Svenska slottsvägen
Svenska Skånevägen is a FREEDOMtravel Theme Road that runs from Salsta Castle in Uppland to Tullgarn Castle in Södermanland. You can follow it from any direction, or pick your favourite part (your favourite spots) in the middle. This is an idea to make it easier for you to go on a little adventure. Happy travelling!

1. Salsta castle on Svenska slottsvägen.
Salsta Castle is a beautiful baroque castle from the 17th century, not far from Uppsala in Uppland. The castle was inhabited until 1976, and is exciting because rooms have been preserved from several different centuries of the castle's history. Here you can listen to spooky ghost stories or take a guided tour of the castle's halls.
2. Skokloster Castle
Skokloster Castle is a magnificent baroque castle on Lake Mälaren. It is the largest private palace ever built in Sweden. Today it serves as a state museum with a parade hall, large collections of artefacts, a castle park and a castle café.
3rd Wenngarn Castle
Wenngarn Castle in Sigtuna is a beautiful castle, once built by Magnus de la Gardie. Here you can stroll in the beautiful castle park, or perhaps have a coffee or lunch at the bakery. It is also close to the charming Sigtuna, Sweden's oldest city.
4. Rosersberg Castle on Svenska slottsvägen.
Rosersberg Palace is a royal palace in Sigtuna, north of Stockholm. This castle is one of the eleven royal castles in Sweden and has been home to Karl XIV Johan Bernadotte and his wife Desideria. Today you can stay at the castle hotel, go on a guided tour or discover the surrounding natural areas.
5. Bogesund Castle
Bogesund Castle in Vaxholm is a beautiful 17th-century castle in the Bogesund area of the Stockholm archipelago. In the summer, guided tours of the castle are organised. There are also fine hiking trails in the area.
6. Ulriksdal Castle
Ulriksdal Palace is one of the eleven royal palaces in Sweden and offers a beautiful setting with a palace park, orangery and commercial garden. Here you can go on a guided tour, stroll around the beautiful surroundings, buy flowers or perhaps stop for a coffee.
7. The Royal Palace in Stockholm
The Royal Palace in Stockholm is the official residence of H.M. the King and is the venue for much of the monarchy's representation. In addition, the palace is also open to tourists. You can visit the representation floors and also the various museums, such as the Livrustkammaren and the Tre Kronor Palace.
8. Tyresö Castle on Svenska slottsvägen.
Tyresö Castle is beautifully situated by Kalvfjärden in Tyresö, just south of Stockholm. It was in the 1630s that Councillor Gabriel Oxenstierna inherited medieval Tyresö, and built a castle and a church. Guided tours are sometimes given here. There is also a café and beautiful natural areas.
9. Drottningholm Castle
Drottningholm Palace was built in the 17th century and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The palace was built after French models by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, on behalf of Queen Hedvig Eleonora. You can visit the palace itself, stroll in the park and see the beautiful palace theatre.
10. Taxinge Castle
Taxinge Castle, or Taxinge-Näsby Castle, is located in a beautiful setting by Lake Mälaren. The castle is also known as the "Kakslottet" because there is a café here that goes all in for baked goods. There is also a beautiful castle park and the possibility of organising a party or conference.
11. Gripsholm Castle
Gripsholm Castle is a magnificent and regal castle by Lake Mälaren. The rooms are still here from the time of the Vasa kings and there is also one of Europe's most well-preserved 18th century theatres. In addition, the surroundings are really nice.
12. Sundbyholm Castle
Sundbyholm Castle has a history as a monastery and royal estate. Today you can come here for hotel accommodation, conferences and weddings, but you can also come here to visit Sundbyholm's guest harbour, where there is both a restaurant and a parking space for motorhomes.
13. Tidö castle on the Swedish castle road
Tidö Castle in Västerås is a beautiful 17th century castle. If you come here during the summer season, you can book a guided tour of the parade floor, or visit the castle's bicycle and motorbike museum. There are also two cool church ruins nearby.
14. Strömsholm Castle
Strömsholm Castle is a royal castle in the neighbourhood of Västerås. The beautiful castle was once built by Hedvig Eleonora on the site of a former Vasa castle. Today, many people associate the castle with horses and equestrian sports, and during the summer you can usually join a guided tour.
15. Stora Sundby Castle
Stora Sundby Castle is a fantastic fairytale castle decorated with turrets and towers, beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Hjälmaren. The castle is privately owned and cannot usually be visited inside. However, visitors are welcome to the castle park and to walk in the beautiful deer enclosure.
16. Örebro Castle
Örebro Castle is a magnificent castle that was built in the Middle Ages as a simple defence castle with a prison, and during the Vasa period was rebuilt into an impressive royal castle with large towers. Today the castle serves as the residence of the county governor. Parts of the castle are also open to tourists and one of the towers houses Lill-Anna's Castle Café.
