Nynäs Castle

Nynäs Castle is a great place to visit, whether you like nature or culture. In the summer, you can see the inside of the castle, and the shop and restaurant are also open. So here, on a snowy April day, it was a different kind of visit.

Nynäs Castle is located at Rundbosjön between Trosa and Nyköping, and belongs to Nyköping municipality.

April weather - waking up to snow

Talk about April weather! When we arrived at the site in Nyköping one day it was sunny and warm. The ducks were resting lazily in the heat and people were even walking around in T-shirts.

When we woke up the next morning it was a snowstorm. We paid for a few extra hours at the car park and stayed until lunch. Then it calmed down, and we decided to go to Nynäs Castle.

Snöoväder

Although the snow stopped falling, there was still snow on the ground. We were not the only ones surprised by the weather. The flowers at Nynäs Castle also seemed slightly shocked.

The sheep looked wonderingly at us when we arrived. We were the only visitors on this snowy afternoon.

History of Nynäs Castle - Grip, Gyllenstierna, Gripenstedt ...

The Nynäs estate dates back to the 14th century, and one of the first owners was the powerful Bo Jonsson Grip. The estate remained in the Grip family until the Gyllenstierna family acquired it by marriage in the 16th century.

The current main building was built in the mid/late 17th century. In the 18th century it was sold to the Hildebrand family and then to the Bonde and Anckarsvärd families.

In 1856, Johan August Anckarsvärd transferred the castle to his son-in-law and minister Johan August Gripenstedt. Gripenstedt invested in new buildings, including the orangery, but the construction was expensive and he sold the castle to his brother. In the 1960s the property, apart from the main building, was sold to Södermanland County Council, and in the 1980s the main building was also sold.

Visiting Nynäs Castle

During the summer months, Nynäs is a living castle with guided tours, a restaurant, a garden shop and various activities for both children and adults.

During our visit, the castle was a bit like a winter wonderland, but you could follow all the signs with red pennants telling about the people who lived and worked here. The signs tell us about the lords, but also about the inspector and the agricultural workers, housewives, millers, coachmen and all the others.

The Orangery

The orangery was built in 1905-1907 and was very modern at the time. Today there is a restaurant in the orangery with a focus on organic and local produce.

In one wing, there will also be a garden shop with a slightly different range of plants, seeds and garden ornaments. The restaurant and shop are open in the summer, so it was closed when we visited.

Castle Park

The castle park is open to visitors all year round, although it was a rather snowy experience just now. For many centuries, the park has featured everything from useful plants and fruit trees to fountains and sculptures.

Nynäs nature reserve

Nynäs Nature Reserve was established in 1971 and is one of the largest in Sörmland, with over 3000 hectares to discover. There are many hiking trails, and you can also cycle on signposted trails. Cycling routes include Näckrosleden and Sverigeleden. For hiking, several stages of the Sörmlandsleden trail pass by, and you will also find various shorter loops:

  • Walk along Lövnäsudden at Sandviksbadet (about 1 km).
  • Röstensleden (approx. 1.5 km)
  • Trail around Furholmen (about 2.5 km), connecting to the bird tower at Trobbofjärden and the remains of WWII seaplane hiding places.

Did we walk any of the loops? No, we did not. Still overwhelmed by the snow and the sudden cold, we were content to look around the immediate area.

Staying at Nynäs Castle

At Nynäs Castle you will find the Bränneriet hostel and cottages for rent. We must say that it looked very charming here, with a sauna and jetty. At Sandviksbadet there is also a campsite.

For us it was a short, but still nice, visit on this snowy afternoon in April. We would definitely consider visiting the castle again, under different conditions.
