Landskrona
Landskrona may be a relatively small and quiet town today, but throughout history it has had big plans and has also seen a lot of drama during the periods when Sweden and Denmark were at constant war.
For us, Landskrona became a new and pleasant acquaintance. We travelled here by motorhome and had the opportunity to discover the city and its surroundings during some nice late summer days.
Landskrona is located on the Öresund in western Skåne, between Helsingborg and Malmö.
What can you do in Landskrona?
So what can you see and do in Landskrona? We can confirm that there is a lot to discover. We have collected our best tips here in a list.
1. visit Landskrona museum
Landskrona Museum is located in the centre of the city and it might be a good idea to start your visit to Landskrona here. This is not only a museum but also a so-called "InfoPoint", where you can find maps and brochures about the city. There is no tourist office in Landskrona, so you have to rely on this type of information centre.
The museum also offers several fine and interesting exhibitions. Here you can see the exhibitions "People like us" which tells about Stone Age people, "Landskrona 1413" which is about the time when the city got its city privileges and "A city of work" which takes you to the time when Landskrona was a distinctly industrial city. The museum is free to visit and there is also a play exhibition for children.
2. Discover Landskrona on foot
It is interesting to walk, or possibly cycle, around Landskrona. In addition to the most important sights, such as the castle and the church, there are also other fine and interesting buildings. For example, you can check out the Landskrona Theatre from 1901, the beautiful Tyghuset on Kasernplan and Landskrona Town Hall from 1882-1884.
3. Check out the Sofia Albertina Church
Sofia Albertina Church is located in the centre of Landskrona. Designed by architect Carl Hårleman and completed in 1788, the church was named after Gustav III's sister Sofia Albertina.
The church is powerful on the outside, but also beautiful on the inside. There are some old-fashioned fixtures and fittings. The oldest is perhaps the baptismal font from the 12th century, which served as a fountain in a private family's garden before anyone realised what it was. The chandeliers are from the former church and were made in the 17th century.
4. Take a guided tour of Landskrona Castle
If you were to choose just one thing to do in Landskrona, we would recommend a visit to Landskrona Castle, or Landskrona Citadel as it is also known. The castle is a well-preserved fortress from 1559, which is surrounded by double moats. If you have the opportunity, join a guided tour - it brings even more life to the interesting buildings.
We were accompanied by a guide who told us about life at the castle over the years. Among other things, we heard about the wild party night when Tycho Brahe brought his domesticated moose to the castle for a party, which happened to be overly refreshed and broke its leg on the stairs. We also visited the dungeon, which in the past had only one entrance, namely a hole in the roof where people were thrown down if they got tired of them for various reasons.
We also got to go inside the prison tower. When the castle could no longer be used as a fortress, it was converted into a prison, and for a time it served as a women's prison. Perhaps the most famous of the female prisoners was the angel maker Hilda Nilsson, who was convicted of seven infanticide and one manslaughter in 1917. In the tower you can peek into the cell where she finally took her own life.
Right next to the castle is Konditori Citadellet, where we stopped for a tasty prawn sandwich. There are also simple meals and snacks.
Here you can also watch a film from Landskrona Castle.
5. Take a look at the Rothoff Colony Museum
In the area around Landskrona castle there are lots of cute little allotment houses with allotment gardens. There are so many that we first thought that "every second Landskrona resident must have an allotment garden". That's not true, but according to a brochure from Landskrona Museum, the city is the most allotment-rich in the country, with every 27th resident having their own allotment. The gardens are located in a lush environment, and it is really nice to walk among all the greenery and flowers.
The area also houses Sweden's only colony museum. The Rothoff colony was built in 1903 and is one of the oldest preserved cottages in the area. It now serves as an exhibition space, with a cottage decorated as it was in the early 1900s and a small exhibition about the history of the colony and the Rothoff family, who once owned the cottage.
6. See art in Landskrona konsthall
