wouldn't it?

1920s

  • 1919-1920: Råsunda Film City was built on the site of a former ostrich farm (plumes in hats were fashionable at the time). The architect was Ebbe Crone, who used a 1920s classicist building style. The building contractor was Kreuger & Toll. On Ivar Kreuger's advice, AB Svensk Filmindustri was formed through a merger between Svenska Bio and Skandia in Stocksund.
  • Autumn 1919: Even before the facility was completed, the first film was shot, 'The Driver' by Victor Sjöström.

  • 1929: The first Swedish sound film, "Säg det i toner" with Elisabet Frisk and Håkan Westergren was recorded in Filmstaden.

1930s

  • 1930s: The talkies were a big hit. Times were tough in Sweden, and people appreciated light-hearted uplifting entertainment such as so-called 'Pilsner films'. Actors during this period included Tutta Rolf, Sickan Carlsson, Nils Poppe, Thor Modéen and Anna-Lisa Ericson.
  • 1934: Ingrid Bergman made her debut in 'Munkbrogreven'.
  • 1936: Ingrid Bergman's breakthrough came in 'Intermezzo' against Gösta Ekman.
