Visiting Moominworld in Naantali, Finland, is wonderfully cosy and nostalgic, especially if you have a relationship with the Moomins and their world. We went here one day and walked around among hemulas, hattifnas and other mysterious fairy tale creatures.
Table of contents
Moominworld in Naantali
Moominworld in Naantali is a theme park built around Tove Jansson's Moomins and their friends in Moominvalley. The park is primarily aimed at families with children, but it is of course also nice to stroll around as an adult Moomin lover.
Moominworld is located on the island of Kailo in Naantali in south-west Finland, accessible by a short footbridge from the town.
The Moomin world
In Moominworld, you can meet Moomintroll, Moominmamma and Moominpappa, as well as the other characters in Moominvalley. Which of the following characters do you remember best?
- Little My - the one-eyed little prankster with a red dress
- Sniff - Moomintroll's cowardly mate
- Hemulen - the rule lover who collects stamps and botany
- Snus mummies - the philosophical vagabond and adventurer
- Mrs Snorkell - the snotty girl who likes to look in the mirror
- Stinky - the lawless and smelly figure
- The Witch - an old lady with spiders and snakes
- Too-ticki - the sensible and practical in a striped jumper
- Filipino - she who believes in order and discipline
- Hattifnattarna - those who move in clusters and are electrified by thunder.
- Emma the theatre rat - cleaning the theatre
- Tofslan and Vifslan - are indistinguishable and talk in a strange way
- Mymla - Little Me's imaginative big sister
- Ninny - the invisible child
- Dronten Edvard - a purple dragon without wings
Visiting Moominworld
Moominworld is open during the summer and you can buy a one-day ticket, a two-day ticket or a season pass. The price will be slightly lower if you buy a ticket online instead of at the entrance.
There is a special Moomin car park, from where there are shuttle buses to the park, but it is also possible to park elsewhere. We found a free spot in the Kopparberget car park, and walked from there.
Magic bracelet
When you enter the area, you can choose to put on a 'magic bracelet' if you wish. For this to work, you must also download the "Muuimaailma" app. Once in the app, you can choose Swedish as the language, but the steps before that were in Finnish, so the staff had to help ... which they were happy to do!
What is the magic bracelet used for? Well, you hold it against shell icons here and there in the park, and things happen ...
Emma Theatre
At the beginning of the park is the Emma Theatre where the Moomin Theatre is performed. The plays are performed in Finnish, but the lines are written in English and Swedish above the stage.
Moominhouse
One of the main attractions in the park is the Moominhouse. Here you can step inside and see how the Moomin family lives.
Exploring a fairytale world
Otherwise, there are many different places to discover in the park. You can, for example, visit Sniff's house, Hemulen's house, the Witch's house, the Fairy Tale Path, Vilopark, the Labyrinth and many other places.
In many of the houses you can meet and talk to the different Moomin characters.
In the Cave of the Hatty Nights, you can see when a thunderstorm is coming, and when the Hatty Nights are suddenly electrified ...
Other sites include the bathhouse, where Edvard the dodo rests, and the rapids with the suspension bridge.
Restaurants, cafes and shops
There are also very many food outlets in the park. We couldn't count all the restaurants, burger joints, cafés and ice cream parlours, but there are many. How about Mum's Kitchen, Snork's Potato Factory, the Invention Café or Hemulen's Ice Cream?
You can also get fun face paintings or shop for souvenirs and toys, with Moominvalley motifs of course ...
More to see in the neighbourhood
