Djerbahood on the island of Djerba
Djerbahood on the island of Djerba displays an extensive collection of street art. The neighbourhood itself is charming, with white houses, blue gates, colourful flowers and nice little shops. The neighbourhood also offers this never-ending stream of street art.
Djerbahood is located in the village of Erridh on the island of Djerba in Tunisia. The site is just over 50 kilometres south of the capital Tunis.
150 artists from 30 countries
In 2014, 150 artists from 30 countries participated in the creation of around 250 murals in Djerbahood. The project was initiated by the Itinerrance de Paris gallery to offer an 'artistic adventure' and brought positive attention to the whole island. The area immediately began to attract tourists, and since then it has evolved with a range of new artists and paintings.
Walking tour of Djerbahood
We visited Tunisia during a press trip, and it was during this trip that we went to Djerbahood. We stopped by car, during a relatively unplanned visit, and started looking around. What an amazing place!
For starters, the alleys, which our guide says are Jewish, are incredibly charming. Here you walk along white staircase walls, under painted arches and past beautiful gates and winding flower beds.
Small shops and cafés are popping up here and there. In most shops you can buy arts and crafts.
It's nice to look at the art in the shops, but even more fascinating are the large paintings on the walls. There are works in a wide variety of styles and many have messages that speak to you strongly.
It's hard to stop taking photos. Still, you should know that we only show a fraction here. When we googled it afterwards, we realise that there are so much more.
That art is alive became clear when we saw an artist in action. Just as we passed by, he was working on his pictures. By the time you get here, they may have changed and evolved. Please, if you are travelling here, take pictures and tell us!
Below you see a picture of Peter, during our walk in Djerbahood. We were here in November and the climate was lovely.
Some paintings we really got sucked into. So much emotion in this street art in Tunisia!
Art should be beautiful, but also challenge and question. What did the artist mean when he insinuated that camels are used as toys? We love that the artists communicate with us and provoke thoughts, which sometimes also lead to conversations. All in all, we can say that Djerbadood is a great place to visit. Don't miss this great street art in Tunisia!

More to see and do in Djerba and Tunisia
There is of course much more to see and do on the island of Djerba in Tunisia. We highly recommend a visit to the beautiful El Ghriba synagogue. We can also recommend Parc Djerba Explore, with both crocodiles and arts and crafts, and the Museum of Guellela, which explains the local culture. Another hot tip is to try thalassotherapy, i.e. treatments using seawater. You can also play golf and, of course, enjoy the sun and swimming.

WOW! What amazing murals in Djerbahood. They are absolutely gorgeous, especially the header image, the 3D vases and the paintings before the camel.
Well, if horses can become rocking horses, surely camels can too. I've googled but haven't found out why camels can't be toys.

What street art, wow! Understand that the camera went hot. Your Tunisia trip has really made good PR for the country, not without us being hungry (but at present we are so starved of cool destinations that almost everything feels tempting).
