Häringe castle - fine castle hotel in Södermanland

Häringe Castle is located just south of Stockholm and is a castle you visit for lovely weekend packages, luxurious dinners and lazy days in the castle pool. We didn't do any of this, but checked out the castle and dreamed of a future, slightly more exclusive, visit.

Häringe Castle

Today, Häringe Castle serves as a castle hotel and conference centre, with a restaurant, outdoor pool and various activities and packages, such as Afternoon Tea, Häringe Stay or "Castle Murder", where you become a witness to a "murder" to be solved.

Häringe Castle is located in the municipality of Haninge in Södermanland, just four miles south of the centre of Stockholm.

Delusions of grandeur, decadence and scandal ...

The history of Häringe began in the 11th century, when the Viking Sote claimed the Häringe peninsula. In the 16th century, Gustav Vasa claimed Häringe, which he believed he was entitled to due to kinship. He then passed the property on to Count Gustaf Horn, who in the 1650s built the building we see today.

After that, the castle changed hands many times, and was ruled by both strong women like Agneta Wrede and people with high spirits like Carl Julius De la Gardie. If the castle's own website is to be believed, the money has flowed and the parties have been wild.

All owners have had more or less delusions of grandeur, almost unlimited resources, huge expenses and a penchant for decadence, scandal, glamour and parties.

In the 1930s, the castle was renovated and modernised by industrialist Torsten Kreuger, brother of matchstick millionaire Ingvar Kreuger. He built Sweden's first Olympic-sized swimming pool, a bowling alley and an underground tunnel between the main building and one of the wings.

When Kreuger was charged with embezzlement, he sold the castle to Axel Wenner-Gren, who passed it on to his wife Marguerite. The couple filled the castle with expensive furniture and decorated the park with statues from Peru and Ireland, along with statues of the Nordic gods.

After another change of ownership, the castle was bought in 2017 by property mogul Vesko Mijac. Today it is run by his daughter Sofie as a hotel, restaurant and conference centre.

Our visit to Häringe Castle

We passed Häringe Castle during one of our motorhome trips last year. Since we like castles and castle history, we decided to stop by, even though we didn't have a castle weekend booked.

At first it looked a bit tricky to pass under the beautiful gate, with a clearance of 2.7 metres. Our motorhome is 3.1 metres high! Then we saw that you could drive in at the side of the gate. Perfect!

Hotels and restaurants

As mentioned, Häringe Castle is primarily a hotel, restaurant and conference centre. The menus for those staying at Häringe are as follows fantastic out. For example, how about an introductory "Amuse-bouche", followed by lobster soup, a main course of spiced venison or baked char and finally baked chocolate with raspberry sorbet? We certainly wouldn't say no ...

When staying at the hotel, guests also have access to the large outdoor pool (in summer) and can book various activities such as bowling, sauna, tennis, boules, western horse riding and archipelago experiences.

Castle garden with exotic statues

We weren't here under any luxurious castle auspices, but you are free to wander around the beautiful castle park, which we did.

In the park we found some interesting stones with rune inscriptions.

We also walked down to the part of the park that is filled with statues.

Apparently some of the statues come from Peru and Ireland, and we have to admit they feel exotic.

We also checked out Marguerite Wenner-Gren's dog cemetery. "Here lies Marguerite Wenner-Gren's 38 best friends", you can read on the sign. It's obvious that Marguerite was a dog lover, and the castle is still dog-friendly today. Dogs are allowed in both the castle and most of the dining rooms, although this must be booked in advance.

Another exciting "detail" we found was a fallen giant oak tree. We don't know how old it is, but the sign next to it said "The oak grows for 300 years, stands still for 300 years and dies for 300 years".

Last but not least, we offer a picture of the jetty and the water, which is just below the castle. A beautiful setting!

See more in the neighbourhood

Right next to Häringe Castle is the Häringe-Hammersta nature reserve. It is also not too far to the cosy Årsta Castle, lovely Tyresta National Park and beautiful Tyresö Castle. Also Gålö, with camping and beautiful scenery, is nearby. If you drive south instead, you can get to the charming little town known as Trosa, or to beautiful Tullgarn Castle.
