To get to Germany and Hamburg we took Finnlines Malmö - Travemünde. This route suited us well as we were on our way to visit lovely Hamburg. Here we tell you a bit more about the trip!
Table of contents
Driving the motorhome
We opted for the 16:00 departure from Malmö and arrive in Travemünde at 01:00 at night. You can also choose completely different departure times, such as travelling in the morning to arrive during the day.
This time we tried something we had never tried before. On Finnline's ferries, a number of motorhomes are able to plug in electricity during the transition, for a price of £50.
Normally, we try to board ferries with a reasonably empty fridge because you have to switch off the gas, but now we didn't have to think about that and could keep the fridge on throughout the journey. Smoothly!
Our cabin on board
We travelled by cabin, and it was very nice. After all, the journey takes quite a few hours, and we spent a lot of these in the cabin working on the computers, reading and sleeping. You should turn off roaming at sea, but you can order a WiFi package if you want. We did not actually do that, but took the opportunity to be offline for a while.
View while leaving Malmö
As we left Malmö, we saw the Öresund Bridge disappearing behind us, which of course meant that new adventures await!
Bars and restaurants on board Finnlines Malmö - Travemünde
The Finnlines Malmö - Travemünde ferry carries many trucks and their drivers, and is not exactly a 'pleasure ferry'. However, you will find most of what you need, as long as you check the opening hours carefully. A lot of services are available only open the first hour after departure and the last hour before arrival.
Next to the restaurant is a small bar, where we had a beer and worked on the computers for a while.
There is another bar higher up in the ship. This was open a little longer, and here you can order a sausage or a hot sandwich even when the restaurant is closed. Here it was fully of lorry drivers during the open hours.
The restaurant is open for the first and last hour, so you have to take advantage of that if you want a real meal. During our trip you could choose early dinner and/or extremely early breakfast.
Since we were driving to Hamburg and needed energy for the journey, we had breakfast. Expect a hearty one with fried potatoes, meatballs, sausages, white beans in tomato sauce and scrambled eggs!
More on board on Finnlines Malmö - Travemünde
What else is on board Finnlines Malmö - Travemünde? As mentioned above, this is not a pleasure cruise, so a hot tip is to bring a good book or things to do on the computer.
There is an information desk where you can ask questions, which is open at the beginning and end of the journey. To the right is a small duty-free shop and to the left is a small arcade.
There is actually also a sauna and jacuzzi. We were not tested, but we understand that it was included in the price and was open for part of the trip.
Driving from Travemünde to Hamburg
When you arrive in Travemünde you are two miles from Lübeck and seven miles from Hamburg. We drove directly to Hamburg, which took about an hour. There we parked at the car park "Parkplatz am Strand Pauli" at Sankt Pauli Hafenstrasse 89. Here you have no service, but excellent location for visiting Hamburg. The price is about 130 kr/day on weekdays and about 190 kr/day on weekends (2022).
Then it's time to discover Hamburg! As you walk from the car park towards the city centre, you can stroll along the waterfront with lots of big ships and tourist boats. The city centre is also full of small restaurants where you can buy "fischbrötchen" (fast food in the form of bread with, for example, salmon or herring).
The rest of the city has a lot to offer in terms of museums and culture. For example, don't miss the special concert hall Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg's new landmark. Read more about Hamburg here. Tips for the rest of Germany can be found below.

Have a good time in Hamburg!
I haven't been there for a long time now, but about 20-30 years ago I often went there for work.
Have a nice weekend!

Helena says:
Thank you very much! We will come back with reports!

Mr Thomas Akner says:
hello
We had tickets 24/4 with departure 22:00.
We tested ourselves for covid on Saturday and we were both positive. Tried to cancel but they have no staff on weekends so no one could receive our cancellation. And you do not get anything back regardless of the reason so this non-trip cost 1900 SEK. We have travelled here before and thought it was very good. Car and motorbike. But we realise that cancellations ticket is important so therefore we will take Rödby-Puttgarden in the future.
Regards
Thomas

Annica Rosander says:
Hi, I was wondering how to connect to electricity with the motorhome? Is it with a cable from the regular electrical outlet and what kind of plug is it on the ferry. Do you need a long electrical cable?
Annica Rosander
30 April 2022 - 9:25
Helena says:
Hello! You have to book the electricity in advance and then you get one of those green signs when you check in. Then they help you to places where there is electricity. Both eurocoupling and regular coupling work. They also have cable reels, and they help.

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
We have always taken Finnlines to Finland from Kapellskär. Food is available on these lorry ferries, we have ordered electricity on these too.
It's been a long time since we were in Hamburg, it will be fun to follow your journey.

