Kvarngården in Knivsta is a local heritage centre and caravan park run by Knivsta Hembygdsgille. Among other things, a very popular midsummer celebration is usually organised here. Motorhomes and caravans are also welcomed to the farm's beautiful and cosy site.

Kvarngården in Knivsta
Kvarngården in Knivsta is a lovely local community centre on the site of a former watermill. The mill itself is no longer there, but instead several other charming old buildings from the neighbourhood have been moved here.

There is also a car park here today, where both motorhomes and caravans are welcome.

Kvarngården is located in Knivsta, just south of Uppsala.
Kvarngården in Knivsta - homestead with well-preserved houses
The well-preserved old wooden houses shine beautifully red in the autumn sun when we visit. We meet Kjell Eriksson, chairman of the Knivsta Hembygdsgille, who happily shows us around.

It was originally Kjell's father who was involved in the association, and when Kjell tells us about it, we realise that he had not really planned to take on the main responsibility for the association himself. "But it is close to my heart", he says, and this is also clear when he shows us around the area.
Knivsta Hembygdsgille's purpose is to protect and preserve the local environment and cultural heritage and pass it on to new Knivsta residents and future generations.
On the website of the Swedish Local Heritage Association, you can read that Knivsta Hembygdsgille's purpose is "to protect and care for the local environment and cultural heritage and to pass this on to new Knivsta residents and future generations".
We ask Kjell about the re-growth of the organisation and he tells us that it is a challenge, just like in many other similar organisations. He believes that many young people want the farm to be preserved, but it is more difficult to find younger people who are prepared to put in the time and commitment.

So far, however, this does not seem to be an imminent concern. Knivsta Hembygdsgille is a living association that organises well-attended events every year. Most people are attracted to the big midsummer celebration, when around 2000 people take part in dancing around the midsummer pole, fiddler music, tombola, ice cream parlour and pentathlon.
Almost as popular is "Kvarngårdens Dag", which is usually organised at the end of the summer, with pony rides, vintage tractor rides and all sorts of other activities. There are also a number of other events throughout the year, such as a tailgate auction. We understand from Kjell that the association members are often very busy, with everything to be planned and prepared.

A tour of the fine old houses at Kvarngården
Kjell takes us on a tour of the fine old houses on Kvarngården, and we start in the fine residential building.

Inside the house, the floorboards are wide and there is plenty of charming old furniture and artefacts. "Do you know what this is?", Kjell asks, pointing to a round saucepan-like thing with a crank (small picture to the right below). No, we don't. 'A separator,' says Kjell, explaining that the device was once used to separate the cream from the milk.

Today the house can be rented for various private parties. As we speak, two young guys come knocking on the door. They have rented the house for a Halloween party in the evening and want to look around. Kjell gives some practical information and asks the boys to take care of the house, which they promise to do.

We continue our tour to the cute little smithy.

Stepping in here is a bit like travelling back in time. It becomes even more vivid when a real blacksmith is here and shows how the work is done, which has happened on some occasions.

Adjacent to the forge is another small cottage, where we can take a look inside. This house is not used much, but there are some charming things here. We particularly like the super cute crocheted cakes!

RV park at Kvarngården
Kvarngården has been used for a few years now as a parking space for motorhomes and caravans. It was Kjell, who drives a motorhome himself, who came up with the idea. In the beginning, the other members of the association were a little hesitant about the new proposal, but now that they see how well it works - and that the income helps the association to finance the maintenance of the buildings - everyone is very happy about the mobile guests.

This is a very nice place to park. You stand on a large lawn, where you can park as you like. Here you have a lovely view of the surrounding green nature areas, and the place is ideal for those who want to walk in nature or walk their dog.
There is electricity for around 20 motorhomes or caravans, and the large grass pitch can accommodate even more vehicles. There are also fresh and clean toilets (including an accessible one), showers, an outdoor sink, fresh water and latrine emptying. In other words, nothing is missing.
If you are in the neighbourhood with a motorhome or caravan, we highly recommend staying here! The caravan park is open approximately from Easter every year until the end of October. You can always check the app "Ställplatser", where Kjell usually updates with current information.

Thanks for the tip. Looks really nice.
May check if it is possible to stand there in early November when we go to Knivsta to change the motorhome. We arrive the evening before the change and have then travelled just over 40 miles so it would be a perfect place to stand.
