Germany's longest suspension bridge - Titan RT in the Harz Mountains

We've heard several times about Germany's longest suspension bridge, and now we were keen to see it for ourselves. So we set the GPS on the Titan RT and drove to the popular attraction.

Germany's longest suspension bridge (Titan RT) spans the Rappbode Damm in the Harz Mountains, about 50 miles south-west of Magdeburg, in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Rappbode dam

Rappbode Dam is the largest dam in the Harz region and the highest dam in Germany. The dam is crossed by a car and pedestrian bridge, and the famous suspension bridge is close by.

RT Titan - Germany's longest suspension bridge

The RT Titan is a 483 metre long suspension bridge, making it the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Germany. Today, the bridge has become a popular attraction, and in addition to walking on the bridge, you can try out various adrenaline-boosting activities... The site also has food courts, a playground and the unusual 'Solitaire' observation tower.

See Germany's longest suspension bridge - from the car bridge

We started by checking out the suspension bridge from the combined pedestrian and car bridge. From here you have a really good view of the suspension bridge, and you are also in a good position to watch the zipline or the bungyjump-like "Gigaswing" ...

You can also look at everything from above, from the viewpoint where the suspension bridge starts. From here you have a nice view of the car bridge, the suspension bridge and the valley.

See Germany's longest suspension bridge - by walking on it

Finally, the bridge can be experienced by walking on it. You have to pay a fee (currently €6/adult) and then just step out onto the bridge and enjoy.

At least Peter enjoyed the view. If you, like me, Helena, are hysterically afraid of heights, it's much more enjoyable to stay on solid ground and just watch that swinging bridge from a distance. Peter did say that it felt stable and didn't move much, but that could possibly vary depending on how windy it is.

Zipline and 'Gigaswing'

After checking out the view in different ways, we were satisfied, but if you're not, there are different ways to challenge yourself. You can zipline all the way to the other side of the water.

Zipline

There is also 'Gigaswing', which is a variant of bungee jumping. Here you start from the small building hanging under the bridge and throw yourself downwards. I (Helena) was so content to just watch, and was very grateful that it wasn't me dangling from a rope out there...

Tower Solitaire

Right next to the entrance to the suspension bridge is the 39 metre high 'Solitaire' tower. The shiny steel structure is brand new and when we were here it hadn't even opened. However, they were getting ready to open the next day.

The tower has several functions. Firstly, it serves as a viewing tower and can be accessed via 160 steps or a panoramic glass lift. The tower also offers activities for those who want a little more adrenaline.

"Ultrashot" offers a quick way to the top with a "catapult". When you go down again, you can choose "Wall running", where you climb down head first. This is not really for me (Helena) ... but maybe for you?

Where can I park my motorhome?

There is a car park in the vicinity of the bridge called Equestrian centre at the damwhere there should be services such as emptying and electricity. We were not standing here but in Thale, which is two kilometres away. In Thale there are several sites to choose from, both with and without service. We stood on Parking An der Hütte, which is a place without services, but we still liked it.

More to see and do in the neighbourhood

Germany's longest suspension bridge is located in the Harz Mountains, and there's plenty to see and do here, not least in terms of dramatic scenery. You can visit the Hexentanzplatz (Witches' Dance Square) and the Teufelmauer (Devil's Wall) in Thale. You can also visit beautiful cities like Quedlinburg, Wernigerode or Goslar, or take the famous Brockenbahn train all the way to the top of the Brocken mountain range.
