Art in Stockholm
Over the past few years, we've taken the opportunity to see a lot of art in Stockholm, visiting everything from museums to the Stockholm metro. There is always something new to see, partly because there are so many museums, but also because there are always new exhibitions. Here are twelve places to visit for exciting art experiences.
1. Liljevalchs Art Centre
Liljevalchs konsthall displays modern and contemporary art on Djurgården. Among the events organised here are Spring Salon - a juried exhibition open to anyone over the age of 18 to apply. The art centre is also notorious for its recent extension, the architecture of which provoked strong emotions.
2. National Museum
Nationalmuseum, located on Blasieholmen in Stockholm, is the largest art and design museum in Sweden. It houses the Nordic region's most comprehensive collection of more than 700 000 works of art and artefacts. The largest exhibition is called 'The Timeline' and covers art and design from the 16th century to the present day.
3. Sven-Harry Art Museum
The Sven-Harry Art Museum is located in a gold-coloured building with a large roof terrace in the middle of Vasaparken. Here, Sven-Harry Karlsson displays an impressive art collection, as well as many different temporary exhibitions of art and design.
4. Art galleries in the South
If you like looking at art, but also want the opportunity to buy art, you can discover all of Stockholm's art galleries. On Södermalm, these are densely packed. For example, stroll along Hornsgatan where you will find galleries such as South Gallery and the glass and ceramics group Blowing and kneading.
5. Hallwylska Palace
The Hallwyl Palace, or Hallwyl Museum, is a well-preserved home on Hamngatan, where the wealthy Hallwyl family once lived. Here you can see the beautiful floors and rooms, but also Vilhelmina von Halwyl's large collection of artefacts.
6. Fotografiska Stockholm
The Fotografiska Museum is a very popular museum showcasing photographic art. Here you can constantly see new current exhibitions with photographers and image makers from all over the world.
7. Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde
Located on Djurgården, Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde was originally the home of Prince Eugen. Today this is a popular art museum where you can see the prince's paintings, but also various temporary exhibitions and a beautiful park filled with sculptures.
8. The Royal Palace with the Gustav III Museum of Antiquities
When you visit the Royal Palace in Stockholm, you can see the stunning state rooms, decorated with columns, paintings, sculptures and elaborate stucco work. The palace also houses several museums, including the Gustav III Antique Museum, filled with 18th century sculptures.
9. Stockholm metro
The Stockholm metro is the longest art exhibition in the world, at 110 kilometres long, and all you have to do to see it is buy a ticket. A total of 94 of the 100 stations are decorated by around 250 different artists.
10. Moderna Museum
The Moderna Museet in Stockholm, located on Skeppsholmen, is a museum of modern and contemporary art. It displays art in the form of painting, sculpture, photography and art film from 1900 onwards.
11. Thielska Gallery
The Thielska Gallery is beautifully located on the southern part of Djurgården in Stockholm, and if you want to, you can get there or from here by boat. The museum displays the Thiel couple's large art collection, as well as various temporary exhibitions.
12th Artipelag
Artipelag is a modern cultural centre in Värmdö, which offers various art installations while enjoying nature, beautiful views and restaurants. This is a popular destination and has been on our wish list for a long time, but we have yet to set foot there.
