Hotel Esplanade in Stockholm
Housed in a beautiful Art Nouveau building from 1910, Hotel Esplanade is perfectly located for those who want to discover Stockholm. What about us living in Stockholm? We went to a hotel for one night to avoid the storm in our houseboat, and in return we got to experience a hotel night in our own city.
Hotel Esplanade is located on Strandvägen, overlooking Nybroviken. It is less than a 10-minute walk to Kungsträdgården, 15 minutes to Sergels torg and about the same distance to Djurgården.
An ancient hotel
Hotel Esplanade is an old-fashioned hotel, once known as "Grand Pensionat Dehn". Back then, you could book full board for five kronor, and if you were lucky (or an important person) you could be seated near Mrs Dehn herself during dinner.
The hotel changed names and owners in 1954, but the original Art Nouveau environment is still preserved and the original birch furniture remains.
Nice hotel
The hotel is, with its 34 rooms, relatively small and thus also feels personal and homely. We were very well received and the woman at the reception offered coffee and cake, and wondered if we wanted her to start the sauna. Then we went up the winding little staircase, and through the beautiful corridors to our room.
Our room
We booked the simplest kind of room, a standard double room, as it was more than enough for us. The room was indeed small, but charming and nice. There was a safety box, minibar and other things you might need. The only downside was that the bathroom fan started in the middle of the night, with a rather loud humming, but luckily we managed to calm it down.
Work and coffee in the lounge
The price includes coffee and cake, which is available around the clock, and if you want, you can take the coffee to the lounge. What does it matter that the room is a bit small when you can sit and work in the lounge overlooking Nybroviken in a peaceful environment?
breakfast
The price also includes breakfast, which we were very happy with. Good bread, scrambled eggs, bacon, salmon, fresh vegetables, fruit, yoghurt, chia pudding, granola, croissants... No, we didn't miss anything!
So, what did we think of the Hotel Esplanade in Stockholm?
All in all, it was a very nice hotel stay. We liked the ancient environment, the quiet atmosphere, the central location and the nice reception. The price, 1200 SEK for us together, we thought felt reasonable considering everything that was included.
More to see and do in the neighbourhood
Hotel Esplanade is centrally located in Östermalm, close to Kungsträdgården, but also to the Royal Palace, Old Town, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården. Nearby museums include the Historical Museum, Hallwylska Palace and the Nordic Museum.

Maria's memoirs says:
Fun with staycation! I've never stayed in a hotel in Stockholm because I usually stay with my family in Vallentuna when I'm there. But of course it would be fun with a hotel night sometime, if I would find an accommodation that feels special enough. Or maybe in the old town, but I can imagine that it is expensive to live there.

Understand! When you have relatives in place, it is natural to stay with them! But just as you say, if it is a hotel that stands out, it becomes an overall experience and can be worth it just for that!

What a great idea! Very nice! Perfect location as well. Have stayed from time to time at Diplomat, almost next door and think it has been very good. But usually a little more expensive and it is not needed at all. Stockholm has many nice "boutique hotels" that are well worth trying.
We live so centrally so it is not often that we stay overnight. But a good alternative for us has been to book breakfast at a hotel and then spend the morning there. Little Hotel Franz at Slussen, for example, has a great breakfast and many of them.

The Diplomat is located in an equally beautiful building. We have had a drink there at some point. That with breakfast is a good tip, I love hotel breakfast 🙂 Thanks for the tip about Little Hotel Franz!

How often have I walked past that building without realising that it is a hotel?
I think it's wonderful to treat yourself to a little luxury at home from time to time. For sleeping on the boat in the storm with a lot of noise - no, thanks! You are worth a little luxury:-)

We're used to a little rocking, but when there are gusts of wind from the north, it becomes uncomfortable. A good opportunity for a staycation 🙂

Not lived on the Esplanade but have looked at it a few times. The right price in the future so maybe I will strike. 🙂

We thought it was nice, good location and quite ok price. However, we are quite unused to staying in hotels in Stockholm so we don't have much to compare with 😉.

Cosy to stay in a hotel in your own city! We did it last week, at Hotel Frantz as Ditte mentions above. Hotel Esplanade has been passed by many times so fun to see pictures of what it looks like on the inside!

Isn't it cosy? Now I'm a little curious about that Frantz 🙂 ...
