To Åland with Finnlines

We went to Åland with Finnlines from Kapellskär, off Norrtälje north of Stockholm. The line runs from Kapellskär to Långnäs (Åland). The needle of mercyand when you book a ticket to Åland, you get off halfway.

We should actually have taken the morning ferry, but since it suddenly turned out that Peter was going to a concert with his brother the night before, we had to reschedule and take the evening ferry.

View from the ferry, towards the harbour in Kapellskär.

Taking the evening ferry is, of course, extremely impractical when you have to get off halfway - that is, you have to get off in the middle of the night - but that's what happened ... The tip for anyone else who wants to travel with Finnlines to Åland is, of course, to take the morning ferry!

So far, the route is operated by Finnline's older vessels, but soon, that is, in the autumn, Finnline's new Superstar vessels will arrive. Then it will be a completely different experience to travel this route!

On board Finnlines

As I said, it is still the older ships that are running right now, so it may not be such a big idea to tell you how it is on board. Anyway, we had a nice cabin with windows and there is a restaurant and bar. Quite ok then!

But when the new ship arrives in the autumn, it will be a different story. On Finnline's new ships, which each accommodate 1100 passengers and focus on sustainability, there are several restaurants, spa area, comfortable workplaces and lounges as well as areas for shopping. We look forward to travelling on these!

Arriving in Åland

We arrived in Åland in the middle of the night and pulled into Gröna Uddens Camping in Mariehamn, having been informed of our odd arrival time.

Since then we have had time to look around a lot in Åland. We are travelling on our own in the motorhome, but have a cooperation with Visit Åland, which has booked some restaurants for us and given us suggestions on what to see and do.

We are really behind with the reports here at FREEDOMtravel (we must also have time to tell you about the wonderful High Coast in the Ångermanland!). If you want, you can follow our journey on Instagram, at @freedomtravelnews. And of course, soon there will be reports here too!

In the beautiful Sjökvarteret neighbourhood in Mariehamn.

Until then, we can tell you about a funny discovery we made when we visited the Åland Cultural History Museum in Mariehamn. Here we saw a bunch of fossils, and since I (Helena) know that my father, who is no longer alive but was a professor of palaeozoology at the Natural History Museum, was involved in Åland fossils, I read a little more carefully.

And yes, indeed, at the bottom it said that the fossil collection was developed under the guidance of my dad. Great to see this collection at last!

Best this week

Best thing this week? Travelling around Åland of course! It was cold when we arrived, but it has been sunny and nice all the time. So far, we have experienced Åland as calm and scenic with charming fishing huts, lots of locally produced food and beautiful flowering apple trees everywhere. We look forward to telling you more about our experiences on these lovely islands!

Your turn, what can you highlight as positive from your week?

Apple trees are blooming everywhere in Åland right now.

The week ahead

We continue to discover Åland and then head to mainland Finland. This weekend we will publish two more reports on the High Coast - two places we really want to tell you about. Then we'll start talking about Åland. Don't miss it!
