Restaurants in Hamburg
There are of course plenty of restaurants in Hamburg to choose from. Would you like some tips along the way? Or maybe just want to know a little more about the restaurant culture in Germany's second largest city? During our short week in Hamburg we managed to visit a bunch of eateries, and here you can read more about them.
1. kitchens
We start by recommending the restaurant at the hotel where we stayed for three days, Pierdrei Hotel HafenCity. Here we took a lunch just when we arrived. Peter chose fish and chips and Helena took the dish of the day, which was Ceasar salad. We were both very happy with the food (and the sunshine on the terrace!). When we tried to have dinner here another night, it was totally booked, so the restaurant is popular!

2nd Blockbräu
One evening we had dinner at the Blockbräu beer hall, located on the harbour near the Elbe tunnel. This is a classic beer hall that's great when you want a beer and a hearty German meal. Peter ordered a sirloin steak and Helena ordered fried fish with mashed potatoes. Tasty and pleasant, without offering any major surprises.
Those who want to can also try the traditional dish "foie gras", which is similar to Swedish lapskojs, but served with fried egg and possibly even matjessill.

3rd Berlin railway station
Berliner Bahnhof is a classy and stylish restaurant that focuses on wine, salad, pasta and small dishes on bread. Here we had a lunch pasta flavoured with cheese and asparagus. Very good and nice!

4. Nil
The most luxurious meal we had in any restaurant in Hamburg was undoubtedly a 4-course dinner at Restaurant Nil. Everything was delicious and well cooked, from the first bite to the last, and we walked out of there very satisfied.
Here we first had delicious white asparagus and then a tasty little pasta dish with spinach before it was time for flank steak with potato terrine. It all ended with a delicious rhubarb tartlet.

5. wild girl
Wildes Fräulein is a small chain, which also has two restaurants in Berlin. We stumbled in here, more or less by chance, and were very pleased with our visit. The restaurant has an Alpine theme, with a lift basket in the centre of the restaurant and appropriate details such as cowbells.
Even the food has an Alpine flavour. Peter had rösti with cold smoked salmon and Helena ordered "spätzle" (a kind of South German pasta) with spinach, tomato and sheep's cheese. Very tasty and well prepared!

6. Old Commercial Room
The Old Commercial Room is a traditional restaurant, frequented by many celebrities, located opposite St Michael's Church. Founded in 1795, the restaurant has a pub-style interior with mahogany and brass. Here you can eat a variety of traditional dishes, the most typical of which is the Humburg "labskaus".
Some celebrities out of hundreds who have visited this restaurant in Hamburg
Charlie Sheen / Crocodile Dundee / Bee Gees / Fats Domino / Art Garfunkel / Steffi Graf / Tom Jones / Clint Eastwood / Joe Cocker /Suzy Quattro / Ozzy Osbourne / Pierce Brosnan / Charles Aznavour / Andy Warhol / Dennis Hopper / Status Quo / Neil Young
This dish is basically the same as the Swedish school food classic "lapskojs", while also having some characteristics of "pytt i panna". The dish consists of mashed potatoes mixed with minced meat, served with fried eggs, beetroot, pickled cucumber and matjessill. This is not our favourite dish, but the quality and service was excellent!

7. brewery house Altes Mädchen
Braugasthaus Altes Mädchen is a restaurant for those who like craft beer and hearty dishes like burgers and fish and chips. The venue is cosy and by late afternoon it had become a popular place, with lots of visitors and a cheerful atmosphere.
Find here: Lagerstrasse 28B, Hamburg
Bonus: Fish rolls
There are not only regular restaurants in Hamburg, but also simple eateries, and we definitely recommend trying the "fischbrötchen" while you're here. This fast food is served in small stalls all along the harbour and can be offered with herring, salmon or breaded fish, for example. A perfect lunch stop when you just want something simple!

Dregel, dregel! You don't go to Germany if you want to lose weight immediately. And yet the dishes you have eaten are not even "starchy" as in Bavaria with dumplings and pork loin/pork loin with sauce, etc.?
Think the dishes you ate looked incredibly appetising and beautiful. Laughed at the German version of Fish 'n chips. Plagiarism indeed;-)

The food was really good we must say! Slightly stodgy in some places, but just as you say, absolutely no sauce. We were very satisfied! 🙂
