What to do in the summer heat? When temperatures approach 30 degrees centigrade (or rise above it), at least we are affected. We can't even do half as much as usual. But what can can you even do in the heat? Here are our top tips for things to do when it's (extremely) hot ...
Table of contents
1. lounging in the shade
It's nice to be outdoors, and if it's too hot you can relax in the shade. Perhaps you can read a book or magazine, listen to a podcast or audiobook, or maybe just ... relax.
2. bada
Bathing is of course a perfect activity when the weather is warm. Maybe it's time for a refreshing swim or some water play. Snorkelling can also be exciting at times, depending on where you are.
3. Drink lots of water
If you want to do anything in the heat, you need to drink a lot of water. We often take a water bottle in our bag. Otherwise, you have to shop on the road ... or maybe find a fountain with drinking water.
4. eat ice cream
Ice cream is good in the heat! Even if you sometimes feel like you can barely eat, an ice cream can often slip down without any problems. In addition to being delicious, it is also cooling.
5. Feasting on fruit
It is also ideal to eat lots of fruit. Fruit contains vitamins and sugars, but also fluids, which allows for good recovery. In summer we like melon, pears and strawberries, among others.
6. serve light summer food
When it's really hot, it can be nice to eat cold food. After all, serving food cold also avoids the mess and heat from the stove. We like things like air-dried ham, salami, cold or hot smoked salmon, feta cheese, tasty sauces, baguette, olives, avocado and tomatoes. Serve as a pick or mix together to make a great salad!
7. Organise a picnic in the shade
Why eat inside when you can eat outside? Putting together a picnic and sitting in the shade of the grass, or on a pier, becomes a cosy summer activity.
8. Go for an early morning walk
It's good to move around, even when it's hot. If you want to go for a walk, it's best to do it early in the morning, before it gets too hot.
9. go on a boat trip
When it's hot outside, it's great to be at sea! At sea, the winds often help to freshen things up. Book a cruise on a large or small ship, go on a sightseeing tour or take a boat trip to a nearby island.
10. kayaking
Another cosy activity in the summer heat is kayaking. If it's really hot, you can alternate with a swim from time to time. The water is close by!
11. Try different water sports
Hot summer days are also perfect for trying different water sports. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), for example, is extremely popular. This year we've also seen a lot of electric 'flying surfboards' (image google foilboard!).
12. Hang out in air-conditioned indoor centres
Have you simply had enough of the heat? Then look for an air-conditioned indoor centre. Here you can spend hours shopping, drinking and doing other activities without being bothered by the summer heat.
13. Visit a church
Another perfect activity for those who want a respite from the heat is to visit a church. Have you thought about how cool it can be? The picture below is from the crypt of the cathedral in Lund. It's cool and cosy here!
14. go to a museum
Another tip is to go to a museum. Museum rooms are usually cool and comfortable, and you can concentrate on the exhibits without being bothered by the heat. The picture below is from the Grenna museum in Gränna, where you can get involved in the story of the Andrée expedition to the North Pole in 1897. A particularly chilling experience!
15. Postpone big projects to another day
Last but not least, do you have a big project coming up? Take a break until the temperature drops a few degrees. This will make it easier to get back to work!

Agree with all the tips! Would like to add that you should also add fluid replacement so you also get salt.

Great tips for wonderful summer weather! We almost wonder if we are really stupid? This, the hottest week of the summer, we have played four good rounds of golf (with almost no shade), trotted up over 400 steps to Art on High and finally a good bike ride one afternoon.

Wow, impressed indeed! How do you cope? We get completely exhausted when it's at its hottest 😉.

Great tips, everyone! Here with me it is 36 degrees now and I prefer to stay indoors, here it is better than outdoors. Take a cold shower and cool down your body. Lie down on a cool stone floor. Travelling far in an air-conditioned car is also nice!

It's hot ...! Nice then to have cooler indoors! We have almost warmer indoors sometimes actually ... We may have to find somewhere to go far so we can have the AC on in the motorhome 😉.

I thought about it the other day when I visited Täby Centre. It was 33 degrees in the sun. In the parking garage it was not much cooler, but once up in the centre it was 18 degrees. They boast about that - a pleasant 18 degrees all year round. Didn't feel stupid at all;-)

Many nice tips 🙂 However, I try to avoid air conditioning because there is often too much temperature difference between outdoors and indoors - at least abroad I often get sick from it. But shade is great, and swimming, and ice cream. I prefer late evening walks around sunset to getting up early 😉.
