Beautiful islands in Sweden
Isn't there something special about islands? When we are travelling and see that there is an island nearby, we always want to go there. It's not always possible - sometimes it's the wrong time of year and other times there's no time - but if it's possible, we like to visit an island. Here are ten beautiful islands in Sweden that we have visited. Read also about beautiful islands in Europe.
1. Käringön (Bohuslän)
We visited Käringön last summer, and we really fell in love with this island. This island, which is located far out in the sea, is both car and bicycle free and is perfect for a day trip. On the island you will find a charming harbour, several nice swimming spots and a bunch of cosy restaurants.
2. Ven (Skåne)
The scenic island of Ven is located off the west coast of Skåne. Here you can, among other things, cycle and experience the Ven's backafall nature reserve. You can also try Hvenglass or whiskey at Spirit of Hven. While you're here, you won't want to miss the exciting Tycho Brahe Museum.
3. Gräsö (Uppland)
Gräsö is a scenic island located just outside Öregrund in Roslagen. The island, which is surrounded by beautiful cliffs, has several nature reserves. Here you will also find camping, hostels and a beautiful old church. You can easily get to the island by free car ferry from Öregrund.
4. Öland
When talking about beautiful islands in Sweden, it's hard not to mention Öland. Sweden's second largest island offers a beautiful yet different landscape, with Stora Alvaret and the southern tip of Öland. There are also incredibly beautiful beaches as well as ancient castles and other historical sights.
5. Kållandsö (Västergötland)
Kållandsö is the second largest island in Lake Vänern after Torsö. The island is best known for Läckö Castle, which looks like a fairytale castle and is incredibly beautiful by the water. On the island you will also find Spiken's fishing harbour, with boats, sheds and the opportunity to buy and enjoy seafood.
6. Koster Islands (Bohuslän)
The Koster Islands are our favourite of all the beautiful islands in Sweden. Syd- and Nordkoster are located just outside Strömstad, close to the border with Norway. Here you can cycle, hike, swim or visit nice restaurants. Here you will also find Kosterhavet National Park - Sweden's first marine national park.
7. Aspö (Blekinge)
Aspö is located just outside Karlskrona and is one of the islands in the Blekinge archipelago. You can get here by car ferry from Karlskrona and a good idea might be to bring a bicycle. On the island you can see Drottningskär's castle. If you want to stay overnight, you can stay at the charming Lotstornet Aspö.
8. Visingsö (Småland)
Visingsö is the largest island in Lake Vättern, and one of the most beautiful islands in Sweden. You can easily get here by ferry from Gränna, and once there you can enjoy the quiet and peaceful environment. Here you can also see Visingsborg Castle ruins and Näs Castle ruins, or perhaps familiarise yourself with the island's alpacas.
9. Fjäderholmarna (Stockholm archipelago)
Fjäderholmarna is the closest archipelago island to Stockholm and the boat journey takes only 20 minutes. In summer, this is an extremely popular island, with many tourists visiting the restaurants. You can also sunbathe on the rocks and enjoy the picturesque and beautiful environment.
10. Dyrön (Bohuslän)
Dyrön, or Stora Dyrön as the island is actually called, is a lovely and scenic archipelago island just outside Tjörn in Bohuslän. Here you can hike along the beautiful Dyröleden trail. On the way you can stop in both Nordhamnen and Sydhamnen, where you will find cosy restaurants.

Fun with Swedish islands as a theme. Have visited the islands you have included and also those on your "list". But it has been for many years. Stokholm's outer archipelago has lots of islands; both the northern and southern parts and they are best reached by your own boat or Waxholm's boat.
But I would add Söderarm on the border with the Åland Sea. Harstena, in the gryts archipelago is definitely worth a visit. And in Ångermanland, in addition to Ulvön, Mjältön and Högbonden - as well as Hemsö, near Härnösand. The high coast has many beautiful islands.
Also thought of Alnön outside Sundsvall.

Thanks for the tip Minett! There really are a lot of islands in the Stockholm archipelago and we have visited far too few of them. Peter has probably visited more than me, but a long time ago.

We also think there is something special about islands and like to visit them if we can. Now we can see that we have many more to experience as we have only visited half of your ten tips and a couple of those on your wish list.
If we were to list some of our favourites that have not been mentioned, it would be Hållö and Bohus Malmön on the west coast and Stora Karlsö, which is magical when all the orchids are in bloom.
In 2022 we finally visited Gotska Sandön and Ven and on this year's wish list is Blå Jungfrun and islands in the Blekinge archipelago.

At the 2022 book sale, I came home with a book entitled "101 Swedish islands you must see before you die". It contains everything from small islands in e.g. Roslagen and various archipelagos to sights on Öland and Gotland, what a source of inspiration!

I recognise the name of many islands, but have not visited so many! Have quite recently made my first visits to both Gotland and Öland!
Well, have visited Fjäderholmarna and Sandhamn anyway. Norröra we have visited actually, thanks to the fact that we have a summer cottage on Rådmansö in Roslagen, we saw "Uncle Melker's house from Saltkråkan there on Norröra!".
Happy New Year!
