Miltenberg, Germany
Miltenberg is a historical city, and you can tell by the old buildings and walls. It is also surrounded by beautiful nature.
Miltenberg is located in the federal state of Bavaria, about 7 kilometres southeast of Frankfurt am Main.
What can you do in Miltenberg?
So what can you see and do in Miltenberg? First and foremost, you can of course stroll through the charming half-timbered houses, but there is also much more to see and discover. We've put together a list of our top tips here.
1. Strolling among half-timbered houses in the Old Town
Miltenberg is another of the cities we follow along the German holiday route "Korsvirkesvägen". It is therefore not surprising to find a real half-timbered idyll. The old town of Miltenberg is filled with beautiful and charming half-timbered houses. Here you can stroll through cosy alleys, browse in shops or sit down in cafés or restaurants in a fantastic setting.
2. Hang out at Alter Marktplatz (Schnatterloch)
Alter Marktplatz (Schnatterloch) is a historic square in Miltenberg, often depicted in photos of the city. It is home to a group of beautiful half-timbered houses and the Marktbrunnen fountain from 1583, created by sculptor Michael Junker. You'll also find restaurants and ice cream parlours, as well as stairs leading up to the city's castle.
3. Check out the church of St James
Just off the Alter Marktplatz, at Hauptstrasse 166, is the St. Jakobuskirche. This Catholic parish church is dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder. A church has existed on the site since the 13th century, but the current building was designed in the 19th century.
4. Check out the medieval hotel Zum Riesen.
In the centre of the old town of Miltenberg is the medieval hotel "Zum Riesen". The estate is known in documents from the 12th century, and from the early 15th century it is described as the "Zum Riesen inn". Today, the site still serves as a hotel with a restaurant. Think of all the history in the walls here!
5. Visit Miltenberg Castle
Perhaps the biggest and most important attraction in Miltenberg is Miltenberg Castle. Located on a hill above the River Main, the castle can be seen from many points around the city. For a small fee, you can walk around the courtyard and enter the castle, where you can see a small historical exhibition and an art gallery.
You can also climb a high tower, and from here you can see, if possible yet more magnificent views of the city. In the picture below you can also see that you can look down on the castle itself.
6. see the city's medieval towers: Würzburger Tor and Mainzer Tor
Miltenberg is a city with medieval history, which is reflected in the old walls and towers. You can check out the high towers "Würzburger Tor" and "Mainzer Tor".
7. try beer or whiskey
In Miltenberg you can try both beer and whiskey. Here you will find the brewery "Brauhaus Faust" and the whiskey distillery "St. Killian".
8. Have dinner at Faust Braustuben
Maybe you want some food along with the beer? We had dinner at Faust Braustuben, which can be described as a German "Biergarten". The atmosphere here was really nice, with good service and a nice view of the river.
Peter started with a potato soup. This was followed by hamburgers for him and "spätzle" (South German pasta) with cheese, onions and salad for Helena. Very tasty and good!
9. Make a visit to a museum
There are some museums to visit in Miltenberg! You can check out the Pharmacy Museum (Apothekenmuseum, Hauptstrasse 116) or the Museum Stadt Miltenberg (Hauptstrasse 169-175).
10. Take a boat trip on the river Main
The River Main is stunningly beautiful, with its wide, mirror-like waters. Many long passenger boats pass here, and it is of course possible to join a tour. The Henneberger shipping company, for example, offers daily tours throughout the summer months.
11. Walk along the river Main.
Even if you don't feel like taking a boat trip, it's really nice to walk along the river Main. There are many historic buildings and restaurants here, and we also passed a lovely outdoor restaurant with beach chairs right on the water.

There are of course many different hotels and other accommodation options in Miltenberg to choose from. We visited the town by motorhome and stayed two nights at the campsite. Main Camping at Josef Wirth Strasse 1. An absolutely wonderful place!
We got a spot right next to the river and really enjoyed the view, and being able to sit and watch all the passenger boats chugging by. Also, the staff was very nice and helpful!
If you don't think you need to camp, there are also several car parks where you can park your campervan for free, without service. This city felt really welcoming to motorhomers!

Helena says:
As you say, it's hard to choose, but Miltenberg is a favourite! It's not only the half-timbered houses but also the river and the environment. This place became a favourite! And haha, yes, it's good that we eat our own food in the campervan sometimes (although spätzle is very good) 😉!
