Swedish Bohuslänsvägen

The Swedish Bohuslän Road is a FREEDOMtravel Theme Road that runs from the Öckerö Islands in the Gothenburg archipelago to Strömstad on the border with Norway. You can follow it from any direction, or pick your favourite part (your favourite spots) in the middle. This is an idea to make it easier for you to embark on a little adventure. Happy travelling!

1. Öckerö Islands

The Öckerö Islands in the Gothenburg archipelago consist of around ten islands, four of which are connected by bridges: Fotö, Öckerö, Hönö and Hälsö. The islands offer a really lovely environment with beautiful cliffs, picturesque fishing villages and small red cottages.

2. Bohus Fortress

Bohus Fortress has been defended by Norwegians, Danes and Swedes and has been besieged a total of 14 times, a Nordic record. Today you can come here to wander around the ruins and imagine the dramatic battles of history.

3. Carlsten Fortress on Marstrand

Carlsten Fortress on Marstrand is an exciting attraction, offering fascinating historical settings and interesting stories, such as the famous prisoner Lasse-Maja. You can wander around on your own or join a guided tour.

4. Tjörn

Tjörn is a large and scenic island surrounded by a large number of smaller islands, islets and skerries. Here you can visit the charming town of Skärhamn, see art at the Nordic Watercolour Museum and visit the Pilane sculpture park. You can also take excursions to various islands, such as Åstol and Dyrön.

Starting from Rönnäng on Tjörn, you can take a cosy trip to the beautiful island of Dyrön, where you'll find a lovely hiking trail, swimming spots and places to eat.

5. Orust

Orust is a large west coast island that offers a wonderful environment with cliffs, islets and skerries. You can visit charming Mollösund, visit Henån, take the ferry to Malö or make boat trips to islands such as Gullholmen, Härmanö and Käringön. We can also recommend MUMA Mural paintingswhich tells the story of strong women who once lived on Orust.

6. Uddevalla on the Swedish Bohuslän road

Uddevalla is often called "the heart of Bohuslän" and offers everything from wonderful nature experiences to adventure and good food. It is interesting to visit Bohuslän Museum and the ruin Tureborgen. Don't miss the beautiful seafront promenade and Sweden's oldest seaside resort Gustafsberg.

7. Hafsten Resort & Camping

8. Skaftö

Skaftö, or Skaftölandet, is a charming island on the west coast, where you can visit the towns of Grundsund and Fiskebäckskil. Here you will find a lovely west coast environment and many cosy restaurants.

9. Lysekil

Lysekil is a west coast gem with a lot to offer. One of the main attractions here is the House of the Sea, where you can see fish and learn about marine life. We also highly recommend a visit to the Stångehuvud nature reserve.

10. King's Harbour

Kungshamn is a less well-known but cosy neighbour of Smögen. There are nice swimming spots and charming fishing huts. You can also take boat trips to the island of Hollö or to Smögen.

11. Smögen on the Swedish Bohuslänsvägen.

Welcome to the seafood mecca! Smögen is a picturesque and popular summer destination, known for the Smögen pier and all the colourful boathouses. Here you can shop for clothes, enjoy seafood in restaurants and go on nice hiking trails.

12. Ramsvik country

Ramsvikslandet is part of Sotenäset and was a peninsula until the Sote Canal was excavated. Today Ramsvikslandet is an island, accessible from the mainland via a swing bridge. Here you will find beautiful nature and several hiking trails. Do not miss visiting the exciting King Tryggve's grave.

13. Hunnebostrand

Hunnebostrand is a real archipelago idyll. You can stroll in the cosy harbour, sit in restaurants, walk around Sankt Göran's Island and check out the artwork at Udden Sculpture. Or why not visit Hunneboklyftan or Smögen Whisky?

TIPS: Ark of the North

From Hunnebostrand it's not too far to take a trip to Nordens Ark zoo. The park works to preserve endangered species, and you can see some 60 different species from around the world.

14. bow beach

Bovallstrand is a peaceful coastal community with a history dating back to the 16th century. Among other things, sprat has been fished here, and the town has also served as a shipping harbour for granite. Today there is a bathing area, an ice cream parlour and a restaurant.

15. Hamburgsund

Hamburgsund is a cosy little town with high cliffs, boats, red cottages and an abundance of seafood. Here you can hang out on outdoor terraces, swim, take boat trips and feast on the delights of the sea.

16. The King's Gap in Fjällbacka

Kungsklyftan in Fjällbacka is a dramatic gorge in Vetteberget, named after a visit by King Oscar II. The gorge is also known from the Ronja Rövardotter film, while Fjällbacka itself has become famous through Camilla Läckberg's series on the Fjällbacka murders.

17. Tanum rock carving site (Unesco)

The rock carving area in Tanum is a World Heritage Site with over 500 rock carving sites, which together contain tens of thousands of images. The images were carved in the Bronze Age, between 1700 BC and 500 BC. You can see the rock carvings, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in several locations. You can also visit the Vitlycke Museum.

18. grebbestad

Grebbestad is another charming west coast town. Here you can dine in restaurants with sea views and visit beautiful natural areas such as the Monk's Church. You can also take various boat trips, ranging from sightseeing to lobster or oyster safaris.

19. Tjurpannan Nature Reserve

Tjurpannan Nature Reserve, located just north of Grebbestad, is a fantastic place to enjoy the tranquillity, hike in an idyllic setting or perhaps snap some nice photos.

20. Strömstad on the Swedish Bohuslänsvägen

Strömstad is Sweden's most westerly town, located near the border with Norway. The city offers several art experiences, including Strömstad's delicious street art. You can also see ancient monuments or take an exciting excursion to the Koster Islands.

TIPS: Koster Islands

The Koster Islands consist of Nordkoster and Sydkoster, separated by a narrow strait. Here you can take a boat trip, hike, cycle, swim, visit Naturum Kosterhavet and go to restaurants. Around the Koster Islands archipelago is the Kosterhavet National Park, full of unique marine environments and species.
