Kokořín Castle in the Czech Republic
Kokořín Castle in the Czech Republic feels like a fairytale castle, perched on a hill in the middle of dramatic nature.

Visiting Kokořín Castle in the Czech Republic
A visit to Kokořín Castle is a nice destination. We drove here with the motorhome and parked in the car park just below the castle, for a fee. Then it was just to tackle all the stairs to get up to the castle.
You can first see the castle from the outside and walk around the courtyard. This is a real fairytale castle, reminiscent of stories, fairy tales and films.
Even before you reach the ticket office, you can look around some of the vaults and see photos of the castle's recent history.
After paying the entrance fee you can visit the tower. and a number of coolly decorated rooms. We got here late, and got stuck with a middle school class all wanting to buy souvenirs, so we ended up visiting the tower. But there are actually much more to see, in the form of beautifully decorated rooms!
Kokořín Castle in the Czech Republic - with 14th century history
The Kokořín castle was built in the first half of the 14th century by order of Hynek Berka z Dubé. During the Hussite wars it was badly damaged and fell into ruin. At the end of the 19th century, the ruin was bought by businessman Václav Špaček, who spent large sums of money reconstructing the castle under the supervision of knowledgeable historians.
The area around Kokořín Castle in the Czech Republic
The area around Kokořín Castle is very scenic, full of sandstone formations, beautiful lakes and charming little villages. We stopped the motorhome several times just to take photos.
Besides nature, there are many beautiful houses to discover, as well as interesting carvings, caves and reliefs in the mountains.
Walk 1: Pokličky
We went on two interesting hikes in the neighbourhood, the first of which was very card. We looked up "Pokličky" on the GPS and parked in the nearest car park. It is then only a 15-minute walk to the destination - though mostly consisting of stairs.
After a long series of steps, we could see what we had come for! There are very special rock formations here, shaped like "mushrooms" with hats.
The place is really fascinating to see, and it's well worth the walk up the stairs!
Walk 2: Romanov Labyrinth
Another hike we did was at the "Romanov Labyrinth". This hike takes around two hours and goes through beautiful nature, as well as to some exceptional places.
We started by going wrong! In the picture below we should have gone left, but we went right... Then it took some time before we got right! For those who want to do the same hike, here are the tips:
- Start at 50°27'06.8″N 14°37'21.5″E
- Start walking along the motorway in a northerly direction and turn left at the yellow sign.
- For the split in the photo below, select left.
Once we were in the right place, it was a really nice hike!
Here and there you will come across very special rock formations and exciting caves.
Camping Kokořín
So where can you stay with a motorhome or caravan? There are several campsites to choose from in the area and we chose Camping Kokořín, which is located right next to the castle of the same name. This is a relatively simple campsite, but we liked it!
We think it was the tranquillity and beautiful nature that made us like the place. One evening, a group of young people were camping next to us and we were worried that it would get busy, but we worried unnecessarily. As soon as they pitched their tents (which they did with tools they humbly borrowed from us) they were quiet as mice.

Beautiful! Moderately strenuous hike - except for all the stairs. Downhill okay, uphill puff, puff.
Then I am totally fascinated by the wood pattern on the roof of the house. I have never seen anything like it before. Incredibly delicious:-)

The roof is beautiful! We couldn't resist taking photos, even though it was "just" a normal residential building 😉.
