The Boma - Dinner & Drum Show
Many tourists visiting Victoria Falls choose to spend an evening at "The Boma - Dinner & Drum Show", and so did we. By the way, this restaurant belongs to the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, where we stayed, and is a short walk from here.
If it is a touristy experience at The Boma? Yes, definitely! But it's also a nice and fun evening on offer!
When you arrive, you are given a colourful scarf, which you are helped to tie around your body, and then shown to a table in the large, airy restaurant.
Food at The Boma
Shortly after we sat down, small snacks were served at the table, in the form of nuts, beans and pieces of crocodile meat. We tasted the crocodile meat, which was ok, although not a favourite.
You then go and get your own food from a large buffet. Here you will find lots of food in the form of grilled meat, stews, rice, salads, vegetables and vegetable dishes.
We tried both skewers and stew with the greater kudu (Africa's second largest antelope). Not bad!
A whole pig was also grilled on site.
There were also desserts in the form of cakes and pastries.
Try Mopane larvae at The Boma
Everyone who is brave is invited to taste and eat the mopane caterpillar, the larva of the moth. gonimbrasia belina. This caterpillar is an important and popular source of protein for many locals in Zimbabwe, and can be eaten either cooked as it is, or for example in a stew.
If you eat a mopane caterpillar at The Boma, you get a diploma, and Alexandra was the first to try it.
Robin didn't want to be worse, and he also went for a caterpillar tasting.
There were diplomas for both Robin and Alexandra!
What about us? Yes, Peter tested. Quite ok to try according to him, but after one caterpillar he was satisfied, so to speak ... What about me (Helena)? Well, I felt "not really hungry" for caterpillar at that time ... I was happy to act as a photographer!
Activities: Face painting, braiding and fortune telling
In addition to eating caterpillars, a lot of other activities are organised during an evening at The Boma. Some went around offering face painting or hair braiding. Both Robin and Alexandra got really nice decorations on their faces!
One man also told me that you could come to him if you wanted to tell your fortune. We never did this, but we met some German guys who tried it. They learnt that one of them would become very rich in the future...!
Dance and drum show
What above all happening at The Boma is a show with dance and drums. Musicians and dancers entertain in the middle of the restaurant, and it's really colourful, lively and rhythmic!
After a while, each guest got a drum, and we also got to "help" in the drum show. Fun and engaging!
In summary, it was a very nice and fun evening at The Boma - dinner and drum show in Zimbabwe. An experience!

So lovely to come back to The Boma, where we had dinner on our last night of the Botswana, Zimbabwe/Zambia trip. We recognise most of it; the curtains, the face painting, all the exotic items on the buffet (yes, we ate caterpillars. At least they were not alive like the ones I was offered in Ecuador) and especially the drum show, what a rhythm they have. Of course it was touristy, but still a great experience.

Loved the food, but even my limit had gone at caterpillars/worms. Robin's face says it all - hahaha:-)
The face paintings were really cool. And Alexandra should have gone for the hair braids:-)
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the entertainment either. Of course it is touristy, but at the same time very exotic for four people from Sweden.

Just like that, it's touristy, but fun and enjoyable! And even if it is under touristy conditions, you get to learn a lot about the culture. like the caterpillars for example 😉.