Helena says:
Glad you want to follow! Hamburg has a lot to offer! 🙂

Barbro Becker says:
As early as 1989, we started travelling with the then Nordö, which later became Finnlines, and always travel with them when we go out in Europe. In fact, as recently as last Thursday, we went with the ferry that left at 1600, had a similar cabin and sat in the same bar that you have taken pictures of.
Some things have changed since 1989, for example, we were allowed to stand on deck with a caravan (there were not so many caravans) and we had access to the carriages throughout the trip. After the sinking of the Estonia, they were more careful with safety, so that privilege ended. At that time they were also known for their good food, we do not think the food on board is particularly good.
It suits us to travel from Malmö to Travemünde, you sleep on the journey and are well rested when you arrive. The fact that I can also visit my 92-year-old sister in Malmö is also an advantage. And the cheap price should not be despised...
This time we arrived in the middle of the night and drove directly to CITTI outside Lübeck and are still there. It is Walpurgis weekend in Germany and it is usually full on pitches and campsites, so we do not leave until tomorrow. We think, that we end up in the Netherlands, don't really know yet, we are vagabonds who are out on a spring trip and have no real goals... It will be as it will be....
30 April 2022 - 11:29
Helena says:
What fun that you went almost exactly the same trip almost at the same time! Interesting also to hear your experiences about how it has been! Wishing you a really wonderful spontaneous spring trip! Feel free to come back and tell us where you ended up and how you are!!! 🙂

Maj Ivarsson says:
Hi wonderful that you have now really come a bit on the way with your trip. Being on type "Roll" is sometimes the most ultimate if you have the opportunity. and if you have a motorhome, you have to take advantage of as much as you can and have the finances to. Fuel prices are not so cheap nowadays...but what to do. We have acquired a compressor box where we can have the refrigerated goods. But mostly we use it as a freezer box. It works well because we now have "Lithium batteries". It has really made a big difference in how easy it is now to avoid having to connect to parking spaces. this after we manage well with charging from the car and solar cells. Have a continued good journey.
Regards, Maj Jan and LOKE.
30 April 2022 - 15:19
Helena says:
Yes, it's great to be on the road! Fuel prices are of course a dilemma when you are out and about. We adapt a little both in terms of speed and distances .... but we do not want to stay at home! Lithium batteries seem incredibly smooth! It is on the wish list, perhaps in some future motorhome if we ever get such an opportunity!

Mr Göran Lundgren says:
I have travelled for many years with Finnlink Malmö-Travemunde both as a driver and privately with a motorhome, the boat is very affordable but not a pleasure boat but neither are the other boats to Germany. The food has become worse unfortunately and this is due to fewer diners as drivers do not have free food for several years, power to the motorhome they have always had. A pure transport trip of 9 hours, but an excellent boat at a very good price, recommended for motorhomes and caravans.
30 April 2022 - 19:03
Helena says:
Agree that the boat trip is affordable! It is not exactly a pleasure cruise, but you get where you are going 🙂.
02 May 2022 - 6:55
Matts Torebring says:
It's nice to go on the boats, isn't it? We only did it a few times at the beginning of our European travels. Then we took the short boat trips or drove the bridges. I tend to get a bit stressed out by having to meet deadlines, late at night or early in the morning. How nice to have electricity for the car. Have a nice Valborg
30 April 2022 - 19:31
Helena says:
Thank you very much! Hope you also had a nice weekend!
02 May 2022 - 6:55
BP says:
Finnline's boat is very similar to Polferrie's boat to Poland - a "utility boat", definitely not a cruise ship. With this in mind, I must say that your cabin was incredibly large and very nice - compared to Polferries ditto.
It's been a long time since I've had a Fischbrötchen, which is a "speciality" even in Amsterdam.
30 April 2022 - 20:01
Elisabeth Åslin says:
Hey, hey, hey, hey,
What was the total cost of your trip with cabin and motorhome and electricity?
01 May 2022 - 16:44
Helena says:
Elisabeth, around 2000 SEK approximately.
02 May 2022 - 7:01
Helena says:
BP; yes, it is pretty much a "utility boat", which I think many of the ferry crossings are. But you get where you are going! 🙂
02 May 2022 - 6:56
Lena - good for the soul says:
What a cool feeling to see the Öresund Bridge behind you like that! (yes, I am behind with the reading a lot 😉 )
It sounds like the Gothenburg-Kiel ferry is a bit more lazy (to the extent that it can be) than Malmö-Travemünde then, but that route sounds like a good alternative if you're going further in Germany.