17. Läckö Castle on Svenska slottsvägen (Swedish Castle Road)
Reflecting beautifully in Lake Vänern with its spires and towers, Läckö Castle feels almost like a castle in a storybook. It was Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie who built the castle in the 17th century. Today, the public is welcome in both the rooms and the gardens. Not far from here you will find the cosy fishing harbour Spiken.
18. Gunnebo Castle and Gardens
Gunnebo castle and gardens are located just south of Gothenburg and can be visited all year round. Here you will find a beautiful castle building, a nice park, lovely nature areas and a restaurant and café. If you get the right day and book in advance, guided tours are also available.
19. Tjolöholm Castle
Tjolöholm Castle was built at the turn of the century by the Swedish-British couple James Fredrik and Blanche Dickson. The castle is a stunningly beautiful building, with sumptuous architecture and exciting technical amenities. In addition to seeing the interior of the castle, you can stroll through the gardens and visit the beautiful Allmoge village.
20. Krapperup Castle
Krapperup Castle is a Scanian estate dating back to the 14th century. Today there is a beautiful castle from the 16th century, a lovely castle park, a nice café and an art gallery. At the Kulla Peninsula, where the castle is located, you can also visit Kullaberg Nature Reserve, Höganäs, Mölle and various vineyards.
21. Sofiero Castle and gardens
Sofiero Castle and Castle Garden in Helsingborg offers a fantastic environment with intense greenery, flower beds and a fabulous castle. Several royals have stayed here, and today both the castle and the garden are open to the public.
22) Landskrona Castle
Landskrona Castle, or Landskrona Citadel as it is also known, is a well-preserved fortress from 1559, surrounded by double moats. Among the prisoners here was the angel maker Hilda Nilsson, who in 1917 was convicted of seven infanticide and one manslaughter. It is most interesting when you go on a guided tour.
23. Malmöhus castle on Svenska slottsvägen.
Malmöhus Castle is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic region. The castle has served as a residence for a number of county lords, and later also as a prison. Today, the castle is open to visitors. You will also find a number of interesting museums here.
24th Kronovall Wine Castle
Kronovall Castle is a stunningly beautiful baroque castle in Österlen, Skåne. Today the castle functions as a wine castle, which means a great focus on wine. There is a large wine cellar and wine tastings are organised as well as castle weekends with a wine focus.
25. Bäckaskog Castle
Monks lived at Bäckaskog as early as the 13th century, and in the 16th century the monastery was converted into a fortified castle. Today the castle serves as a hotel and conference centre, and various parties and events are organised here. There is also a restaurant and a beautiful castle park.
26. Kalmar Castle
Kalmar Castle has an 800-year history, but is nevertheless a well-preserved and beautiful castle. It is very interesting to visit the inside of the castle and hear about its history, but it is also cosy to enjoy the lovely surroundings of the park. In addition, the historic city squid, with Kvarnholmen, well worth a visit.
27th Teleborg Castle
Teleborg Castle is a fairy-tale, beautiful and inviting castle in the Växjö, built by Count Fredrik Bonde of Björnö at the end of the 19th century. You are welcome to stay at the hotel, eat at the restaurant or café, or just stroll around the park and its surroundings.
28. Vadstena Castle on the Swedish Castle Road
Vadstena Castle was built as a defence facility by King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. During the reign of Johan III, the castle was transformed from a defensive fortress to a continental Renaissance palace. Visiting the interior of the castle is very interesting.
29. Ekenäs Castle
Ekenäs Castle is a beautiful fairytale castle from the 17th century, which you can find in Linköping municipality. The castle has an interesting history and is home to no less than seven ghosts. During the high season there are guided tours and knightly games, and in the autumn you can try to catch a ghost walk.
30. Finspång Castle
Finspång Castle is beautifully situated on an island and is surrounded by the castle garden, an orangery and a gazebo. Today, the castle is owned by the Siemens company, but it also has an interesting history of use. Although the castle itself is not open, the castle garden is welcoming. There are also several museums.
31. Ericsberg Baroque Castle
Ericsberg Castle is located in the centre of Södermanland and is considered one of Sweden's most beautiful baroque castles. The castle is privately owned, but the castle garden is open to visitors on certain days of the week. The garden contains a scale replica of the world-famous labyrinth from Hampton Court outside London.
32. Tullgarn castle on Svenska slottsvägen
Tullgarn Castle has been a royal pleasure palace since the 1770s, and the last royals to spend summers at Tullgarn Castle were King Gustaf V and Queen Victoria, at the end of the 19th century. During the high season, guided tours are occasionally organised. It is also nice to stroll in the park.
