Van Gogh Alive
Van Gogh Alive is a digital art experience that has travelled around the world. The exhibition has been shown to over 8.5 million people in over 85 countries, in cities such as Beijing, Mexico City, Munich, London, Sydney and Madrid.
We saw the exhibition in Skellefteåand must say that this experience is something out of the ordinary. Whether you know van Gogh well, or whether you have no relation to his art, you can hardly leave here untouched.
Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. He was a post-impressionist painter and is one of the most famous Western artists. Unfortunately, he didn't get to enjoy the fame, or the money that his art later earned him. During his lifetime, he sold only one painting, The Red Vineyard. After many years of poverty and mental illness, he committed suicide at the age of 37.
I (Helena) read a biography of Van Gogh when I was young, He who loved lifeand so I had some memories of what the artist's life was like, moving to France, painting, lack of money, meetings with prostitutes, a lot of alcohol, psychotic periods of delusion and constant financial help from his younger brother Theo.
Maybe you've heard about how Van Gogh once cut off his own ear and possibly, at least according to some stories, gave it to a prostitute? If not, you have probably seen many of his amazing paintings, preferably with French landscapes, cypresses, olive trees and sunflowers.
Van Gogh Alive in Skellefteå
We saw Van Gogh Alive in Skellefteå, where the exhibition is on display in Eddahallen from 2 June - 27 August 2023. After that, the exhibition will move to Malmö, where you can see it at Malmömässan from 30 September 2023 to 14 January 2024. You can find out where it moves to after that at exhibition website.
Visiting Van Gogh Alive - good to know
If you plan to visit Van Gogh Alive, it is best to buy a ticket online before your visit. In order to ensure that there are always enough people on the premises, tickets are purchased for a specific day and time. Visiting the exhibition then takes about 60-90 minutes.
The first part of Van Gogh Alive is a more classic exhibition, where you can learn more about the artist's life and work. This is an excellent introduction to the upcoming experience.
Visiting Van Gogh Alive - an experience
Visiting Van Gogh Alive is an experience. You enter a large room, where you can stand or sit, on chairs or on the floor. All around is a digital show, with large moving images.
The show features around 3000 images, and sometimes shorter texts, accompanied by atmospheric music.
Sometimes the artworks come to life, like a train chugging through the hall, or clouds moving in the sky.
Finally, you enter a room filled with sunflowers, which Vincent van Gogh loved.
