Hrubá Skála
Hrubá Skála is a place in the area known as Bohemian Paradise, or Český ráj in Czech. This whole area offers lovely green deciduous trees, fantastic rock formations and opportunities for outdoor activities. There is also a romantic castle hotel on the edge of a dramatic cliff.
Hrubá Skála is located about 7 km southeast of Turnov in northern Bohemia / Bohemia.
Short walking tour at Hrubá Skála
We are in the Czech Republic on a press trip/study tour organised by the Czech Tourist Board, together with some journalists and tour operators. The very first stop on the trip was made at Hrubá Skála, where we made a short walk in the nature area. Great to be back in the beautiful Czech Republic again!
The nature here is really wonderfully green and lush. As the forest consists of deciduous trees, it is really lush and colourful. The scenery is also dramatic with steep cliffs, ravines and rocky outcrops.
Hiking is very popular in this area, and it's not hard to see why. Cycling is also popular, and some people even come here to climb.
Dramatic rock formations
At Hrubá Skála there are some rock formations that are very special. At least they are special for us. Here in Bohemian Paradise there are more places with this kind of rock formations. For example, it is not far to Prachovské rock labyrinth where there are lots of similar formations to walk around.
A relatively short walk brings you to a viewpoint where you can see several of the most impressive formations.
If you look very closely at the rock on the far left, you may be able to spot a small dot at the top that is a human being. Some people are not content to admire from a distance - they want to get to the top!
Hrubá Skála Castle
On a hill overlooking the dramatic landscape is a castle. We never visited the castle, but spotted it from another vantage point in the natural area.
The castle is located on a steep sandstone cliff originally called Skála (Rock). It was founded in the 14th century by Hynek von Valdštejn, a member of a prominent Czech family. The castle was later taken over by other families, and by the 16th century it was one of the largest estates in Central Europe.
At the end of the 16th century the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, after a fire in 1710 it was renovated in the Baroque style and in the middle of the 19th century it was finally given the neo-Gothic style seen today.
Hrubá Skála - today a castle hotel
Today, Hrubá Skála operates as a castle hotel. The castle is part of the Czech hotel chain EA Hotels and offers hotels, hostels and conference facilities. The hotel also has a restaurant and wellness centre and, of course, the opportunity to enjoy the nature in the area.
See more in the neighbourhood
The whole area of Bohemian Paradise is worth discovering, including the rock formations. Prachovské rock labyrinth. Not far from Hrubá Skála is the pleasant city of Liberec. In this area you will also find the Crystal Valley, with a very long tradition of glassmaking. Here, for example, there is handmade production of Christmas decorations, which are made as in the past and therefore included in the UNESCO list (!) of intangible cultural heritage.
If you like nature, travel west to discover Europe's largest sandstone arch Pravcicka Brana in Bohemian Switzerland or east to the stunning rock formations at Adrspach Rocks. It's also not too far to fantastic Prague!
