At the beginning of this story, I want to take you on an amazing adventure through Europe, where Åse Rees, a happy and curious traveller, chose to accept an unexpected job offer from the Swedish travel agency Boka Nerja, based in the south of Spain. What makes her trip so special is not only the exciting job, but the fact that Åse and her daughter chose to explore the continent in a free and delightful way - in a motorhome named RAJ.
For all you motorhome enthusiasts out there, this is the story of Åse's unforgettable journey of over 350 kilometres, from Sweden to sunny Nerja in southern Spain. It's a story about more than just distances and destinations; it's a celebration of the wonderful sense of freedom and joy that comes with travelling in a motorhome.
The motorhome as a companion
Åse's adventure started in August when she and her daughter packed the campervan with everything they thought they would need for a full season in Spain. From Malmö they took the boat to Germany and continued through Germany, France and finally Spain. Seven nights on the road, including two nights with friends in La Zenia, became unforgettable moments.
The motorhome, affectionately known as the RAJ, proved to be the perfect companion. With a kitchen, oven, hob and even a small bathroom with a shower cubicle, they had everything they needed for a comfortable adventure. Despite challenges such as limited speed and mountain climbs, the RAJ was their trusted companion throughout the journey.
Åse and her daughter chose back roads on purpose to experience more of the journey. Google Maps time estimates proved unreliable for a campervan that did not reach 120 km/h. But these back roads led them to picturesque places, from town squares to beautiful hills and beachfront streets.
Arrival in Nerja
After a week in the campervan, they finally reached Nerja. They initially stayed in the campervan before gaining access to the apartment they now rent. The exploration continued with trips to Gibraltar, Ronda etc. She received a visit from her mother and her best friend.
Friendship in Nerja
What makes this trip even more memorable is that Åse and I actually became friends when I visited Nerja and her travel agency. Book Nerja last time. It's amazing how travel can bring people together, and our shared passion for travel and adventure has further deepened our friendship.
Colder than expected, but still good
Åse and her daughter made the most of the trip, including bringing their SUP (Stand Up Paddleboards) and a sewing machine for distance learning. Despite the lack of winter clothes because they didn't know it could snow this far south in Europe (considering that near Nerja in the Sierra Nevada you can also ski and sometimes get unexpectedly cold weather), they don't regret a second of the adventure. It turned out well anyway!
Åse finishes with a smile to me and says: "We are so happy that we made this trip. "We don't regret it for a second, although we obviously miss our second home on Koh Lanta in Thailand and our friends there."
This is a journey that is not just a geographical move, but a story of courage, freedom and unforgettable moments. For all motorhome lovers out there, this is an adventure to be inspired by and maybe even plan the next adventure of your own on four wheels. Welcome to travelling more freely by motorhome!
