Retrieving the motorhome from winter storage
Last Friday we picked up the motorhome from winter storage. Our motorhome FREEDOM has spent this winter indoors in a garage in Uppsala. When we booked the 8th of April as pick-up day and inspection day, we did not think that there would be snowy weather on this day ... but that's exactly what it was.
Inspecting the motorhome
Picking up the motorhome in snowy weather was not on our wish list, but we didn't want to miss our inspection appointment. We were a bit nervous about how the inspection would go (since we're leaving soon!), but luckily the motorhome passed without any remarks. Phew! We just had to drive home and wait for better weather.
Spring cleaning your motorhome
Fortunately, we've already had better weather, and now it's time! Preparing your motorhome for spring. We've done a full day of cleaning, but will continue a bit more in the coming days. FREEDOM needed a real refreshment! Peter has dried the motorhome outside with cloth rags and I (Helena) have gone through it inside.
A motorhome has limited space, but oh how dirty it can get! There are so many nooks and crannies everywhere where dirt can accumulate... When we spring clean the motorhome, we usually, among other things:
- Clean out the fridge and freezer and wash all the shelves.
- Wipe all cabinets, drawers, doors and window frames with detergent.
- Wash all textiles and hang out clean sheets and towels.
- Shake pillows, blankets, storage baskets and other items in the fresh air.
- Wash the bathroom and toilet thoroughly, with detergent.
- Sweep and/or vacuum the floor and under the beds.
- Go through all the shelves and compartments, sorting and clearing out.
In the beds, of course, we have our bedding sets with caravans (from our online shop), which are now freshly washed. We will also take out clean towels and kitchen towels with a campervan pattern, so it will be both fresh and cosy!
This year we've also added a few products that we hope will help keep your campervan extra fresh and clean. "Sanitation wax" is used in the toilet to reduce odours, "Camper" is a sanitation agent for the drain tank and "Water tank" will keep the water tank fresh. We may have to come back with a review, but this little extra effort felt good in connection with the spring cleaning of the motorhome!
More pre-departure preparations
Now it's really getting close to departure! It feels absolutely fantastic that we will be out on a roll for almost four months. We won't be on holiday for long, of course - we'll be working from the campervan - but it will be great fun. We will continue to clean over the next few days, and make other preparations, such as :
- Filling up fresh water in the fresh water tank
- Filling the water heater
- Buying LPG
- Shopping for basic food and consumables
- Pack your clothes and other belongings ...
Spring cleaning your motorhome - how to do it?
As a motorhome or caravan owner, how do you usually go about spring cleaning? Do you have any special tips or tricks?
Solan says:
Finally, it will be rolling for real i.e. a full four months for Freedom. Good start for the car that passed the inspection too, congratulations!
You leave, we've just come home after five months. The roles are reversed, but I'm in the back seat. Travelling is life! 🌍

Isn't it nice when you get to take the motorhome home again after storage!
Ours is freshly cleaned as we put it away last autumn 🙂 .
So now we bring it home on Friday and prepare for a new pleasant season!
Enjoy....Happy Easter!

Yes, it is best if you clean properly before winter storage. We try to do it, but it's usually not good enough ... 😉 .

The spring cleaning at my place usually goes faster than the autumn cleaning. In the autumn, my owners go through me thoroughly so after that cleaning both inside and outside I am really clean and smell good when I am put in for winter storage... Thus, spring cleaning is much easier because then it is vacuumed and dusted a little easily before all the goods are put in.
How exciting to have such a long trip again and I'm sure my owners are following you to see if there are any new destinations to write up and perhaps visit in the future.
All good

It is good to do a thorough cleaning before winter storage. We are probably a bit the opposite. at least that's what happened this spring. The cleaning before winter storage was a bit sloppy, so you have to be even more careful now 😉.

We have missed once left dog food behind. What happened was visited by a small mouse. It's important to clean properly in the autumn if the car is going to be parked for a while.
Have a good trip!
Happy Easter
We are in Söderköping and will be celebrating Easter in the neighbourhood.

It's easy to miss something! We missed two garlics (which were behind a basket and which I only found now). We don't seem to have been visited by mice though, thankfully! Wishing you a great Easter!

Of course, spring cleaning is much more fun than clearing out the motorhome in the autumn. Still, we try to get it really clean in the autumn so there's nothing that can get mouldy or attract mice. This winter we succeeded like that. Mouse droppings both here and there, but none that managed to get caught in the traps loaded with sweet and sticky Snickers...
As we speak, we are on our way to the ferry terminal in Gothenburg, how wonderful it will be!

I agree that spring cleaning is more fun! We also try to clean in the autumn, but it's often a bit messy. We try to empty everything edible, but this time we missed two garlics. We were lucky to avoid mice! We have experienced this in previous winters, but not this year. Wishing you a super nice trip!!!

Many CONGRATULATIONS to you at Bilprovningen. You made it home without any problems. I recall that the Freedom does not have winter tyres, but fortunately it was free on motorways.
You are clearly ready for a long-term adventure in Europe with a clinically clean Freedom:-)

Welcome to the roads again! We ourselves probably never spring clean, but we wash the motorhome outside after the slightest dirt and then it is clean and nice inside our garage in the yard... However, we (Birgitta) carefully clean the interior before each trip.
