Travelling and long-distance adventures are great. But we don't think everyday luxury in your neighbourhood should be downplayed. We brightened up a rough weekday in February by travelling to Trelleborg and staying at Hotel Dannegården.
Trelleborg
Trelleborg is Sweden's southernmost city and a major port city. There are ferries to five different destinations in Europe (Germany, Poland and Lithuania). We have both spent a lot of time in Trelleborg as we have worked here for many years. However, we have never stayed in a hotel here before.
Beaches
Visitors to Trelleborg on a fine day often want to visit the beach. The municipality has many different beaches for different purposes and wishes. The beach in Smygehuk, Sweden's southernmost headland, is one of our favourite beaches in Trelleborg municipality.
Trelleborg
If you are interested in the Viking Age, we recommend you visit the reconstruction of the Viking castle Trelleborgen. A visit to Trelleborgen means travelling back in time, to the 9th century to be exact. It is interesting to get an insight into Viking society and learn about what life was like at that time and what Viking battles were like.
If you visit Trellborgen in the summertime, you can try out different Viking games and try other chores that were done at that time. If you are in Trelleborg on the second weekend in July, we recommend that you visit Trelleborgen. Then you can experience a Viking wedding with many Vikings, go to the Viking market and see the "Battle of Trelleborgen".
Hotel Dannegården
The reason why we went to Trelleborg this time was not to work, be on the beach or visit Trelleborgen. We went to Trelleborg to stay at the city's finest hotel, Hotel Dannegården.
The hotel is centrally located and consists of 26 newly renovated rooms. The rooms are named after different cities in the world, and what better way for Travelsis to stay in a hotel?
Once we have checked in and enter our room, called London, we are greeted with bubbly, fruit and chocolate. That kind of welcome really makes a hotel stay worthwhile.
We arrive at the hotel just before 18:00, so we start with dinner. The menu consists of four different dishes. Luckily there are not more because we have a hard time choosing - all dishes sound equally good. In the end, we decide to eat sirloin steak and char. For dessert we eat Italian meringue with lemoncurd and vanilla ice cream.
The nice girl who checked us in is also our waitress. She tells us about the history of Hotel Dannegården. We who are curious find it very interesting. The hotel is a lovely villa from the 1910s that has been owned by the Ivholt family for 10 years. The hotel is named after its founder, Kaj Dannegård.
Last year a lovely pool was built in the garden. We are looking forward to swimming in it if we return in spring or summer. Now it was the hot jacuzzi that attracted us. Here we sat for a long time and enjoyed before we finished with a sauna. All guests can borrow a bathrobe, slippers and towels, so guests do not have to bring their own.
Dannegården's interior design is very light and Scandinavian mixed with old style. We are particularly fond of the dining room, which feels both antique and cosy.
At Hotel Dannegården it is also possible to buy jewellery, furnishings, food and a few other things. When we were here there was a sale, so we had the opportunity to shop at a really good price.
What an energy boost it is to make an evening of it in the middle of the week. An ordinary Thursday became a fantastic Thursday thanks to our visit to the lovely Dannegården, a short distance from our homes. As we sit and eat breakfast, we realise that we should try to be even better than we already are at brightening up grey, mundane weekdays. How are you? Are you good at adding luxury to everyday life?
