Södertuna Castle is beautifully situated by Frösjön in Södermanland. People come here, for example, to treat themselves to a weekend at the castle hotel or for an Afternoon Tea. We only had the roads past with the motorhome, and took the opportunity to look around the beautiful castle park.

Södertuna Castle
Södertuna Castle is today primarily a castle hotel with a restaurant, relaxation area and weekend packages. We had (unfortunately) no such case when we had the roads past last spring, but as you know, we like castles, so we took the opportunity to make a stop here. We have not had time to write about the visit before, so here is our report!
Södertuna Castle is located on an islet in Frösjön, not far from Gnesta, in Södermanland.
A castle with medieval origins
Södertuna Castle has medieval origins, and as early as the 13th or 14th century there was a manor house here called Wad. A major remodelling in 1892, with the help of architect Isak Gustav Clason, gave the castle the appearance it has today.
The first known owner was the knight Karl Niklisson, who was murdered in 1381 by Bo Jonsson Grip. The estate was transferred to the crown, and in the 17th century it fell to the councillor Claes Stiernsköld. It was then owned by various families, such as Sparre, Ehrensvärd, Wachtmeister, Hallwyl and von Eckermann. It is said that Ebba von Hallwyl can sometimes be seen at night as a watchful ghost.
Since 1985, the castle has been owned by Södertuna Konferensslott AB, which has been owned by the Åström family since 2007. The family is behind "Svenska Kulturpärlor", which in addition to Södertuna Castle includes Dufweholms Herrgård in Katrineholm and Gripsholms Värdshus and Gripsholms B&B in Mariefred.
Hotel, restaurant and weekend packages
As mentioned above, the castle now operates mainly as a hotel. There are five castle suites and 64 double rooms, and guests can book weekend packages with enticing names like "Romantic Weekend" or "Gourmet Weekend". Hotel guests can also enjoy the relaxation area with sauna, hot tub and pool.
The restaurant offers lunch or dinner on certain days, and on selected Saturdays, Afternoon Tea is served. Slightly more surprising are the collections housed in the castle: corkscrew collection, Sweden's largest collection of armagnac (a cognac-like drink) and a collection of old Meissen porcelain, with family crests from the Eckerman and Eckerman families. Hallwyl.
English park and nature at Södertuna Castle
At Södertuna Castle there is an English park, which was originally created in the 1790s. Just as English parks tend to be, it is a bit "wild", so it feels more like walking in a natural area.
Just outside the castle we came across an oak, which according to the sign is one of the oldest oaks in Södermanland. It is believed that the oak began to grow in the early 16th century, or perhaps even earlier. The sign suggests that Carl Michael Bellman, who hung out nearby for a period in the 1760s, may have leaned against it on occasion...
In the area we also found a quiz, with both child and adult questions.
All in all, we have to say that Södertuna Castle is a beautiful castle in a scenic location by Lake Frösjön. It is certainly nice to come here for a hotel night or two. We rolled on with our motorhome. And yes, now we start to long for spring and motorhome trips again!

Oh what a delicious celebration! So I would also like to celebrate sometime! 🙂 We also did not see the corkscrew collection (because we were never inside the castle), but it is written about it on their website and it clearly sounds a little different 😉.
