You can find Tropikariet at Hävertgatan 21 in the northern part of Helsingborg, opposite the open-air museum Fredriksdal.

Visiting the Tropicarium in Helsingborg

We took the opportunity to visit the Tropicarium in Helsingborg during our visit to the city. It turned out to be interesting and we learnt some exciting facts about different odd species in the world. The park feels well-maintained and it is noticeable that they have put a lot of focus on stylish and inspiring interiors.

We spent a good amount of time looking at all the interesting, charming and sometimes scary animals. If you want, you can also stop for a coffee at the café, which overlooks the park's playful meerkats.

Expedition Madagascar

The first exhibition you enter is 'Expedition Madagascar', which explains the unique wildlife of the African island of Madagascar. It includes chameleons, turtles and the 'Madagascar hissing cockroach', which grows to 5-7.5 cm in length but is not a pest.

Here you can also see the incredibly beautiful lemurs, a type of semi-monkey found only in Madagascar. In the wild, they sometimes eat poisonous centipedes. To remove the poison, they "knead" the centipede so that it releases as much poison as possible. If the lemurs are careless with their kneading, they ingest too much poison and become groggy and high...

Life in the rainforest

On the second floor of the Tropikariet in Helsingborg, Sweden, visitors can familiarise themselves with life in the rainforest through exhibitions on South America and Africa. First you enter a section called 'Rainforest Night'.

Here, the Tropicarium has turned the clock around to showcase nocturnal animals in dim 'moonlight'. This is an interesting exhibit where you can familiarise yourself with animals such as the Egyptian cave flying dog, owl monkey, red-billed spider and slow loris.

When you get out in the 'daylight' you can meet animals such as crocodiles, red-legged spiders and poison dart frogs. The latter is the most poisonous animal in the world. A fully grown Phyllobates terribilis (a type of poison dart frog) has enough venom to kill around 1000 people!

There are also a variety of monkeys and birds on this floor, many of which move freely among visitors. These include the Goeldi monkey (about 20 cm in size), the pygmy silk monkey (the world's smallest monkey) and the golden-headed lion tamarin (one of the world's rarest animals).

Freaks of nature

On the third floor is the 'Freaks of Nature' exhibition. Here you can check out animals that are very strange in one way or another, such as being transparent or having other special features that no other animals have.

A special animal, for example, is the calf rat, which is a rodent but lives in colonies where the inhabitants have different roles: queen, worker or soldier. A bit like ants! The feline in the top picture in this post also belongs to this category - the unusual salamander axolotl.

Shark reefs and ponds

When you go down to the basement of Tropikariet in Helsingborg, you can visit the shark reef and check out the "petting zoo".

"Petting pond" is perhaps a bit of a strange word, because you are not allowed to pet or touch the animals in the ponds. You can, however, put your hands down (after washing them) and let the fish and prawns come up and "clean" you.
