Finally, we can travel as usual again! After several years of not being able to - or daring to - travel due to restrictions, almost all countries have now released all restrictions.
Not being able to travel has created a desire to "make up" for lost years of travelling, and there is now a trend for more and more people to tick a dream destination off their bucket list. Doing what is known in Swedish as "Once in a lifetime travel". This is one of five travel trends for 2023 that the charter company Ving sees in its recently published trend report.
More people plan trips to the Maldives and Mauritius
Dream trips can take many forms, from treating yourself to an extra good hotel room or taking an interesting trip within Sweden, such as a trip to ice hotel in Kiruna. But what most Swedes dream of is travelling to chalk-white beaches, lined with palm trees and turquoise sea. Yes, it is the Maldives that most people dream of in Vings' survey, closely followed by Mauritius.
At the same time as this report is released, I have just launched my new podcast about dream travel - Drömresepodden. A podcast with inspiration and facts about real dream destinations - which are on many Swedes' bucket lists. And the first season of Drömreseopodden is about the very destination that most Swedes dream of - the Maldives.
In one episode of the podcast you can hear more about Vings Trend Report, where Vings' Head of Communications (who still has the Maldives on his own bucket list).
Two episodes feature interviews with travel agents specialising in the Maldives - who know exactly what to look for in order to find the right trip for your dream holiday, how much a trip costs and how to travel to the Maldives in the cheapest way possible.
In the podcast you will also meet Hussain Afeef who started the Maldives' first resort in the 70s and today runs 10 different spectacular resorts in the Maldives.
Just like on Netflix, the podcast is divided into seasons of short episodes, released simultaneously. So now the first five episodes are out. You can find The dream travel podcast in all places where podcasts are available - and also available to listen to online here.
Which destination is at the top of your bucket list? Have you been to the Maldives? Feel free to comment!

Fun to read! We first visited the Maldives in the late 1970s and the next time in the early 1980s. Today it does not attract so much. But Alaska and Antarctica attract more. Fun with your podcast. Good luck to you.
I have probably done the dream trip that went around the world in 2005 and was gone for three months.

Have been to 7 different reporters in the Maldives and also visited one three times.
Fantastically nice but you should stay all inclusive because otherwise it will be very expensive!

Have never been to the Maldives but it is very high on my bucket list, along with the Seychelles. Will take and listen to the podcast!

Was just there and stayed on a regular local island, surprisingly beautiful and lovely. Read a lot before and became almost sceptical when you read about garbage, garbage and strict rules but did not recognise that description at all when we got there. So they have done a lot it seems. The local islands are a really nice and cosy but of course you miss a beer from time to time;).
