We continue our journey northwards along the Finnish coast, discovering one gem after another. At the same time, we have had the opportunity to do some work on the motorhome and fix some broken things. Happy Friday!

Continuing to travel along the Finnish coast
We have now reported on 6 destinations along the Finnish coast:
In fact, we have travelled further north (which you can see if you follow us on Instagram at @freedomtravelnews) and we have several articles in the pipeline.
In general, we can say that the coastline is very beautiful and that we have been pleasantly surprised by the nature, the tranquillity, the people, the charming wooden towns, the sandy beaches and all the small cosy museums... We really recommend travelling this route by motorbike, car or camper van!
Finnish pigs
You have to try some specialities and delicacies along the way too! Several people have written that we have to taste "Finnish pigs", so we did that at Brödhörnet in Jakobstad. There was also a Jaffa from Finnish Hartwall. Yes we agree, very good! Inside the donut hides, among other things, jam!
Have you tried Finnish pigs? Or heard about them?
Motorhome fix
Our motorhome is a few years old, and although we've refreshed and updated it time and time again, it's always something that go wrong. Most of the problems are manageable, but when things pile up you realise that you have to do something. We made a visit to CaravanLandia in Karlebyand it turned out to be a hit.
The accessories department may not look like much, but there was a lot here. In addition, we got super good help (in Swedish) from a guy who looked up everything possible and impossible that we wanted in the warehouse.
Some of the things he found proved invaluable to us. For example, we got at last grab a new lid to top up the water. The lid has been unusable since we had the burglary in the camper van 2021, when someone stole the keys to the lid.
Since then we have been filling water by pulling a hose inside the camper, lifting all the cushions, unscrewing the water tank lid and filling it that way... Yes, messy! So it was great to finally be able to fill the campervan with water like normal people!
Another ridiculous problem we have had is that the "lock" on the fridge stopped working. If you don't usually travel on a rolling vehicle, you may not think about it, but the lock is... necessary so as not to have all the contents of the fridge land on the floor at the first possible curve ...
Did they have a new fridge lock at CaravanLandia in Kokkola? Yes, they did! We no longer have to tape the fridge every time we roll, and it feels luxurious. Happy Friday!
Best this week
The best part of this week is that we got to experience even more amazing places along the Finnish coast. We thought we would make it so much quicker, but there is so much to see and experience ...
Your turn ... what can you highlight as the best part of your week?
The week ahead
We will continue travelling in Finland for a while longer, and after that we will cross borders somewhere around Tornio - Haparanda. Here at FREEDOMtravel you can expect more reports about Ostrobothnia (including Vaasa and Oravais), but also about Åland. We haven't told you about all the great places in Åland yet. Don't miss this!

Pigs are super tasty. My former mother-in-law made something similar called aniseed boys, the same dough but without jam and with a little aniseed in it. Great.

So nice to get such "small" things fixed. Small, but which means so much! Something you can be happy about for several days 🙂
Nope, never heard of Finnish pigs. Always fun to try something domestic.
Best of the week... it has to be that our work on the paving stone is progressing. And it will be great! It will be soooo nice when it's done so we don't have to haul in all the gravel.
Have a nice weekend!

It's easy to put off things you should have done.
Now have a wonderful Friday!

Yes indeed! We have also had trouble finding the stuff. We've found water lids before, but then it's been the wrong kind ...

Fresh pigs are good! Childhood memories! They are actually available at a café here in Umeå, Nybro konditori! The man who started it came from Närpes. Great to follow your adventures in my home region!

Helena says:
Ah fun that there are pigs in Umeå too! 🙂 And fun that you appreciate following our journey, there will be more!!!

Freshly baked Finnish pigs are so good. Preferably so freshly fried that they are lukewarm. Very different, I think, from the aforementioned aniseed boys (Pitepojkar they are called in Piteå) as they are fluffier and contain jam.
Did you pass by Kalajoki, the Ostrobothnian Riviera? Long stretches of sandy beaches and absolutely gorgeous.
28 July 2023 - 9:45
Helena says:
Yes, we spent two nights at the campsite in Kalajoki! Fantastically nice! 🙂

With our lack of experience in Finland, we have never heard of Finnish pigs.
How nice to have annoying "little things" fixed. On our last motorhome we "fixed" the fridge lock for a couple of years using a rubber band.
The best part of the week for us is that a garage that opened after the holidays was able to turn off our fuel injection warning light, give us reassurance about the cause and we were able to go for a test drive without any more alarms!
Now we just want a few days without rain.....
28 July 2023 - 10:50
Helena says:
Yes, that type of "repairs" we also usually run with a year or so 😂. And sooo nice that you got help with the warning light, that's not fun! Hope you get some sun this weekend!!!

Certainly travelling here in Finland is an experience. We have done it by car and stayed in hotels and B&Bs along the way and sometimes in comfortable camping cabins. We had plenty of time and let everything take the time we wanted. Hurrying is pointless.
Some of us have tasted these "Finnish pigs" Also available in Åland where we are from time to time.
Perfect that you were able to organise some practical things for the motorhome and that you got what you wanted. Sometimes smaller resorts are a good choice for this.
Best of the week? Our trip to Åland and Mariehamn to attend businessman Anders Wiklöf's birthday concert on 25 July with fantastic artists; Sarah Brightman. Niklas Strömstedt, Sanne Salomonsen, Kärräjä (the Finnish guy who came second in the Eurovision Song Contest) Johnny Logan, Sissel Kyrkebö, Linda Lampenius and many more. 6500 tickets had been released and they were free.
Further meetings with friends have added to the week in various ways.
Wishing you a great weekend.

Is there anything like Caravan Landia in Sweden? Have never seen it actually. The place can be compared to Mekonomen, but that chain only fixes passenger cars, I think. Great that you could fix everything you needed to fix in the neighbouring country.

There seems to be lots of nice places along the coast in Finland. I myself have "in modern times" mostly been in the northern parts of Finland, north of the Arctic Circle, sort of. Are you going up there?

Helena from Finland says:
Glad you got the Freedom fixed. At least motorhome life is much easier with a working fridge door😂. Have a nice trip.
