Quad biking in Tunisia is a wonderful experience. We went on a ride at the gateway to the Sahara - where the vast desert begins and the dunes are a little lower. A great and fast-paced adventure!

Riding a quad bike in Tunisia
Riding a quad bike in Tunisia, or quad as it is called in English, is a fun and wonderful way to experience the desert or nature. We did our tour just outside Douz, in the southern part of Tunisia.
A quad bike ride - at the gateway to the Sahara
When we arrived at the quad bike stand in Douz (Place Hancha-Douz), we were greeted by a variety of quad bikes, but also horses and camels. Several different tours depart from here! We each got to sit on a quad bike and were given very simple instructions: gas and brake.
For me (Helena), who does not have a driving licence, it felt completely manageable. I probably felt a little safer because I had previously driven a quad bike in the mountains. Egypt and in New Zealandbut you don't really need any prior knowledge.
Then it was time to head out into the desert. Really fun!
At the gateway to the Sahara, the dunes are a little lower, which is good, because it means you can easily drive up and down them with the quad bikes.
We had great fun, and Peter played with the shadows in the sand.
At a stop among the dunes, we were able to take a few more photos.
On the way back, we met another gang, driving a different kind of quad bikes, who also looked excited ...
Things to consider when riding a quad bike in Tunisia
Thinking about quad biking in Tunisia? It's a fun and relatively simple activity that can be enjoyed by most people. Here are some things to keep in mind when preparing for the ride.
- Dress in comfortable and practical clothes, suitable for sitting on a quad bike in swirling desert sand (and for the current temperature).
- Make sure you protect yourself from both sun and sand. Sunglasses are a good idea, as is wrapping a scarf around your face.
- Take your camera or mobile phone camera with you, but think about where you will store it while driving (e.g. pocket, waist bag, rucksack or similar).
- If you don't want to drive yourself, you can ride as a passenger behind a driver.
- For example, tours can take 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours.
We spotted a lightweight plane
When we came back, we saw something exciting inside some simple walls, and we asked if we could have a look inside. We did! Here was a lightweight plane with a kind of "bicycle" as a base. What an adventure vehicle! Peter's spontaneous comment was "Yes, I would like to try this!" ...
Nearby we saw a vehicle that looked like some kind of flying manikin from Star Wars. Exciting! We have to say that the desert attracts all kinds of adventures!

More to see and do in Tunisia
In addition to quad biking in Tunisia, there are of course many other experiences: in Douz you can experience the souk (market streets) and you can also go on a camel ride. In Tozeur there is an interesting old medina, and in the surroundings you will find several nice oases and an exciting filming location for Star Wars. We can also recommend the island of Djerba and the capital Tunis.

Have you tried quad biking in Tunisia, or perhaps elsewhere?
BP says:
Yes, I have driven a quad bike here at home. I worked for a while for the company that sold ATVs here in Sweden. However, I can safely say that your desert safari with the quad bikes was much more exciting than driving an ATV in a Swedish forest;-).
That aeroplane you spotted is a kind of paramotor and is also available here, but as I said, not as much fun to fly around with one here in Sweden;-)

Yes of course, then I understand that you drove here at home! Can understand that the aircraft are also here. But it is true that there is something special about the desert environment!!!

But oh what fun! I would like to try that. The quad bike, that is. Never in life that I would fly such a manick! 😉
