Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka is a dramatic gorge in Vetteberget, named after a visit by King Oscar II. The gorge is also known from the Ronja Rövardotter film, while Fjällbacka itself has become famous through Camilla Läckberg's series on the Fjällbacka murders.

The King's Gap in Fjällbacka
Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka is definitely worth a visit. We drove here with the camper van, parked in a regular car park, and set off to explore.
Kungsklyftan is located in Vetteberget in the centre of Fjällbacka, and is reached by stairs from Ingrid Bergmans Torg. Fjällbacka is located in the municipality of Tanum in Bohuslän.
The royal gap in Fjällbacka - and King Oscar II
In 1887, the gorge in Fjällbacka was visited by King Oscar II himself, who had his signature inscribed on a rock wall. After this, the gorge changed its name from Ramneklovan to Kungsklyftan.
The King's Gap in Fjällbacka - and Ronja Rövardotter.
Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka has been visited by more celebrities than King Oscar II. Some scenes in the film about Ronja Rövardotter were also filmed here. Kungsklyftan is in fact the place referred to in the film as the 'Wolf's Claw'. However, it should not be confused with the 'Hell Gap', which was filmed in a different location.
Visiting Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka
To visit Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka, you can go down to the centre of the town, by the water. There is a clear gate that leads to stairs up to the mountain. A small warning is also in place - in several languages - so you know that you are walking at your own risk among the rocks and stones.
Along the way you can stop from time to time for a nice view. Of course, you can imagine that the views will be... even better higher up, but it's still hard to resist the temptation to pick up the camera from time to time.
Then you come up to the dramatic divide. How fascinating it is that nature has created this! The gorge is high and narrow, and high above your head are the large wedged-in boulders. This is a place that offers a special experience!
View from the top of Mount Vette
After passing through Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka, you can continue up to the top of Vetteberget, via a number of sturdy wooden stairs. Up here you have a fantastic view of Fjällbacka and the surrounding islands.
If you want, you can hike the 4-kilometre-long "Vettebergsleden", which is part of the much longer Kuststigen Bohuslän.
It was both cloudy and rainy when we were here, and yet the top of Vetteberget offered a nice experience.
More to see and do in charming Fjällbacka
Fjällbacka is an incredibly charming little town, full of restaurants and cafés. We dropped by on a rainy day during the low season, but we're sure the outdoor seating is packed with tourists on sunny summer days. During autumn and winter, you're welcome indoors at the Bryggan restaurant.
Fjällbacka has also become famous for the Fjällbacka series by queen of crime Camilla Läckberg. Anyone who wants to can join a guided tour, where you will meet murder scenes, characters and events from the novels.
Ingrid Bergman also used to spend time in Fjällbacka. So the small town has several links to the world of film!
You can go on various boat trips in the archipelago around Fjällbacka.
There are also opportunities for hiking in beautiful natural areas. For example, you can experience the nature reserve on Hjärterön or Veddö nature reserve, which is located on a peninsula a few kilometres north of Fjällbacka.
If you like ancient history, we can also recommend a short stop at the Domarring in Åbrott. This large and well-made stone circle is a grave from the early Iron Age, about 2000 years old. Fascinating we thought!
Where can you live or stay with your campervan?
We first planned to stay in Fjällbacka with the campervan, but the seaside site we found in the CamperContact app seemed to be closed, temporarily or permanently. Other options are Fjällbacka camping or possibly a site/parking on Tanumsvägen. For our part, we instead continued to Grebbestad, where we spent the night at the Grebbestadfjorden campsite and at a car park at Sportshopen.

Yes, Kungsklyftan and the entire Vetteberget is a really nice experience. Also remember Dannholmen in the archipelago just outside Fjällbacka, where Ingrid Bergman had her house.
