Did you know that I always go to Madrid several times a year no matter where I am? Spain is a country full of history, culture and family connections. I was born and raised in Spain throughout my teenage years until I moved to the UK. It took a few years after that to move to Sweden to start a family.
My trip to Madrid, the capital of Spain, is always special because it's where my father is from, where I lived for a few years, and where we have a unique connection to a world-famous tailor shop. For me, it's about exploring my roots, reuniting with my loved ones, and discovering a whole new world for many of you - the world of toreador suits.
Family connections to Madrid
Visiting Madrid is like coming home. Here, in the centre of the bustling capital, my father has his origins, a real cat as it is called, those who are from Madrid for many generations. He is no longer alive my dear father and I remember he was very proud of his Madrid basketball, and his passion for culture has always inspired me. Every visit to Madrid is an opportunity to reunite with family and experience genuine Spanish hospitality.
My uncle Antonio and the sastreria, tailoring de Matadores Casa Fermin
During my stays in Madrid, there is always an obligatory excursion on the schedule: meeting my uncle Antonio. Antonio Lopez, my uncle, is not only a dear family member but also a master of the sastreria, the Casa Fermin tailoring business - the art of creating toreador suits.
This is not an ordinary tailor's shop, but like a Matador museum known throughout the world. Casa Fermin is his true masterpiece, a sastreria known worldwide. Fermin was the founder and my uncle too. Famous Hollywood stars and international as well as Spanish stars, matadors and many others have all stepped through its doors to create costumes that are as much works of art as they are pieces of clothing.
Costumes as works of art
The costumes created at Casa Fermin are extraordinary. They are handmade, with details executed with true craftsmanship. My uncle is famous in France or Mexico where bullfighting is still popular and he is called the Yves Saint Laurent of matadors. The costumes are often made with gold thread and are undoubtedly works of art.
Following the process from start to finish is a lesson in craftsmanship and dedication. Every stitch and every seam is done with care and precision, and the result is something that not only toreadors around the world wear with pride, but also something that has caught the attention of the fashion world.
Visit to Casa Fermin
My uncle's shop is just a few steps from Puerta del Sol, the heart of Madrid. Visiting Casa Fermin is like stepping into another era. You feel as if you are surrounded by history and passion. Always happy to welcome visitors, they take the time to explain the whole process and showcase some of their most impressive work. Trying on a Toreador suit is a memory for life.
A beloved family tradition
My visits to Casa Fermin are always special. We often end the day with a dinner at one of Madrid's best restaurants, where my uncle is a famous guest. These dinners are a time to share stories, laugh and appreciate the special family connection we have with Casa Fermin.
My trip to Madrid is always something I look forward to with excitement. Exploring my roots, reuniting with my loved ones and experiencing the exciting world of toreador costumes at Casa Fermin makes it a trip that never gets boring. I am proud of my family's connection to this tailoring masterpiece, and I look forward to my next visit with even more appreciation.
Madrid - the heart of Spain and my second home
Madrid is for me the real Spanish life. It is a city pulsating with energy and passion, and every visit is like a loving embrace of my roots. As I walk along its streets and squares, I am embraced by the vibrant atmosphere that is unique to this city. Madrid is not only the capital of Spain; it is a symbol of Spanish culture, with its rich history and a future that always looks bright.
Spring in Madrid is particularly magical. As the winter chill lifts and the flowers begin to bloom, the city becomes even more beautiful. The parks and gardens are filled with colour, and the mild weather makes it perfect for exploring all that Madrid has to offer. Spring is a time for café visits on sunny terraces and walks along the famous boulevards. It's a time when the city comes alive in a way that is unrivalled.
However, I must admit that summer in Madrid is far too hot for my taste. When the sun is at its peak and temperatures soar, the city can become a cauldron of heat. While summer can be a challenge for those who can't tolerate extreme temperatures, there are still many ways to enjoy the city, perhaps by seeking shade in its beautiful parks or enjoying a cooling paella at one of the city's outdoor restaurants.
But for me, Madrid is not just a city; it is also a place to experience the beauty and strength of the horse. The Spanish are deeply rooted in the world of the horse, and this has always been part of my love for the city. Watching the elegant Spanish horses perform their majestic movements in a classic Spanish riding school is like watching art in motion. It is a reminder of the passion and craftsmanship that permeates everything Spain stands for.
To summarise, my feelings for Madrid and Spain are warm and deep. For me, Madrid is a city where I feel at home, with so much culture, where I can explore my roots and where I am surrounded by culture, history and love. Whether walking through its streets or watching the magnificent Spanish horses perform, every moment is a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity that Spain has to offer.
It is a love that never fades and will always be part of my heart. Madrid, you are my second home, and I am forever grateful for the love and warmth you give me every time I visit you.
Viva Madrid y viva España.
Bienvenidos a Madrid!
¡Viva Madrid y viva Casa Fermin Lopez!

What an interesting story. I can see how you are proud of that background and connection! Hope the craft can be passed on.
I've never been to Madrid myself, but it's on my wish list 🙂.
