Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic

Hradec Králové is a pleasant and historic Czech city with around 100,000 inhabitants. Here you can expect a lot of sights, but also cosy places and nature.

Hradec Králové is located in Bohemia (Bohemia in German) in the north of the Czech Republic, just over 70 miles north-east of Prague.

What to do in Hradec Králové?

What to see and do in Hradec Králové? Here you will find culture and nature, but also food experiences. We have collected our best tips here in a list.

1. Discover the Velke Namesti square.

In the centre of Hradec Králové is Velke Namesti Square. This is a beautiful square surrounded by a number of historic buildings, such as the former town hall, towers and churches.

2. Admire the Holy Spirit Cathedral

Just off the Velke Namesti square is the mighty Holy Spirit Cathedral, founded in 1307. The church rises mightily above the square, but was not open when we were here. (The corridor in the photo next to it is not from the church, but from a corridor nearby).

3. Climb the White Tower

Next to the cathedral in Hradec Králové is the White Tower (Bílá věž). The construction of this 72 metre high tower started in 1574 and it is still the tallest building in the city. If you enter the building, you can see a model of the tower, which some say is even more beautiful than the tower itself.

You can also take the stairs to the top, where you have a magnificent view of the Velke Namesti square and other parts of the city.

4. Peek into the church "Kostel Nanebevzeti Panny Marie"

A church that is perhaps less impressive on the outside, but all the more beautiful inside, is the 'Kostel Nanebevzeti Panny Marie' (Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary).

5. Photograph the nice houses "Kanovnicke domy"

Do not miss the nice houses "Kanovnicke domy" on nám. Jana Pavla II, which is perhaps one of the most photographed objects in Hradec Králové.

6. Visit the Museum of Eastern Bohemia

In Hradec Králové you will find the East Bohemian Museum (Muzeum východních Čech). The beautiful building was built in 1909-1912, and the museum is worth visiting.

Inside the museum you can learn a lot about the history of the city and the area. Among other things, you can see a model of the rigorous fortress that once existed here. Fascinating!

7. Stroll along the city's rivers

One thing that is delicious about this city is that two rivers (or streams) run through here. One is the large and famous Elbe River. The other, the Tiché Orlice, is a stream that joins the Elbe in the centre of the city.

It is nice to walk along the Elbe, and it is also nice to see the place where the two waters join. There is also a statue, with a man and a woman, showing the union of the waters.

8. stroll in Jirásek Park

In the neighbourhood of the place where the water joins is the Jirásek Park. Here you can expect beautiful flowers and flower beds. We also saw a little girl feeding the ducks, who was surprised by another "filur" who also wanted food.

The park also contains the wooden church "Pravoslavný kostel svatého Mikuláše", which was founded in the early 17th century and has been transported here.

9. Choose the piece of music in the singing staircase

One place we liked in Hradec Králové is the singing staircase! The steps light up and classical music plays. If you come from the top, you can use a display to request which classical piece to play!

10. drink coffee from freshly ground beans at LamCafé

Do you like good coffee? Then you should not miss LamCafé! Here you are served freshly ground coffee, made from selected coffee beans from South America. You can of course also buy beans to take home with you.

11. Shop for chocolate made from selected beans

It is not only coffee beans that thrive in Hradec Králové, but also chocolate beans, which are sown at "Jordis". Both places cooperate with each other, and this is also a perfect place for nice gifts!

Beer, as you know, is a big deal in the Czech Republic. There are many local breweries in the area and when in town you can find them as in the picture below, in simple little "beer stands".

The biggest local beer is Klenot, which also has its own restaurant and bakery in town. The restaurant is called Pivovarské Domy.

14. go to a festival

Hradec Králové hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. We were lucky enough to arrive in town just as the festival was taking place "Rock for people", which is organised every summer. There is also a theatre festival every week, which is one of the largest in the Czech Republic.

15. Experience nature at Stříbrný rybník campsite

The fine city of Hradec Králové is all very well, but much of it is about nature. The Czechs themselves love nature and are happy to leave the cities when they are on holiday. One way to experience nature is to take a trip to the Stříbrný rybník campsite (motorhome, caravan, cabin or tent) and enjoy hiking, cycling, fishing and adventure activities.