Not far from the castle is the Landskrona konsthall. The hall was designed in 1963 for the city's 500th anniversary, by architects Sten Samuelsson and Fritz Jaeneckae. It hosts various exhibitions, mainly in art, design and photography. In the park outside is a sculpture park with works by 19 different artists.
7. Sunbathing and swimming
Weather permitting, you can enjoy the sun and swimming in Landskrona. In the centre of town, near the castle, you'll find the Halvmånen/Lagunen sea baths. There are also bathing areas in Borstahusen, on Ven and at Ålabodarna.
8. Take a boat trip to Ven
One thing you won't want to miss doing in Landskrona is taking a boat trip to the beautiful island of Ven. The journey by ferry takes about 30 minutes and on Ven you will find a lovely landscape with great cycle paths.
Here you can visit the Tycho Brahe Museum, which tells the story of the successful scientist and astronomer who spent many years building outstanding observatories here. You can also familiarise yourself with alpacas or try some of the island's delicacies, such as Hven ice cream, honey or whiskey from Spirit of Hven.
9. Hanging out at Borstahusen
Borstahusen is located by the sea in the northwestern part of Landskrona, and is originally a fishing village from the 1770s. The fishing village was founded by the brothers Rasmus Andersson Borste and Jöns Andersson Borste, who also gave the neighbourhood its name. Today this is a cosy area with charming houses, beaches, restaurants, camping and golf. Normally you can also visit the Swedish Golf Museum here, although it was currently closed for repairs.
The harbour is also home to the Pumphuset cultural centre with an art gallery, museum and restaurant.
10. Experience nature in the valleys of Hilleshög!
About seven kilometres north of central Landskrona, right next to Glumslöv's slopes, is the Hilleshögs dalar nature reserve. We parked the motorhome by the road, where there are a number of parking spaces, and walked towards the sea. The walking path goes through lush green nature, and at the side a large herd of white cows roamed.
Down by the sea you can experience the nature that the area is perhaps best known for, namely high sandy cliffs (Sandbergen). Here and there you can also see traces of the defence system built by Charles XII in the early 1700s to prevent attacks from Denmark. If you want, you can walk the 3.2 km long Sandbergen trail (brown) that takes you around large parts of the reserve.
11. Take an excursion to Ålabodarna.
Just north of Hilleshög's valleys you will find Ålabodarna and Ålabodarnas harbour. The first thing we found here, after parking the motorhome, was the Örenäsgånggriften or "Graven vid havet", which is one of Skåne's best preserved gånggriften. This type of megalithic tomb was built sometime during the period 3600 - 3200 BC. A bit dizzying, isn't it?
You can then continue down to Ålabodarnas harbour. The harbour is 150 years old, and Ålabodarnas village is even older. Today there are guest berths for boats, jetties, a restaurant and an ice cream parlour.
12. Hiking along Skåneleden
Another thing to do in Landskrona and Skåne is to hike. Skåneleden. Skåneleden is a 130 mile long hiking trail that is divided into 6 sub-trails and 117 stages. At Landskrona, the sub-trail SL5 crosses Öresund.

If you're travelling by motorhome, you can stay at the large site in Lundåkrahamnen, within easy cycling distance of the city centre. There are a large number of pitches with a nice view of the water and good service in the form of electricity, toilets, showers and the possibility of emptying and filling tanks. There are also ice cream and other simple refreshments nearby. When you find a free spot, you pay in a vending machine. When we were here, the price was 200 SEK/day (2021).

What a strange but interesting city. Thinking mainly of the (blissful) mix of architectural styles. They don't go together but if you want to "bounce" the city is really interesting I think.
Then I can wonder where all the people have gone? Have they all gone to the pastry shop Citadellet;-)

Helena says:
How interesting that you comment on the architecture! I hadn't really thought about that until you said it, but I agree that it is a mixture indeed! And the people? I remember that there were some people out ... It's probably a mixture of the fact that in some pictures (City Hall) it was raining, that I sometimes wait for people to walk by (do not want to photograph them too closely) and that it was not super crowded right away 😉.

Hi Jojan! I don't dare to answer for sure. I remember that there was a car park nearby, where we parked our motorhome (7.3 metres). If I remember correctly, there were quite a few spaces for class 1 cars only, but there were also spaces for other vehicles (where we parked). I don't really remember if there was room for a bus or not.
