Filmstaden Råsunda now serves as a cinema, although it is currently closed due to the pandemic. This used to be Sweden's Hollywood. Over 400 films were shot here, and the ground was trodden by celebrities such as Ingmar Bergman, Ingrid Bergman and Greta Garbo.

Filmstaden Råsunda
Filmstaden Råsunda is like its own little neighbourhood with its beautiful listed buildings. When we lived in Sundbyberg we were sometimes here at the cinema. Now we stopped during one of our bike rides, and took the opportunity to check out the exhibition on the 100-year history of the Film City. Unexpectedly interesting!

Filmstaden Råsunda is located in the area of Råsunda in Solna municipality, close to the border with Sundbyberg and just north of Stockholm. Råsunda is a very nice area with many beautiful and charming houses.

100 years of Swedish film history
Last year, 2020, Filmstaden celebrated the 100th anniversary of its opening. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, perhaps the world's most modern film studio was built. This is where Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller made their classic silent films, and where Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman played starring roles that took them all the way to Hollywood.

During this period, more than 400 films were made in the Filmstaden studios, by and with Ingmar Bergman, Sickan Carlsson, Hasse and Tage and many, many more. They often used backdrops to make it look like they were somewhere else in the world. When shooting the film Intermezzo In 1936 (with Ingrid Bergman and Gösta Ekman), for example, a scene was to be shot in Tyrol - but a set in Råsunda was of course cheaper.
By the end of the 1960s, times had changed and the Swedish Film Industry began to leave Råsunda, but for a few more decades many great films were shot. In the 1970s, films such as The emigrants and Pippi Longstocking on the seven seas a huge audience.

Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Ingmar Bergman
Many huge stars have passed through Filmstaden Råsunda in Solna. How about Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Ingmar Bergman? The young extra Greta Gustafsson was certainly happy when she finally got a major role in Selma Lagerlöf's film in the 1920s. The Saga of Gösta Berling.
A few years later, she followed directors Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström to Hollywood and took the stage name Garbo. And the rest, as they say, is history. Today there is a road in the area, named after the great star.

Ingrid Bergman made her debut in Munkbrogreven 1934 and two years later she made her breakthrough in the Intermezzo against Gösta Ekman. She later became one of the world's biggest film stars and won three Oscars.
In 1945, Ingmar Bergman directed his first film. Kris. He went on to make classic films such as Summer night smile, The seventh seal, Whispers and shouts and Fanny and Alexander.

Backstugan, Regissörsvillan and Portvaktsstugan's waffle cafe
Backstugan is a special and beautiful house in the Filmstaden area, where you could come to enjoy classic, well-prepared meals. Right now it is closed due to the pandemic, and since it is also under new ownership, the future seems to be a bit unclear.

The director's villa, located at the prestigious address Ingmar Bergmans torg 1, still serves as a restaurant and conference and party venue. Here you will be able to eat Norrland tapas, with lots of goodies such as Västerbotten cheese pie, gravad fjällröding and moose meatballs. Portvaktarstugan will also have a cosy 1920s-style café.

Filmstaden Råsunda - exciting film history!
What an exciting film history we have in Sweden. What film stars and what films! When we went here, we thought that it's a bit of a shame that there aren't more films on display. Why not a big, modern, interactive film museum? That would be cool, wouldn't it?

The history of Filmstaden Råsunda
- Early 20th century: Svenska Bio and Charles Magnusson brought international film expertise to Sweden.
- 1912: Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström were hired as directors.
- 1917: Victor Sjöström's film 'Terje Vigen' premiered. The film was a great international success and ushered in a period when Sweden became a world leader in film.
1920s
- 1919-1920: The film city of Råsunda was built on land where there had previously been an ostrich farm (it was fashionable at the time to wear plumes in hats). The architect was Ebbe Crone, who used a 1920s classicist building style. The building contractor was Kreuger & Toll. On Ivar Kreuger's advice, AB Svensk Filmindustri was formed through a merger between Svenska Bio and Skandia in Stocksund.
- Autumn 1919: Even before the facility was completed, the first film was shot, 'The Driver' by Victor Sjöström.
- 1920s: Young extra Greta Gustafsson finally got a major role in 'Gösta Berling's Saga', written by Selma Lagerlöf.
- 1929: The first Swedish sound film, "Säg det i toner" with Elisabet Frisk and Håkan Westergren was recorded in Filmstaden.
1930s
- 1930s: The talkies were a big hit. Times were tough in Sweden, and people appreciated light-hearted uplifting entertainment such as so-called 'Pilsner films'. Actors during this period included Tutta Rolf, Sickan Carlsson, Nils Poppe, Thor Modéen and Anna-Lisa Ericson.
- 1934: Ingrid Bergman made her debut in 'Munkbrogreven'.
- 1936: Ingrid Bergman's breakthrough came in 'Intermezzo' against Gösta Ekman.
1940s
- 1940s: Ingmar Bergman made his debut. Other names from this period include Hasse Ekman, Gustaf Molander and Alf Sjöberg.
- 1944: The hit film "Hets" was released, directed by Alf Sjöberg from a script by a young Ingmar Bergman.
- 1945: Bergman directed his first film 'Kris', which has since been condemned as a disaster. He misbehaved and was fired from Filmstaden Råsunda, but after the success of 'Music in the Dark' he was welcomed back.
1950s and 1960s
- 1950s: Ingmar Bergman had many successes with films such as 'Summer with Monika', 'The Smile of the Summer Night', 'The Strawberry Patch' and 'The Seventh Seal'.
- 1954: The first colour film was shot in Råsunda. Gustaf Molander (who has directed over 50 films in Filmstaden Råsunda!) adapted "Herr Arnes penningar".
- 1960s: New technologies and influences came along, and directors wanted to film in real environments. The studios were no longer suitable, and they were increasingly disturbed by increased traffic, buildings and aeroplanes.
- 1969: Svensk Filmindustri left Filmstaden and moved to smaller premises in Stocksund. Activities were greatly reduced, but films were still made.
Modern history
- 1970s: Major films during this period were 'The Emigrants' and 'Pippi Longstocking on the Seven Seas', which were partly filmed in the Filmstaden Råsunda. The National Stage School and Riksteatern used the premises for theatre.
- 1990s: Skanska bought the land to build housing, but the economic crisis put a stop to it. Meanwhile, the association 'Bevara gamla Filmstaden' worked to save the area. Production companies rented the premises and films were made again, such as 'The Glassblower's Child', 'Veranda for a Tenor', 'Bert - the Last Virgin' and the TV series 'The Archipelago Doctor'.
- 1999: The final films were produced at Filmstaden Råsunda. These were the children's film 'A Little Christmas Story' and 'Happy End'.
- 2001: The cinema opened.
- 2002: Since 2002, the Filmstaden Culture Foundation has been working to bring the film heritage of Filmstaden to life.

We knew about Filmstaden, but were fascinated by how much film history there is there! Interesting exhibition, but I think the place would be worth highlighting even more in some way.

I have to admit that we just strolled around the beautiful area, but never peeked into the buildings, not even the restaurant/café. Lovely pictures by the way. A blue sky is the best background in the world, right?

Oh, this is my childhood. My mother was a tour manager at Riksteatern when they had their home port with rehearsal rooms, staff canteen, studios and carpentry here in the 70s. I sat there and was fascinated by everything that was made and the smells of wood, costumes and fun electronics.
Greta Garbo and my grandmother lived on the same farm in Söder as children and hunted rats for the caretaker. Got paid "per tail".
