Home charging - why and how does it work? If you have a rechargeable car, i.e. an electric car or a plug-in hybrid, it is safe and easy to charge your car at home with a charging station. We go through what to consider when choosing a box and how to go about getting a tax reduction on the purchase.

Getting a rechargeable car
We have recently got rid of our car and are now driving with the electric bikes (when we are not driving a motorhome). If we were to get a car again, it would preferably be a rechargeable one. Right now there are several people in our circle of acquaintances who have bought electric cars or plug-in hybrids, and this seems to fit well with current statistics.
The number of rechargeable cars is increasing significantly in Sweden
The number of plug-in cars has increased significantly over the last decade. In 2013, there were only a few thousand rechargeable cars in Sweden. Today, the total number is approaching 250,000, and rechargeable cars represent four per cent of the passenger car fleet. Below you can see figures from Elbilsstatistik.se:

There are currently more than 2500 public charging stations in the country where you can charge your car.

If you have a rechargeable car, you can install a charging point at home, so that you can easily charge your car at home. One can Although you can charge your car with a standard 230 V socket, as your home's electrical system is not adapted to the long and heavy load, there is a risk of overheating, which can be a fire hazard.
It also takes a very long time to charge a car this way. If you charge an electric car with a battery size of 80 kWh in a standard socket, it takes about 35 hours to charge the car from 0-100%. If you use a 22 kW charging box instead, you can charge your car from 0-100% in less than 4 hours.
Which charging box to choose?
There are a number of different manufacturers producing charging stations, and saying which brand is "best" can be difficult. As far as we know, there are no objective comparisons in Sweden today. However, there are some things you can consider in order to find the charging station that suits you best. Among other things, you may need to think through:
- Do you need 1 or 2 sockets?
- Do you want the charging cable to be built-in, long or short?
- Do you want dynamic load balancing to be included? (Means that the charging box adapts the charging power to the rest of the house's power consumption, so you don't have to worry about blowing the fuse).
- Do you want a smart cloud service to be included? (e.g. to remotely control charging)
- Can the company apply for a tax credit for green technologies? (Requires that the company is registered in Sweden or registered with the Swedish Tax Agency).
How to get tax credits for green technologies
When you install a charging box at home, as a private customer you can get a 50 percent tax reduction for the cost of labour and materials, up to SEK 50,000. It works much like ROT and RUT where you receive the deduction directly on the invoice from the supplier. The company that delivers and installs the charging box then requests payment from the Swedish Tax Agency.
Do you have a plug-in car - or would you like one?
As the statistics speak for themselves - electric cars and plug-in hybrids are on the rise - it would be interesting to hear from our readers. Do you have a plug-in car at home, or have you thought about getting one? If so, have you got a charging point at home?
